Record-breaking low temperatures in the United States have led to power cuts and schools have closed in some states. But for some countries, this level of cold is part of normal life. Finland is one of the coldest countries in the world - with a record low below -50°C (-58°F). So what can the US learn from Finland about dealing with cold weather? The BBC's Rajini Vaidyanathan went to the Finnish Embassy in Washington, DC, to find out the secret to what they call "snow-how".

it´s sometimes both funny and annoying how in other countries people do actually believe ALL of Finland is as cold during winter as let´s say Lappi,Sodankylä or Rovaniemi. And in general the regular cold we get in finland ain´t that far from canada or some parts of the us so often I don´t get it what´s so "super cold" in our winter, especially when I watch some of the tv shows of theirs and the winters in them? I honestly don´t? O.o´

It´s funny how foreigners always tend to claim and think that Finland is all about the cold weather. Let me tell you something: It´s not. The funniest thing is that the winters are actually colder in the many most parts of Canada and northern USA than in Southern Finland. It´s kinda annoying since these under -30°C temperatures are always and only measured in the rural areas of northern Finland where only a few people actually live and still the whole country is marked as super cold. Finland is a large country when it comes to land-area so it always annoys me when the whole country gets the reputation of being cold.

I agree it is frustrating when Finland is always known for its coldness even though it is not really that cold ever at least in southern Finland where most of the finns live

-30 is not only in the North. It starts roughly from the middle of the country.

Almost entire finland is much colder than populated areas in us or canada. I live in midpart and we have snow on the ground 6months nonstop. Coldest weather i remember was -48 and i had to work outside. Its true that we dont have as heavy snowstorms as east coast of north america because u get that moisture from big lakes but i think our 'snowhow' comes from our ancestors who lived here when us and canada people are from milder climates and have been in that area 2-300 years at best. If i would go to sahara i would ask from bedouin how to cope there not any settlers.

so Finland's tip on US cold is to keep the Airport open , and build a sauna in every other US house? On a scale of 1 to 10, how lame is this report? What does the title say, and what does the content have?

Tejas Trivedi I agree, when the tempature gets between -35°c and -40°c in northern Finland; in southern parts it's between -20 °c and -25°c and in central Finland between -25°c and -35°c, so there is big difference with location in Finland too but anyways everything works normally and nothing public is cancelled because the weather so people can do their daily acts normally everyday :)
