The creature that took the baby hydroptera is called the hydrognath. For why it was there, I'll keep that a secret for now because I might do something more with this cast of characters at a future time. I say "might" because I haven't quite decided yet.
edit: for now, um... I guess he was hungry, and a baby hydroptera seemed like a good snack :)

@@AutisticEmo_fairy_X3 I'm sorry if it made you cry.
The whole short film could've been a lot more tragic though:
While making the ending, I was debating whether the baby dragon would survive the experience... I was actually considering going with a much darker ending
So now I'm glad that I didn't make that ending and I hope you enjoyed it nonetheless! :)

This is such incredible work! I think I'll probably start to see these creatures in my dreams, honestly. The way you made them move is so satisfying. Also, I'm always overjoyed to see other animators and creative people composing their own music for their films, because I also like to compose my own music for my animations and I love multimedia creative processes and DIY approaches. In a world where automation/AI and the pressure to specialize/pick a side are eating away at multimedia/multidisciplinary creative people, it's encouraging to see people take the time to develop and fine tune a whole host of creative skills. It can be a lot to figure out what works best with scoring for film and weaving music and motion together, because the intersection of music and film is such a complex area, but it can lead to uniquely cool and personal art.
Here are some tips I have from what I've learned for anyone curious or anyone who is daydreaming about making something like this:
-It's okay for the score to have open spaces and areas of silence. The music doesn't have to fill every crevice of the film. This helps it breathe, creates ebb and flow, and can serve as a cue for the audience to pay attention to something (emphasis). This way the music becomes part of the flow of the story rather than something kind of constantly overlaid on top of it that may be distracting. But above all, have trust in your beautiful animation work and know that when it comes to film scoring, less can be more for building a scene's mood and using music to enhance the narrative.
-Experiment with your virtual and physical instruments and how you mix them in your DAW. The sound design of how you mix/produce them, layer them, and create texture, rhythm, and space/atmosphere is as important as the base sound design within the scene itself. The way you mix things and how you sculpt the sonic quality of the music can add so much to the storytelling and vibe when you use them very intentionally.
-Depending on the program you use to compose your music, there is probably some sort of way to pull video reference into your composition software so you can match it more closely to picture. When you score something separately, the timing might be off, a key moment might fall flat, or the vibe may just not fit the way you imagined it would when you join them together. The music and the animation are two creatures caught up in a fascinating mating dance or some kind of conversation together, so they'll want to get to know each other and complement what the other one does. Scoring directly to picture can make this tailoring process a lot more efficient.

The animation of the characters is amazing! Truly did an amazing job with portraying character emotions!

And yeah, I agree with you. I tried my best to make the movement more flowy, but probably more could've been done with that. If I could go back and redo it, I'd probably try to figure out how to make the underwater scenes look more like they were underwater... And probably tried to figure out VFX to make splashes and such.

There’ve been a couple comments on the hydrochiroptera’s swimming and the setting not always looking like it’s underwater. I’m an oceanography nerd and I want to help! If you’d like I can go through the short with a fine tooth comb and point out where it’s good and where it could be better but here is a basic explanation of how you can improve their animation.
I think the their swimming lacked a neutral bouyancy and a sort of torpedo-style driftiness. Part of it is their design which has a lot of drag, but don’t worry it’s not an unbelievable amount. When they were swimming for distance it looked great, like a cross between a ray and a dolphin, but when they were exploring or making small movements they looked like they were wasting energy. Underwater animals tend to glide quite a bit more with subtle movements. While examining a reef they let themselves float at odd angles. While drifting something like these creatures might make a small adjustment to how much and what angle one of their their wings/fins is folded and let the difference in drag on either side of their body let them drift into a curve. As they accelerate they might flap one side a little bit harder than the other to turn that way (watch a video of a ray moving along the sea floor).

A beautiful animation! I was scared for a moment it would be like other animations I have watched, where the baby would end up dying despite all their effort to save it

It's funny you mention the alternate ending where the baby dies despite everything... because, in production, I was debating whether he would die or survive. I'm glad I picked the ending I went with, though.

also another odd thing is: they are literaly toothless
also normal glue or sticly slaliva doesn't work under water so either they have an incredibly soft , moldable tongue . . allmost to the point of being amorphous mass , . or they use it allmost like a suction cup

Awww poor baby :C It's unfortunate that it's curiosity has to be punished so traumatically, but nature frequently Be Like That.
Thankfully they seem to be a supportive social species, which helps a lot in these circumstances.

I like to imagine that these guys are real and we just dont know about them because scientists want to keep all the cuteness to themselves. Either that or they dont think we can handle it, which we probably cant
