In California an experienced surgical tech with deep expertise in the more challenging specialties, willing to leave LA and SF can make $40-60+ an hour in 2023. Travelers are making even more. If you're looking at that number and thinking I want that job, it's one of if not the hardest job in the hospital physically. You deal with vomit, shit, piss, blood, viruses and disease, burnt out surgeons who think they're God and poor hospital administration. Not to mention working long, long hours (on call you can be working 24 hours+ straight, nobody to help you, no breaks). Also not all techs are equal so if you don't get good at the job and can only scrub the basic cases, they'll pay you a lot less than someone say who can scrub orthopedics and hearts. To the newbies, LEARN YOUR ANATOMY

So, yesterday was my last day as a student surgical tech and let me tell you, she is not lying. You really don't realize how stressful this path is. We had to do 9 hour shifts 5 days a week during our clinical rotation. It was like a real job (though most employed techs do 12hr shifts) and it is not easy. You have to get good at it or it (healthcare in general) will eat you alive. Learn the procedures (because some doctors won't tell you what instrument they need next and some can't look up from the surgical site to see what you have in your hand or what you have on your mayo stand), learn anatomy, learn instruments (more than just the general instruments in the book), and know aseptic technique. Get good shoes, get compression socks, and stretch (because lead aprons, full case carts, and heavy instrument trays are going to really put work on your back). But if you get into this and you see that this job is not for you, don't be afraid to admit that and find something that works for you. It does not have to be SPD or being a nurse. It can be something else in the medical field. If I had to say I would prefer something that has to do with diagnostics or even dental.

Apply anyway. It's also super weird that you can't find anything entry level. Maybe try looking at a different state? I know my state has a shit ton of entry level ST jobs. That being said, I wouldn't expect you to be able to get a CSFA job with zero experience anywhere. There's a reason people say to wait a year to two years before getting the CSFA certification.

You're just looking in the wrong places. Worst case scenario if there's a hospital you really want to work at, apply to be an orderly and once the staff gets to know you and sees your work ethic, they'll hire you as a CST. Just make sure you understand that you make sure you tell them you are a surgical tech very loud and clear ahead of time and that you are looking to get the surgical tech position once it is available. Also you aren't first assist material for a long time. You will need 5+ years of scrubbing all practices to be a competent first assist as that is when your feet are wet enough. There's a lot to scrubbing that you need to make second nature first before they give you more responsiblity. What I also suggest is get good at orthopedics if you want to make big boy money

Girl, don't get me wrong. CNA'S are a huge help but it was a less stressful job then being a nurse (LPN). There were times I wished I could go back to being a CNA 😂 This girl I know is a surgical tech...definitely more stressful then being a CNA. You should shadow a surgical tech for a week and see for yourself. I remember a medical assistant saying that nurses and medical assistants are the same and she didn't understand why there was a pay difference. Her and the other medical assistants were aweful to me because they felt that the nurses were there to take over their jobs. I left that job eventually. Fast forward, she became a nursing student and was on my floor and I asked her "Do you still believe that nurses and medical assistance are the same?" She said "Heck no" 😂
