  • We implement the dynamic overset grid capability into OpenFOAM and use the technique to perform the simulations of ship maneuvering with moving rudders and propellers.

Hi Zhirong! It is still an impressive work after 8 years! I wonder how all components are moving as one piece when they are not contacted with each other?

Hello, great video! Do you have some articles or documentation that could help me make a simulation for deciding trim optimization?

Impressive! Is there a plan to share your case/solver?

I have a nine-year-old nephew interested in engineering. My cousin has two younger boys with engineering/mechanical bents. I would like to set them up with a laptop running CAELinux. What is the best way for them to learn how to use FreeCAD, OpenFOAM, Paraview, etc?

Hi, Could you give us some information about how did you do to prepare this sim?

    hello, i'm reza from Indonesia,
    it's a good video!
do all the simulation use OpenFOAM?

hello reza, yes, all simulations were done in OpenFOAM, but with a few customized code.

if you don't mind, may i ask the customized code of that simulation?
because i have a thesis about ship maneuvers for my lecture

Hello Zhirong that's an impressing video! May I ask how long it took to solve this case, and what was the solver configuration. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Metin, sorry for late reply. In the below paper, there is detail information including the CPU time of the simulation. Hope it is useful.

Amazing simulation, how many cells are there? seemingly the rudder is moving along the water surface, is it just visual tricks or it is real moving?

Thanks, Lee. The cell numbers are depend on the cases. The largest number is about 8 million for DTMB 5415M. The rudders, propellers and ship hulls are actually moving and not visual tricks. This is one of the most important features of overset grid.
