How to change the saildrive seacocks while still in the water
Have you ever talked yourself out of something because you think it would be too hard, or its not the 'normal' way, or because everyone tells you you can't? In this episode we take the road less trodden and find that we get to our destination in one piece, in a fraction of the time, expense and effort it would have cost us to do it the 'right' way.
Most people attempt this task on the hard, (out of the water) which calls for the expense of a haul out and all the faffing about that takes. We are very grateful we had the help of shipwright Byron who offered his time and expertise for free. He taught us how to get the job done quickly and showed us that completing this little bit of maintenance while still in the water is not as scary as you'd think.

    BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

Although the boys get wet, this episode features quite a dry subject so we thought we'd finish with a bang.
No one was hurt in the making of this episode, except maybe Rob. Did you spot the cut on his head which he received searching for that missing connection?

Oh dear is faffing not a word used in the US? It basically means to waste time messing about with a project. For example, "You've been faffing around with that for hours and it's still not finished."

@@danielwardin4688 goodness the metric shift came in the year of my (Rachel) birth 1971. Was the word faffing created less than 50 years ago, hard to believe. I don't remember a time when you couldn't faff. In fact if faffing were an Olympic sport we would definitely be on the podium 😄.

I will say this repeatedly, I love seeing videos of the repair work y'all have to do. The seacock repair reminded me of a time when my plumber changed the bottom heating element of my water heater without draining the 50-gallon tank (which would have taken an extra half-hour) - he merely put the nozzle of a wet-dray vacuum under the element, removed the element, the vacuum sucked up the escaping water until he screwed the new element into place. Not a single drop of water touched the floor! The lesson from my water heater repair and your seacock repair is that repairmen who really know what they are doing really do know what they are doing.

    Hey thanks nice
    Video
Always a pleasure to see your family . That sail blowing out at the foot scares me!! Crikey!!
You would be surprised with those sea cocks how little water comes in if you don’t block the inlets , we’ve been taking off the seacock in the water quickly using a 1/2 inch BSB brass plug from the hardware store to block that hole in the leg if you need to work on the the system, and the water coming in has been quite manageable although it’s scary at first . Those brass seacock are a true pain in the butt so much so that I bought a stainless steel valve and fittings and wouldn’t you know they won’t go on because they foul on the lip of the rubber boot around the leg!! So back to the brass, but soaking in hull cleaner for about ten minutes with an hour of cursing at them trying to unblock the thread by turning about a thousand times kinda fixes them. But now I’m jealous of your new ones and I’m going to do that . Can you remember how much they cost ?

Good to hear Te Pahu is still turning on the weather. You're more of a local than us now.
Lithium or lead acid comes down to personal choice. Our friends The Wholesome Sailors love their lithium batteries and they probably have a longer shelf life than lead acid.

Car batteries have a different chemistry Lithium Ion and much denser energy density so they can travel long distances. That’s why they are flammable. The ones used on boats are a different chemistry and lithium Iron Phosphate so not flammable. It is however a major job as all your charge controllers , alternators etc need modification so the cost will be probably triple the cost of drop in lead acid batteries.
“LiFePO4 (also known as Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries are a huge improvement over lead acid in weight, capacity and shelf life. The LiFePO4 batteries are the safest type of Lithium batteries as they will not overheat, and even if punctured they will not catch on fire.”

Rob, I think you're way behind the times as far as Lithum batteries are concerned. Not sure if you know how the airlines work but I spent 25 years in airline freight and was trained to the highest level as far as dangerous goods are concerned. IATA made the decision over 10 years ago to allow aircraft to carry them. Airlines have the strictest policy of all modes of transportation. We used to send up to 1,000 kgs of them on a 737. So I really think they've sorted out the problems now.

      @TheCruisingKiwis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah I remember trying to get our rowing boat sent on a cargo plane to UK and no way would they let flares be on board, so point taken. My big concern and that of some others is in a lightning strike which has happened to us. Maybe over cautious for sure but then we are happy with the output of what we have, though admittedly less weight would be nice!

@@TheCruisingKiwis I don't know if you check out "The Wynns" channel at all but they seem to have it down pat, but I don't think they've had a lightening strike. But then again they are making Cats powered by Lithium alone, with a backup Genny of course, and they dont have that big lightning rod stuck in the air.

The most interesting I've seen for Lith-Ion battery system was an Auto-Flood compartment for the batteries. As soon as they start (smoke I assume), the compartment floods with sea water. Fire out. Little risk to the rest of the boat. But the batteries are done and repairs are needed. I'll see if I can find the video and post a reply of such. It was a "new boat" review.

Rob im suprised you havent embraced lithium.of course theres alway a boat catching fire and was lithium the real reason for the fire? i would question that, of corse the ship owners are blaming the lithium and not shodding install that would void the insurance claim, think about it, theres just to many lithium batts out there NOT going wrong. its got to the stage for liveaboards that they cant afford not to go lithium if you work out the long term cost. just my 10 cents (inflation) worth

    • @TheCruisingKiwis

I hear you loud and clear Simon. We were sorely tempted to go down that route but I had several people caution me including the marine sparky who did the repairs post lightning strike. I would love the flexibility and weight saving lithium gives yet the tried and true is reliable and proven without the risks of a developing technology. Next time for sure!
