  • In this video, I give some insight on how you could convert a delta config dry type transformer to a wye config. I also give some insight on de-rating the current and single phase use. Also how to wire 3 phase transformer for single phase. Disclaimer I made this video when I was only about 16 and was first exploring the world of polyphase transformers, lease take this video only for it's concept and not as real instruction.     It all is driven on your input voltage coming into primary. The transformer windings are configured for that input voltage rating. The secondary windings are configured for rated output voltages that are needed. If the phase/line voltages needed are self dividing, you have to connect in Delta. If the phase / line voltages needed are not self dividing, you must connect in star or wye. That good ole formula of the factor sq root 3 for amps and voltages for delta or wye

    Nice vid... there may be some innacuracies but as you pointed out you are still learning about this stuff. I wish there were more videos like this, I'm in my second year of electrical school and we are just getting to 3 p trans and it is nice to see an actual transformer, looking at line diagrams in the books doesn't do alot for me, I like to learn from the real thing...

    Hello logycom. I have the same transformer with primary 460v and secondary 460Y/266v. Now I want to use this transformer for 240 three phase input and around the 400v as output. How should I wire it. Just the same as you did? Please let me know asap as we are busy to wire it up now. But we only get 220v out of it. Looking forward to hear from you.

    Good day. I mistakinly have a 3 phase 10kv transformer 220v delta primary, 480/277v star secondary. However, I must have 480v primary and 240/127 +-v secondary. Do anyone know how to scheive this ? Thanks.

    But you never ran a jumper from a winding down to x0 . So how did u get your neutral ???!

    the main concern on wiring back words isn't so much illegality but rather if the transformer was used for commercial or industrial applications where it will be checked or maintenanced periodically or when necessary the electrician that served it before you isn't going to know that you have done so , because the nameplate states that it be wired the factory way

    This transformer is designed to derive a neutral from an ungrounded 480 volt delta service.

      Technically, the primary of this transformer does not derive a neutral from anywhere as it is referencing power from multiple phases. However this is to be used in a grounded system, as the secondary is Wye and provides a neutral that must be bonded with ground. An ungrounded system uses only a Delta configuration and has many other requirements to work safely and properly.

      @@logycam10 when he says “derive a neutral” he’s referring to the secondary (wye) side.
      It’s not uncommon to use the higher voltage (480V) for longer distance transmission since with higher voltages there is less power loss, and if you run it as a delta you can save having to run a wire for the neutral.
      Then, once at the destination, you connect your wires to a delta-wye step down transformer to get the voltages you need (208/120V) as well as getting the neutral needed for that 120V.
      Since this is a 1:1 transformer the whole purpose of the wye secondary was to create (derive) the neutral so you could use the 277V if needed.

    First, why go from delta to a star configuration? Answer: you need a neutral. 480v is great for motors, but... 277 lets you add a few lights to the load using cheaper/more commonly available ballasts. Or, in the case of 240v systems, you might be adding more motor loads and would like to not have to add a bunch of control transformers in each motor starter - save time and money pulling an extra conductor: just please fuse each starter 120v control power separately for each motor control set, as you are protecting the contactor & start/stop station, not the distribution system. Adding a neutral should have you checking code, and maybe changing out breaker panels that distribute secondary voltages. Lawyers don't know squat about electricity or physics, only that things are UL listed or otherwise certified for an application before scrutinizing code if something burns up.

    You should ground that neutral on primary coil in order to use single phase.

      Yes thank you. I know much more now and work as an electrical engineer. This was me messing around with equipment to learn when I was a teenager

      First of all ... you NEVER used a green conductors as live wires. There is so many incorrect terminologies ... that u would have been fired on the spot with any legitimate electrical contractor. And you instructed your viewers to used the NEC as the proper way to wire a transformer ... the NEC does not teach or show how to wire anything electrical ... it only addresses proper sizing and bonding for fire and safety. And you did not understand anything you were doing ... you were rambling on as you made it up. Do this ... draft a wiring diagram of the connections (primary and secondary) you demostrated and post it at the end of the video ... show the math!

      g quinn Alright, Touchè. You have to realize this was, at the time, a 17 year old kid showing his findings for a subject he was intrigued with. I know that green should never be used a a current carrying conductor, but as stated in the video this was just a project in my garage. I actually make a living off of electrical work now, and I do realize all the mistakes in the video, I realized them when I was making it. But that's not the point. The point is, I made this video for little more than entertainment purposes and stated in the video that it is not professional advice. ( 5:54 ) With all that being said, have a nice day.
