The Song of Igor's Campaign - Epic Slavic Music

Also note that resources on Old East Slavic pronunciation are difficult to find at best, so take my pronunciation here with a grain of salt.
With this one, I wanted to pay homage to the East Slavic medieval culture of the Kievan Rus', one of the cultures I am personally most fascinated by. The text which I sing consists of the opening lines (first and fifth stanzas) of the "The Tale of Igor's Campaign," an epic poem in Old East Slavic, the common ancestor language of Rusyn, Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian, before they diverged into separate languages. The poem recounts the campaign of Igor Svyatoslavich against the Cumans (called Polovtsians in the text). Whilst during the previous century, there was fierce debate over the authenticity of the text, and whether it was a more recent forgery, current scholarly consensus agrees that it is indeed a legitimate medieval text from the late 1100's to 1200's. The poem remains to this date the flagship work representative of Old East Slavic literature.
The instrumentation is a mix of modern and medieval East Slavic instruments: first and foremost is a modern gusli, a zither instrument that was the flagship instrument of the Kievan Rus' culture, and was for a long time the primary instruments of the poet-musician, bard-like figures of this culture. The other instrument used prominently is the zhaleika, a reed instrument similar to the zurna of the Middle-East, once widely used by the East Slavs, and still used regionally in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, although not as prominently as modern instruments like the balalaika or the bandura. A bagpipe, called volynka by the Eastern Slavs, also accompanies the music, as it was a prominent instrument of the area up until recent centuries, as well as a hurdy-gurdy, which was a massively important instrument in the area, and would remain so up until the 1800's whereas it had mostly died-out in Western Europe. A jaw-harp also accompanies the instrumentation, as it was also widely used back then in the area.

Têm uma vasta gama de obras que pode explorar sobre o assunto, poesia era o que não faltava em Portugal, especialmente poesia marítima. Na sua música "Piratas dos Mediterrâneo", comentei um pouco acerca da cultura naval portuguesa e trechos de poemas e instrumentos que poderia usar pra compô-la. Falo especialmente sobre coisas navais, pois os portugueses foram os grandes mestres dos mares (especialmente no século XVI, que você aborda músicas renascentistas, portanto já tem experiência em músicas desse período. Доброго дня. Так же хотел бы поблагодарить Фараю за творчество. Я более всего полюбил его музыку с песнями "Белизариус" и "Сыны Марса". Всё таки это шикарный фолк с аутентичными инструментами. Музыка, что погружает в века. Каждая эпоха играет своими мелодиями, и подобная возможность услышать седую древность, хоть и в авторском исполнении - бесценна.

Big thanks to you, Farya, for this work, truly "The Song of Igor's Campaign" is one of the greatest heritages we, Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians carry :D for the people, who are curious, "The Song" (literally, "The Word") is about the real campaign of Igor Svyatoslavich, the prince of Novgorod Severskiy (modern-day Ukraine), in the lands of Polovtsy (East Slavic name for Cumans, which is still in use) in 1185, who throughout the 11th and 12th centuries almost without stopping continued attacking the Rus' lands, like, for example, the Huns were attacking China or Rome. This campaign wasn't succesful and Igor was even captured by their khan Könchek, but this heroic epic glorifies the courage and selflessness of Igor and the Rus' warriors. It's still considered one of the greatest masterpieces of both Russian and Ukrainian literature, largely due to the fact that it was written on their native language instead of Church Slavonic
Also, I'd like to give some notes about your reading of Old East Slavic text, which I've noticed (I am not a linguist, so, anybody correct me, if I am false)
-letter ѣ, which was used in Russian until 1918, sounds like another Cyrillic letter - "е", possibly you confused it with modern pronounciation of "ь" (old Russian - Половѣц, modern - Половец)
-letters ъ and ь in modern Russian don't have any sound and reflect the "hardness" or "softeness" of the previous consonant letter, at the same time in Old East Slavic they had sounds of "ŏ" (which is like heavily muted "o" or "a") and "ĕ" (which is like heavily muted "e"); I believe they keep such a pronunciation in modern Bulgarian (old Russian - слово о пълкѹ Игоревѣ, modern - слово о полку Игореве)
-also, as somebody already noted, the pronunciation of letters was more literal, without "akanye" which appears in modern-day Russian because of influence of the Muscovite dialect ("Москва" - "mAskva"), most of the ancient Rus' dialects didn't have it ("Москва" -"mOskva")
But in general your pronounciation is very nice and understandable, it's still very nice to hear the speech of our ancestors :D

Аканье, если не ошибаюсь, до сих пор чисто московская фишка (Золотого кольца). Ни на Дальнем Востоке, ни на Урале, ни в СПб - не замечал аканья в речи, когда жил там. Так что, не думаю, что это верно заявлять, мол аканье это модерн дей рашен. Исключительно москвобадская особенность. Но текст классный, уверен для многих он будет интересен - добра)
1) I don't mean it personally, just, people, if someone gives you lessons about Slavic languages in TH-cam comments, don't take him seriously. I did that a lot, I am doing that a lot and maybe getting better, but sincerely, don't take us seriously. (Except for when the person speaks about their own language of course)
2) How much the Russian pronunciation of ѣ determines the Old East Slavic one? 🙃
Yeah, according to my notion of Slavic languages (based largely on Interslavic and its basic development from the real Slavic languages), I too would say at least that akanye is just off... I wonder how anyone could come to the conclusion that there was akanye in Old East Slavic...
@@Turagrong dude, I've mentioned, that I'm not a linguist and based my notes on my knowledge, and gave a comment on his pronouncation just because I know that Farya is very careful about this and maybe my notes could be useful for him. I don't want to critise him, vice versa, I'm very happy for what he did! Also, about ѣ, since I'm a Russian myself and Old East Slavic is a direct predessesor of modern Russian (as well, as of modern Ukrainian and Belarusian), I've made a comment from my Russian side. Also, I've checked some info and from what I've got, ѣ sounded like smth between "ye" and "ee", and bcuz of that in Russian it started to sound like "ye", and in Ukrainian like "ee", or smth like that. Still it had some sounds, but because ѣ looks a bit like ь, I supposed that Farya just confused that, well, it's okay
@@Turagrong about akanye, I think that someone could come to the conclusion that Old East Slavic had it just because modern Russian has it, but as I said before, modern Russian has it only because of Muscovite dialect, other dialects, including Northern of Yaroslavl and Novgorod or Southern of Ryazan and Tula didn't have it

Rus is the common predecessor of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus as well as the Holy Roman Empire is for Germany, Netherlands and Luxembourg (Germans, Dutch and Luxembourgians nowadays are also three people with their own three languages).

As someone who speaks Polish, Belarusian, Ukrainian and pre-1918 Russian, I find old Slavic really odd but also surprisingly familiar.

Early 1900s russian is not much different from modern russian. Spelling rules do not count when it comes to speech. So we all can speak pre-1918 Russian to a certain degree
Не представляю, чем русский до 1918 от нынешнего русского принципиально отличается, кроме орфографии и вроде как падежных форм некоторых, это буквально тот же язык, разве что сейчас появилось некоторое количество неологизмов, а некоторые слова ушли из обихода, но как минимум мы уж точно поймём носителей русского языка начала ХХ века, возможно, они не все наши слова поймут, но это не настолько большие отличия, чтобы считать эти языки разными.

I was thinking about Tsar Dušan, but Kievan Rus' is such a fascinating and mythical period for the East Slavs, and this song captures that ancient glory so beautifully!

Sou falante de português. É impressionante como o eslavo ocidental é muito mais familiar pra mim (foneticamente falando) que o ocidental, ou até mesmo que as línguas germânicas. Ao longe, se ouvir um russo conversando, sem prestar atenção na fala, é possível me confundir, achando ser português.

@@maximiliaanxiv188 eu sei, mas é a língua ancestral do russo. É eslavo oriental medieval, e é igualmente semelhante. Já vi vídeos de alguns russos falando português e eles conseguem falar com perfeição (não vou generalizar, obviamente alguns tem mais dificuldade) o português, tanto o sotaque de Portugal quanto o do Brasil. Assim como já vi também lusófonos que falam línguas eslavas com uma acuracidade fonética sensacional. Temos sim muito em comum.

Я буквально позавчера узнал о данном исполнителе. Очень красивое исполнение, передаёт дух Древней Руси. Вообще, как мне кажется, есть большое сходство между русской и древнегреческой (византийской) музыкой. Может быть, потому что византийская культура была в какой то степени близка восточным славянам, это и определило выбор именно православной веры...
Автор специально, правда на английском, написал, что тут музьіка єто современньій домьісел на историческую тему. Притом, сама музьіка сделана скорее ориентируясь на греческую, чем на реальньіе инструметьі Киевской Руси. И слова почти не разобрать.
Ближе к оригиналу , "Слово" исполняет белорусская группа " Старьій Ольса".
Общая церковная культура, плюс были взаимосвязи византийской культуры с южнославянской, родственной восточнославянской (церковнославянский язык был общим для Болгарии, Сербии, Руси, а также Молдовы, бывшей романской по языку, но в то же время восточнохристианской с близостью к Руси и Болгарии).

1)"О" остается "о", аканье появилось примерно в 16 веке.
2)"ѣ" читается как русское "е"
3)"E" остается "e"

There's a character I share a name with in the Song, who goes down dual-wielding sabers like a complete badass. Reading that part in the Literature class is probs my favorite 9th grade memory. 😁
