Excellent points! Garage sales etc. Put an advertisement out looking for old games. Multiple colours of chip.. do it on the cheap and get fancy later, buying only what you actually use!
Shoot, It's taken me about four years on the fixed budget I have just to put together the nations I've built up, and I am still not done! I've still got FEC, Siam, Manchukuo, Argentina and a little bit of tweaking to my Canadian forces to do. It's been a long time coming but hey, to one who enjoys this game as I do, it's been worth it.
One thing to do is buy AA1941, and get your hands on ivory/white, red/orange, and some whites, blues, and yellow paint. Then, your British troops become Polish, your Russians are now Mongolians/Communist Chinese/Spanish Republicans, your Japanese are Siamese/Manchurian/Veterans/SNLF, and your USA and German troops can be painted a variety of colors and used as different neutrals. Also, buy HBG's Axis Minor Army set in yellow, ivory, light grey, and dark grey. These can respectively become Romanian/Finnish/Bulgarian/Hungarian troops. Then, buy HBG's Neutral set in ivory, white, light grey, and orange. The ivory troops can become Danish/Norwegian troops, the white can become Swiss/Swedish/Greek troops, the light grey can become Yugoslavian, and the dark can become other neutral countries. Also, as you point out, on HBG, there are cheap units! This can be purchased after a few month's saving. Also, GET GLOBAL 1940! IT IS WORTH IT! Your videos are great!
I've managed to save up about $60 over the past few weeks, and am interested in getting GW39 in a few months. What HBG units do you recommend I get to fill the gap? (I have AAG40, AA41, and HBG's Neutral set in orange, light grey, white, and ivory) I was thinking the Axis Minor set in ivory(Finland), yellow(Romania), dark grey(Hungary), and light grey(Bulgaria). In addition, I would get 15 of the Large Bunker pieces, a Early War Russian set, 2 Russian Guards marker sets, and 2 SS marker sets. Do you think that would work? I look forward to your next video!
Sounds like you're well on your way! If you feel like you have enough of the base units you need, then look at some of the specialist units, such as Heavy Tanks, Naval Fighters, Torpedo Dive Bombers, etc. You could use the tokens, but I like having the actual sculpts to show the different units. You will also want to get some "Coastal" tokens, as well as "Damaged". You can simply use pieces of paper (that's what we did!) until you can afford the actual tokens. You need a LOT of the Coastal tokens (15-20) if you set up all of the Neutrals, but usually just a set of 5 Damaged tokens. Also, if possible, try to get the sculpts for neato things like fortifications, coastal guns, convoys, radar, sub bases, and the really special tokens like the Kamikaze and/or Banzai, as well as the Partisan tokens. You can obviously use other things to denote them, but it's a nice experience for all the players to easily recognize what everything is instantly. But, that is the beauty of this game/hobby: you can cheat the pieces until you have the actual ones! I hope that helps!
I have many sets of Axis and Allies. If your like me you can do the following. Assuming you have A&A 1940 Global and maybe one other A&A game. 1) buy one or even two copies of the cheep 1941 version of A&A. 35$. It's a terrible version but comes with Different then standard tanks, fighters, bombers, subs, battleships. PAINT 2) paint bombers with stripes on the wings to make them strategic and heavy bombers. 3) (now you have two tank models) paint some of the more common models to make three types of tanks. 4) paint fights to make jet fighters 5) paint the circle bases the infantry stand on to make infantry classes. 6) paint subs for costal subs 7) use your different subs for supper subs 8) use different bombers as troop transports 9) use different destroyers as TBDs and actual destroyers 10) different battleships from the 1941 for Yamomoto class battleships 11)paint artillery for the US and Japan for advanced Artillery. (Other powers should have 2 types of artillery) 12) Risk pieces for Calvary. 13) paint up extras entirely green for China (red hats for commies) white for neutrals, and some color scheme for the Spanish civil war. 14) Use thick Paper for Convoy Duty 15) Paper facilities (sad but necessary to save $) You don't need a separate color ANZAC because it mores and attacks with the U.K. In GW 1936. So you can use your ANZAC for Different UK pieces. I use their tactical bomber as a troop transport. Ext... The Only thing I don't have is Advanced mechanized infantry because not enough come in A&A Global to pair a bunch into a different unit. Any Ideas on a good cheep Advanced Mech? I hope this was helpful. My point is basically, you can do a lot with Axis & Allies pieces plus paint.
All helpful ideas! I have used paint a lot with my minis, but as time marches on, I am willing to put money into the hobby so I can have the actual sculpts. As far as the Advanced Mech goes, paint does work well, too. If you don't want to paint them up because then they can only be Advanced, you can simply put them on a coin (dime is best - small and shiny!), or lay out a couple bucks for the round markers from HBG. Pretty cheap, but still denote the Advanced Mech. You would only need a few, and that's pretty inexpensive. Cheers!
The cheapest way to get in, is to find a group and just turn up at game sessions. There are plenty of people looking for stable, reliable playing partners who already have all the games/stuff.
No argument here! I used to have a very strong gaming community, but I moved and it's never been quite the same in my new location. I thought I'd make a video for those who might want to create their own collections. Thanks for watching!
Great video for newbies and veterans like us. I must of spent almost 2000 bucks since the 80s on anything remotely related to a@a, from Gamers Paradise expansion rules to 1914 central@allies including the Xeno games! Nowadays my knees won't allow me to work for money anymore,so have to improvise the customizations for the game as cheap as possible. Either us or somebody else should do a survey video on how we first got into this great game, that would be fun!!!!
Mine isn't too exciting...I was walking past a game store in the mall back in 1988 and used half a paycheque to buy A&A, Fortress America, and Shogun. I had no one to play with, so I just played solo. Sad, eh? ;)
The Hilltop Pillbox My experience is the reverse opposite, my brother back in 87 or 88 noticed in a neighbor's porch in their overflowed garbage pail a handful of pieces and rules to the game! After he showed me them I soon after ran to the nearest Toys R Us and bought it, ignoring the Shogun and Fortress America on the same shelf!! We loved the game so much we didn't want to play anything else even though those 2 other games were advertised on the side of the box! Back in the early new century when our passion for the game died down, I noticed in a yard sale the game of Shogun with a written message on it saying it was like a Japanese Risk, so I bought it for only 1.50 though it had some pieces missing including the swords! And when I noticed Fortress America on the side of the box, I went on eBay and won the auction for the game! Nowadays my brother has been a real pill and so I have to resort to playing solitaire games and get my fix watching you ax@allers on TH-cam, now that's pathetic!!!
Very informative and I must admit: I am shocked on how much space the game(s) take : ) I understand I need to take the Thinking Cap on and find a solution for the storage "problem". I have some similar boxes as you have but I am not satisfied with having them in plastic trays. Have a room ready soon and my tables will arrive from the US in about 2-3 months so it will be easier then to plan the set up. Keep making these good videos and I'll be watching.
I just printed my rules and factions for Global War 1936 the other day. It was like $80 total for printing everything in color and double-sided pages. I need to purchase a table large enough for a 4' by 8' map of 1936 GW.
Wow! $80? I guess you either went someplace other than Staples, or you don't live in Canada! Good for you! We don't have a table that big, so I just bought a sheet of chip board and we play on that. Works well, and very cheap!
I first went to a local place and printed all the factions, while doing that, the printer got mess up because the file for the core rules was too large for that printer to handle. So I went to the next town over and went to Staples. I got the Core rules on a heavier paper with the spiral rings and black backing. I think that was $5 extra. Also, this is US dollars. Yeah, I'm looking to do the same for the table situation. Maybe get pegboard or something like what you have.
Oh, and if your table is a lot smaller than the board you use, you could grab a couple of 2X4's (8 foot) and put them under the board so the board doesn't sag...
I had a friend make a custom folding board that fit the specs of the 4' by 8' map that I could lay on top of a smaller folding table. Then one day at walmart I found these nice fake "Wooden" folding tables and 3 of them are the perfect size for the board. They are $30 each but worth it.
Hi, I was wondering if you could showcase what comes with the Xeno Games, World at War? I’m thinking of Purchasing a Complete copy through EBay, and was just wondering if it’s worth it. If not then that’s okay. Btw, love the Videos and Content you put out! 👍
Interesting request! Actually, although I have the whole game, many of the minis are being used in my HBG games...I haven't played that one for probably ten or twelve years now. Sorry!
Great video for everyone! Really informative! I'm curious where can you find all these containers? Where can you buy all these? My containers are a little bit small that my naval units cannot always fit into them perfectly. Looking forward to change them. I know a lot of people made videos about this issue, like YG, and of course I watched that, but as a boarding school student and my parents are thousands of miles away from me, I just can't find so many containers. Eager to buy some new stuff!
Hey, I was a boarding student for grades 10-12, so I understand! Most of the containers you see are from the Dollar Store, although they all cost about $3 each. To be honest, they aren't as good as the more solid ones I bought from Home Depot, (the smaller ones and the German and Japanese ones), but they have more room. I wish you the best in finding what you need!
@@TheHilltopPillbox okay, good to know. And yeah, I really enjoy the content that you put out.
