The one reason I stockpile large amounts of ammo is the possibility of the government making it un obtainable. I like the idea of having a enough ammo to last me for the rest of my life if I can no longer get more ammo. It is my desire to pass my weapons and ammo along to my children and or grandchildren . I believe the scenario becomes more and more likely for the future generations.

definitely cannot see this being true. Rights are rights. The difference between rights and authority and then supply is you have a right to manufacture your own ammo as long as you have the funds, supplies and other parts/machinery. stock up on such for emergencies but don't expect to load the stuff unless you have either covered such bases to make such things happen as if you could load them all and use all your ammo. in a big SHTF situation, you'll pack light. your stockpile would be if you ever survived to make it back.

The Immortal That is a nice goal. Unfortunately after watching so many prepper videos, most seem to store more handgun ammo than they do rifle ammo. Which seems odd to me, I would think you would always use carbine or full length rifle in SHTF for its accuracy and power???

    • @theimmortal4718
      @theimmortal4718 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Well, I can understand that if it's mostly range ammo. I only store about 200 rds of defensive ammo per gun. The rest is just FMJ. A lot of ball is useful for practice. You want to practice regularly with your handgun since it's the gun you're most likely going to use

***** Thank for your opinion, but I do not think Argentina can compare to the US. Secondly, I use to subscribe to Fernando's YT channel but found most of his stuff inaccurate, in my opinion, perhaps in Argentina where the population density doesn't even come close to the US it would work. Just for me, again ME, I found his channel and thus probably his book, inaccurate in many ways. Also, if you still have a job, most people wouldn't consider that true SHTF, it would be an economic collapse or depression but certainly not a true SHTF. Again, my OPINION.

The cause is pretty irrelevant. I'm talking about the conditions, and the conditions in Argentina don't even compare to Iraq. People go to work in most countries, though there is a lot of poverty and unemployment in both. What the Iraqis experience is not a high crime rate, but genocide. The gangs in Argentina are a crime problem, not mass graves. It pretty much is real life Mad Max, except Lord Humongous flies a black flag with the Abu Sayef on it.

Thanks man. I agree with you.
Definitely viable to have magazines loaded up and prepared vs cases of ammo stored away.

  • @pwrserge83
    @pwrserge83 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

A modern infantry load is 330 rounds in 11 magazines. (10 on your gear and another 1 in the weapon.) That being said, most grunts always like to carry extras. I generally had an extra ten magazines stashed on my person between extra pouches and my assault pack.
1000 rounds is not really sufficient unless you are a very good shot and don't plan on using suppressive fire. I've burned through the majority of my personal load in a single firefight. Two of those and you're completely out of ammo. If you're stocking 5.56x45 several thousand rounds is not a difficult thing to store. You can easily stash a thousand rounds in a single 50 caliber ammo can.
I'd go with 3000 rounds per shooter for the primary with another 500 per shooter for sidearms. So if you plan to have you and your spouse defending your home. That's 6000 rounds of 5.56x45 and another 1000 of the handgun round of your choice. (I'd go with 9mm.) This gives you a safety margin where you can use ammunition for practice and hunting without any possibility of compromising your idea to defend yourself.
You are absolutely right about magazines. Going back to the formula above, you should have fifteen magazines for each primary weapon and five for each sidearm. That way, you can keep your "OH SHIT" gear ready and still use the remaining magazines for practice and as backups. One thing to remember is that magazines are inherently consumable items. They will get lost, damaged, and outright destroyed. This means that you are better off investing in a bulk pack of GI AR-15 magazines than in half as many fancy Lancer mags. The Lancers are nice, but the GIs will do the same job for half the price. (Which means you can have twice as many.)

I have more than what you recommend although I am not planning on a 'Mad Max' type scenario. My concern is that production may not restart for a very long time. Ammo will be needed to train kids/grandkids and for them to use if it comes to that. And even if nothing happens buying two and shooting one stockpiles ammo that CAN be bought now for grandkids who may or may not be able to buy it then. That is another issue though. Good video.

I both agree and disagree, it really doesn't matter how much of anything you have, without a way to resupply you will run out of whatever it is. I took my preps to a whole new level because after I realized restocking was the key to any given situation. I began to research food production and preservation, then I moved on to energy production and finally onto ammo. So while I have amended my plans over time I feel I have made better choices that will provide a much greater chance of survival. The best part of everything for myself is that I use my preps every day and continually restock. So there is no magic number for how much of anything that you should have. What you store depends on quite a few things, do you plan to "bug out" ? if so your stores should either be at or near your bug out location or packed up to be easily loaded if or when the time comes. How many people are you supporting? a single persons supplies will last much longer than a family or group of people. Do you live in a urban or rural area? major cities will be overrun by everyone, because everyone that hasn't stored food, water and ammo will be out there looking for anything they can get their hands on. Whereas rural areas generally are less populated and the people that live in these areas are used to being without power longer than people in the cities. They are also more resourceful in producing their own food and usually have a well rather than city water. I have seen many videos that say you should have X number of rounds or this much food and water. The fact is without being able to restock you will run out of what ever you have. I urge everyone to "grow your own" learn about proper food preservation methods and learn the skills that will keep you alive.

And IMO 500 rnds for handgun (100 jhp and 400 ball) 500 shot gun shells ( assorted) and 1000 rnds of 556 for the AR with 7 30 rnd mags( combat load when i was in the army. I also think its a good idea to have ammo to RELOAD your mags with because you may be in more than 1 firefight over the 3 month to a year period for stability to return after a SHTF senario.

It never ceases to amaze me. Just how much effort people put into weapons and ammo. As if they can carry 500lbs of gear with them. Never mind that only 10% is actual combat in any war. The other 90% is spent putting people back to gather. If they survive. Then feeding them. Housing them and educating them. Not to mention watch your back from people of low moral character that would sell you out in a heart beat.
I got one hunting rifle. One pistol and two box's of ammo for each one. No fancy gadgets that add 7 lbs to them and I know how to use them. One backpack and trauma kit. The dog carries her own su As I figure the stupid ones will bring their stuff to me.

I agree with your point about mags vs ammo, this is why I have a few dozen mags loaded for my main rifle. I also keep all my extra ammo on stripper clips so I can use 3 clips to load a mag much faster then doing it by hand or with a loader that loads one round at a time.

Good advice on bulking up on the .22LR. The S&W M&P 15-22 rifle looks just like an AR so you can use some deception to make it look like you have a centerfire rifel.. If someone is spraying .22LR at me I'm gonna dig a whole and get low just as if it was a .223. A .22 Lr wound in shtf scenario is going to be problematic so its still very intimidating. Granted its hitting power isnt as hard but where possible I would always plan shooting in quick three round bursts to try to get a couple of hits at a time.

Myself and a friend try to think outside of the box on defense issues. Ammo is good, but you need to consider other options. 300ft Mortars (fireworks) would be a great weapon. 100ft diameter explosion, 300ft high capable. Bright flash for (my) visual bearing/locating, also could damage NVG people. Low flying aircraft. shoot one into a mob of people, it becomes all sorts of chaos. Might be expensive, but every new years and July 4th, buy more and use last years stock to keep stock fresh. Fireworks in general can be of great value. Caltrops (for footmen, and vehicles), go to a country club yard sale. Pick up a 5gal bucket of golfballs. $5-10. Get some nails. Thin wirey ones, and thick heavy ones. Drill small holes into balls, hammer nails in making a spike ball. Paint with relevant camo (leaf, dirt road, pavement, grass) and store. Loads of ideas if you take the time to think of ways to stop people from accessing you. One mortar could save you hundreds of rounds of ammo.

The standard US infantry load is 210 rounds (seven 30-round magazines), but soldiers have been known to carry two or even three times as many if they expect to get involved in a prolonged fight where resupply would be difficult or not very timely. They don't usually go through all 210 rounds--or for that matter even one full magazine--although there have been prolonged firefights in which individuals have fired over 1000 rounds (through their rifles, not machine guns), in which case they were undoubtedly resupplied, perhaps several times. While such cases are rare, they do happen, and for preppers in a SHTF situation, we're potentially talking about months or even years without resupply--the situations are most likely rather different, but with time as an additional factor, the number of rounds becomes more comparable.
Personally, I think it's unlikely that I would have to fire many--if indeed any--rounds even in a serious SHTF scenario, but this is something I would rather have and not need than need and not have. As with even soldiers, there is no perfect answer for how many are needed, but since I maintain a small stockpile--a few thousand rounds that I buy while they're cheap--anyway, I think that should cover even the least likely scenarios, let alone the most likely. The real question is how much I'd be willing to carry should I need to bug out, but because I like to be prepared I'd try to carry as many as I can. Honestly, I don't think that a serious SHTF scenario is likely to happen in my lifetime, but being prepared is what I'm all about, so I won't ignore that possibility or the possibility that I might just need a few thousand rounds.

  • @kfgrip

While ammo count and magazine totals are important the one thing I think always gets lost in the mix is this.IF I get into a firefight post SHTF and I fire even half the rounds I am carrying I am probably going to die anyway,so putting away 20K rounds is ridiculous. So say I have a full double battle load out of 12-14 loaded magazines,If this is the standard i carry every time I go out then I need to have double that amount in magazines because eventually the mags I use will become unusable over time with wear .I am sure I can repair them to a point but eventually they will need to be replaced.Bottom line is this YOU have as much as YOU feel you NEED and don't let anyone else dictate to you what is best for YOU.

When I attended gunsmithing school, one important point brought out to consider in ammunition storage is barrel life...for most rifles other than heavy calibers like 300 win mag, 338 Lapua and 50 BMG, 3000 rounds out of the barrel begins to affect accuracy... my guess is that 10,000 rounds would be an upper limit... (the aforementioned heavier calibers have generally a thousand round upper limit)... for handguns, Glock used to advertise that theirs with the barrel tennifer finish would be good for 200,000 +- virtually a lifetime supply...ALSO CRITICAL TO CONSIDER, while you maintain your skill level through regular practice [and keep a rough record for proper maintenance of barrel life etc], is spare parts that wear out- like springs for example, and a repair manual for each of your firearms, with a limited number of the tools necessary to maintain them...FINALLY, DON'T FORGET patches and cleaning/lubricating oil to keep your firearms ALWAYS READY...

well, if you had several people to cover each other then fine having only a few mags loaded, but alone or with minimal people better to have plenty. I agree about not being a major onset, but, having it and not needing it sounds better than the other way around.

1-2000 rounds per caliber is a good number. Remember you may have to pass a rifle to family/friends whenever they wake up out of Candyland. Also, we live in Florida where animals are dangerous also(Gators, Pythons, bears, panthers, and lazy people who have spent their earnings on fruitless investments). More importantly are the mags to boot. Great Bids Brother. #CarryOn

Don't forget that ammo is good currency in a SHTF scenario; when paper money is now toilet paper, and survivors have to rely on barter, lots of extra ammo is nice to have for that purpose. Another youtuber I just saw suggested 3000 rounds for your primary, 3k for your sidearm, 500-1k for your long range hunting rifle, 1k-2k shotgun, and 2k-3k .22lr, and everything else is gravy, and good currency if you run low on rations, medicine, or whatever. I heard of some people that like having 100k rounds of varying caliber or more. This might be fine if you plan on never relocating, and gives you tons to barter with, but it's useless if you gotta bug out(which is very likely in a major population center).

2 reasons to stockpile as much ammo as you can. First, if you can't purchase it or get the materials needed to reload it, you will eventually run out of it. You will never know the amount of time you will be without it. Second reason, is that if SHTF, ammunition will become a form of currency. You will be able to trade it for essential items, and the harder it is to come across, the more valuable it becomes in trade.

When it comes to how much ammo you WILL ACTUALLY NEED in one of these SHTF situations I agree your thoughts on how much ammo to store. Where we part ways is when it comes to practice ammo. No weapon is worth a damn unless you are good enough with it to literally bet your life. This will require practice. I stock pile all the ammo I have room for so that during dry spells (remember 2008) I can still keep my skill set current. Outside of practice ammo, I have 2000 rounds for my rifle and enough magazines for 500 rounds. Outside of practice ammo for my pistol, I have about 3000 rounds and enough mags for 100 rounds. As far as practice ammo, I have enough to carry me through another 2008 type dry spell. I also reload so that keeps the cost controllable. The lions share of my prepping efforts however, are actually focused toward food, water, medical care, and if I am forced to evacuate my home some type of shelter.

I'd hate to have a 45 or 357 and a stash of ammo and have the gun break. Now I'm screwed. So I have redundancy in my weapons and ammo. As for amount, 1k rounds of each sounds good.

I have thought about how, if you were in that scenario where you are in your home, shooting it out with " bad guys"... Wouldn't it be easy for the " bad guys" to just throw a few fire bombs on your home, then you are S.O.L. in your home with all your ammunition burning to death. Or shot dead because you ran out of your burning shit and into the waiting horde. Good video, and sound logic.

    • @GhostInTheShell29
      @GhostInTheShell29 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Ispowz17751975 The use of fire depends on the motivation of the "bad guys' If they want your food, tools, ammo, guns ect.
They can't light your house on fire to get these things.
If your shooting it out with the bad guys because you killed some of their crew and they are out for revenge, yeah sure they can pretty easily light the house on fire.
I think in a STHF scenario its very important to be polite and not to piss anyone off. And if its unavoidable that your going to piss some one off, put a bullet in them first.
Because unless you got a large group and easily defendable area, one determined person can ruin your day.

Something that I think should be considered that I didn't hear mentioned is ammo for training. I would say 1000 is a minimum for protecting yourself, but ammo to keep your skills sharp should be increased based on how long the disaster is believed to last. I would suggest at least 1000 rounds per year for training. That is right around 80 rounds per month for training.

I agree with you on several points but mainly this...2k worth of 5.56 in boxes won't help much when someone screams "I need a fresh mag!"

  • @cseanz

The Army has a load out of approx. 200rds per infantryman because that is what they expect to use in a typical heavy firefight per man. I have been in a few of these, back in the day, and we were re-supplied by air within 15 min. Post SHTF, you may not be able to reload casings or obtain reloads for YEARS. Time is THE factor in your preps. 1000 rds of rifle ammo may not last a year, or even a month if things go hot. Get what you want, and store it. The guy means well in the video, but go with your instincts, not some one else advice.

Realistically, it would be what ever you can afford out of your budget.. Then prioritized based on your specific needs, number of people being armed, types of guns, number of guns and magazines, and storage solutions... Then emergency and survival scenarios on top of the minimal core amount..
Pick up some body armor if you can.. Level IIIA+ is affordable nowadays.. Although that leads to plate carriers and other load bearing gear needed..
Pick up first aid supplies.. Gauze, bandages, tourniquets, are all cheap and don't go bad, if you do your job.. And it isn't too expensive.. There's quik clot, but they have a shelf life, so some planning there is needed.. Although making a complete first aid kit can be expensive..
Survival gear that can double as camping gear.. Camping stoves, lanterns, sleeping bags, fire making materials, good quality lights and knives, water filters and other purification methods, extra blankets and pillows, and everything else can make a shitty situation a lot more comfortable..
Small luxury and personal items such as candy, books, portable dvd player, batteries, playing cards, camera, portable solar charger if you can afford, etc..
Simple things like extra socks and underwear/boxers... Shoes and boots.. Clothing in general..
And of course, some food, water, medicines needed..
Sorry if I'm rambling and going a bit off topic, but it all makes a complete package to HOPEFULLY preserve the quality of life during one of the emergency scenarios possible..

For a young man you are wise to say this, however if I'm listening correctly you are talking about individual squimishes.Provided you live through your encounter one must have ammo to replenish the spent mags., I don't think there is a magic number you can put on ammo. My old brain seems to work little different and I purchase ammo when ever I go to town to shop. Without putting a specific number out there I will say that my stores have been accumilating for many years. I have a multitude of calibers, from hunting rifles, revolvers, semi auto pistols, my trusty AR 15 and my favorite plinker is my 10-22 Ruger. Again you are correct the military normally carries a couple hundreds rounds as for me I have 10 30 round mags loaded and ready to go for my AR, 4 20 round mags and 10 10 round mags all neatly tucked away in my backpack ready to rock and roll. If I go through that I picked the wrong fight to be in.

If you're prepping for years, multiple events, ammo shortages, target practice then I'd get double the amount you typically use multiplied by the length of time you want to cover. But even as important as ammo, is having the proper amound of MAGAZINES to go with the ammunition. 10,000 rnds. doesn't help in a firefight if all u have is 2 or 3 mags. I would say 2000 to 3000 rounds per main battle rifle then the same amount again in a secondary location. Most soldiers carry extra mags and will have 300 to 330 rounds on them. One thing to remember is it is likely that it is going to be yourself and maybe one other person defending a position from an attacking force 3 to 6 times greater than yourself. You can easily be sending two to three times the suppressive ammo down range than an average soldier who operates as a larger team. Anything over 3000 rounds stored just for defense then you are starting to waste money since the chance of still being alive is getting very slim if the same quantity is being fired back. Money better spent will be on body armor and a good trauma kit and training. You can stockpile more than the 3000 rounds for training and trading purposes after other preps have been secured. If you really want peace of mind you could go to 5000 rounds at your primary location. I would also say to have at least enough magazines to have at least 1500 rounds already loaded up. In a perfect world you could have enough mags to load all your ammo up in. In combat mags are disposable expect to lose at lease half of them.

  • @BlackSabbathGuy

I agree with much of what you said. But coming from a larger family, it's essential to have more than a 1,000 rounds, I have 5 -10 possible people that would be in my party. 5 alone are immediate family. 1,000 rounds would yes give each person 200 rounds, but honestly in any situation that you are describing, it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Just food for thought for you to include in your next video, people with multiple persons in their party thus require more ammo. And 6 -8 magazines per person. Just my 2 cents brotha, good video!

I'm not as concerned about how many rounds I have as I am about being able to hit my target. That's why so much of my ammo is 12 gauge. I still have to aim but it rarely ever takes more than 1 or 2 rounds to drop someone with a 12 gauge.

You are not a sniper one day and years down the line without practice able to shoot the same way. My point is add to your stockpile equation practice ammo. Not just 22lr practice either. Staying in practice with 22lr is better than none but it's nowhere near the same as center fire practice. If you truly believe your life is in the balance why would you neglect that aspect of firearms ownership?
