George was so ahead of our times. I swear he wrote this track for 2020, 2021 and the years ahead. He hated the state of the world even back then, that so many people had so much n so many had so little. Probably why he gave so much $$$ away. Love this track
He lived this too. When he died, it was discovered that he'd given most of the fortune he'd earned away, as he'd earned it. He mostly gave to charities and good causes but also to individuals, even complete strangers, that he felt he could help. He did all this with absolutely no publicity. In fact, when giving to charities, he'd often stipulate no publicity, as a condition. :)
George was quite political in many of his songs. He had a perfect voice pitch etc he produced all of them a lovely man good to people cared thats why his brilliant band stayed with him from the beginning to the end.
George Michael was the best singer I have ever heard and all of the songs that he wrote give so much emotion and you really feel it. His words are haunting. When he sings something it’s like it’s going through you and h goes to your heart and this was a true explanation of what was going on in the 90s and even more so now this is a great fantastic song and I loved it but then again I love all of his songs and this one was special
@@AceM-Reacts In my opinion: the closest to a Prince collaboration circa 1986 - ish would be "Battlestations" by GM when he was with (or rather was) Wham! th-cam.com/video/ha2Wn51W8y4/w-d-xo.html Enjoy!
This song seems to me like a very deep and acid criticize of a honest man about what life became at 90's. A fog atmosphere that probably could be a a simple day in uk, but it's really burning wood. It's always great to see you reactin' a lot of songs that became Original Motion Soundtracks of Our Lifes.
From my favourite George Michael’s album Listen without prejudice. I remember when a lot of people were angry with him as he had chosen not to promote this album. He had a reason and the right to do it anyway… I still listen to it these days and feel like it hasn’t got old. His voice ❤️ .
I'm on a George Michael fase and your video came recommended. I really appreciate your reaction, revue, best commentary I saw for this... Underrated (at its time) song.
Very interesting that you reference John Lennon. This song is off of his listen without prejudice album. On that album he had two songs dedicated to two songwriters he admired very much. One for John Lennon and one for Paul McCartney. Each song is written in the style in which they would’ve written. This is how unbelievably talented George was.
I love when you do George Michael because he's one of my favorite artists of all time and your analysis is next level! 👍 I totally agree with your take on this one. You should do "Waiting For That Day" next. It was the next single from this same album, it has more of a personal/emotional theme, and I think you'll dig it.
@@AceM-Reacts The album's title: Listen Without Prejudice - GM used various genres of music, sounds, songwriting styles and singing styles. In the song in particular "Waiting For That Day" mentioned above, you'll notice the instrumental arrangement of the song. As GM said himself (and I think you can find the clip on TH-cam) that he used the quintessentially "whitest" sound - which was a folk guitar riff and a quintessentially "blackest" sound - which was the drum beat from James Brown's "Funky Drummer" and collabed it with "pop" vocals. So, he mixed all the "races" together for you to: Listen Without Prejudice. 🙂 Please check out his cover of Stevie Wonder's "They Won't Go When I Go" from the same album. Just one piano, a few background singers and George's incredible vocals. The ending of the song makes me tear up each and every time. th-cam.com/video/oata-ksmxjg/w-d-xo.html Enjoy!
This was the first single of ''Listen without Prejudice'' and was a huge hit in 1990. This album give the tone of this album, very different of his Rnb/Funk sound of ''Faith'' and was more in the soft-rock and pop. A solid album and a incredible lyrical and sonically album. My suggestion of George song: ''Father Figure''. You surely love this song, because of his haunting and spacey sound that he work so much in this song.
George Michael did not want to detract from the meaning of the Song by him appearing in the video. Of course his Record label went crazy but he stood his ground and was able to do what talented Artists do and that is to communicate. I think he achieved that goal and I truly enjoyed your review & commentary.
Thanks so much! Yeah, I think his not appearing in the video and instead letting the lyrics speak for themselves made a powerful statement. Seems he wasn't trying to play the role of a pop star with this number.
You're the first one to get it. Some have reacted to this song and been close to it. But, you compared it to John Lennon's Imagine and in my opinion is better than imagine. because John wants us to get along in his song and this one shows all of the warts that we have as a society/ mankind. the only thing I'll say is a letter B is crazy. Think about every lyric. this is an A all around. George Michael's best song.
Wow, probably the best analysis I've heard on this song. I do disagree about the lack of payoff... or rather, not every song needs to have that big climax. I get what you mean, but it's kinda one of those songs like "fade into you" by Mazzy Star where it's just going for one vibe. Don't get me wrong, I'm usually wanting some development that has a biggest moment, but I'm okay with it being kind of one-note this time. I guess it's just subjective though.
I'm not that much of a George Michael fan, but I love this song. It was very emotional for me when this came. It was the early 90's and Gulf War I (dessert shield and dessert storm) were winding up. I had friends being deployed and a lot of us were really preying for time in those days.
This is a song that pleads the listeners for their self reflection. It is targeting all listeners of various social standings and class. Greed is the central theme here, where we all hunger for what we want and we are never satisfied of what we have already. We do not give, nor willing to give for others, be it monetary or love and etc., because we are all too self absorbed about our welfare and are blind (be it ignorantly, or willingly) of others’ falls and shortcomings.

Sounds like you were expecting some corny key change near the end of the song, the big climax of the song, but George never really employed that in his music.
One must think we should pray for people but no.We should pray for time because without time there is no hope. The reality is we need time to change and change takes time. The way things are nothing new the past present and the future is one big mess that is human history. If we ever hope to really change the world we have to do it together as a whole or never ever going to happend.
Funny you mentioned John Lennon since this song is a tribute for him. George also made a song as a tribute to Paul McCartney called 'Heal The Pain' and both of them sang it. You should check that one too.
@@shayla-lee totally agree. This was not for John Lennon. Heal the Pain was for Paul though as Paul’s wife and George’s mother both died of the same cancer.

"Crept out the back door" -- THAT'S WHO WE ARE. Only one Gospel: The Gospel of Reconciliation. Jesus Christ came into THEIR kingdom to reconcile fallen angels unto Himself. He left most of his money to his family. Some to charities and to Shirley his long time freind and original back up singer to Wham.
Yes, but he gave away millions over the years - easily as much as he left.
