Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, we’re going to be discussing JK Rowling, The Goblet of Fire, and the chapter that took her 13 attempts.
I am of course talking about chapter 9 -‘The Dark Mark’. Given that JK Rowling had written several books up to this point, it’s unusual that she would suddenly just get-stuck. It has been reported that this chapter alone took Rowling 13 tries, which is honestly just adding insult to injury given that she already had to rewrite a good portion of the Goblet of Fire to remove a character, among other things. 13 times- can you imagine rewriting something 13 times? A whole chapter? That’s the type of thing that would make you want to throw your computer off the balcony. In an interview, Rowling even expressed that she considered just giving up at this point:
Sometimes, even at this stage, you can see trouble looming; nearly all of the six published books have had Chapters of Doom. The quintessential, never, I hope, to be beaten Chapter That Nearly Broke My Will To Go On was chapter nine, ‘Goblet of Fire’ (appropriately enough, ‘The Dark Mark’.)
She was also asked:
How many rough copies or rewrites of a chapter do you do before you get it right?
Loads and loads and loads. The worst ever was 13 different versions of one chapter. I hated that chapter so much; at one point, I thought of missing it out altogether and just putting in a page saying 'Chapter 9 was too difficult' and going straight to Chapter 10.
But, fortunately for us, by the time Rowling got to chapter 9 of book 4, she had already introduced the world to Harry Potter- by this point she had no other choice - the show would have to go on.
But the question stands: Why did this particular chapter cause Rowling so much trouble? We were already so far in to the Harry Potter series- what happened?
The reason that chapter 9 was so difficult was because it was the chapter that kicked off the plot for the Goblet of Fire - this was the chapter that could make or break the interest of the reader, and there was A LOT going on.
It was in this chapter that Barty Crouch jr breaks loose and begins to work on his masters return from the shadows. He escapes, steals Harry's wand, and then fires the Dark Mark in to the sky- calling the death eaters. But all of this had to be done without giving away too many clues to an attentive reader.
JK Rowling later discusses the chapter with screenwriter Steve Kloves who worked on the Goblet of Fire:
That story I must have spent three or four months trying to make dramatically comprehensible on screen -
I am so sorry -
...and every time I did it, y'know, everyone, y'know -
“I am so sorry, Steve, because I've handed you a problem that had tortured me...because the scene in the Quidditch World Cup where you first see but don't see Barty Crouch, and you don't know what's going on, and the Dark Mark appears for the first time and it's incredibly obscure in every sense, what's going on there and trying to make that appear in any way... coherent (laughs) to the reader while obscuring as much as I wanted to obscure...was terrible. I had about thirteen drafts about that chapter.”

Books are almost always better than adaptations IMO. Even epic movie productions like the LOTR trilogy can't capture the full story with all details

I was thinking if Snape was a death eater wouldn’t he have know that Sirius wasn’t a death eater and he didn’t do anything and he would’ve know that Peter was the spy or did he hate Sirius so much he didn’t tell dumbledore?
jack rogers all the death eaters in Azkaban knew so why wouldn’t he know?
On the night that Sirius confronted peter for giving up James and Lily’s location. Peter cut off his finger and transformed himself into a rat and vanished making it look like Sirius spell attack had destroyed his body. So Sirius was arrested for the murder of peter. During the 13 years that Sirius was in Azkaban, peter never during those 13 years ever changed back to a person and stayed at a rat so for people wouldn’t see that he was still alive. Now to see it more clearly by the court. The story was like the following. Sirius has gone rogue and told Voldemort about James and lily meanwhile going after peter making it look like he was going after his own team (having lupin be his next target) but since peter vanished into a rat and the finger was left in the public. It made peter look like the victim and was killed in action. Sirius not having peter after the battle, he had no proof of peter being the person who told Voldemort so he ended up getting the blame by the public. Now with Snape, he wasn’t a full time death eater so he might’ve not known about peter or didn’t care about peter because he was dead to the public. He might’ve not known about Sirius too because, he wasn’t always there with Voldemort cuz he wasn’t a full time death eater. Also Voldemort didn’t know if he could trust Snape because he was a teacher at Hogwarts and hung around with Dumbledore. So Voldemort might’ve not told him everything. That’s why Snape had to kill Dumbledore, to get Voldemort’s full trust which he did but you know with Voldemort wanting all the power for himself and thinking that snape was the owner of the elder wand he just decided to kill him.

The parts that were left out in the maze were unnecessary to the plot, and would've dragged the movie. But it was ridiculous not showing the Quidditch World Cup.

Of course I can imagine writing and rewriting something 13 time. Hemingway admitted he rewrote the end of Farewell to arms 37 times. People didn’t believe him. When he died, among the papers, they found almost 40 versions of that ending, so Hemingway wasn’t lying.
I am reading them for the first time (I am 40)...I know, I got the memo late. I am on the Goblet of Fire right now and I just noticed how complex are the plots in this book! Amazing!

My favorite book and film is Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone. I love the Half-Blood Prince book but not the film, it’s my least favorite of the movies because of how different it is than the book. I’m not a fan of the more focus on the love stories and less on Riddle’s backstory

2:13 not quite correct, he broke free of the imperius curse and fired the dark mark to frighten the death eaters who hadn't attempted to find and help voldemort. After that Crouch Jr. was recaptured and put back under his father's imperius curse.
Voldemort and Wormtail discover that Barty Crouch Jr. is still alive because of Bertha Jorkins, not because of anything that happens in the dark mark.
I could've sworn she said first chapter of book 1 was the hardest.

I went to school for writing and writing something 13 times isn't a big deal at all lol. Rewrites are literally no big deal. It can happen 20 times. A good writer doesn't care about the number.
It's not as easy when you're hella popular and have sky high expectations from people.

4 is my favorite.
The very beginning of chapter 9 is actually my very favorite chapter. I know it's such a terrible chapter. But Hanging out drinking hot cocoa everybody's reminiscing about the day as they're getting tired because it's getting late but they're enjoying themselves so much. It reminds me of childhood so much it's nostalgic. Going to a late movie matinee, the arcade, Roller skating... Till 11pm just doing something fun as it's getting later at night with a group of friend's. Those are the best moments of youth. Lol it's nice to remember those time's to miss being young and having time to just have fun.
She got on lucky 13. I have trouble reading so haven't read all them. I trying read chamber of secrets go to middle of the book haven't finished it.

I'm reading GoF now and Harry has just received a tissue as a present. As a present it's pretty rubbish, though quite practical. But doesn't this mean the Dursley's used owl post? I doubt Hogwarts has an address as such and a muggle postman wouldn't be able to find it. So they must have done. They hated anything to do with the wuzarding world. So, if you think about it, it's pretty big of them to do this. Plus what owl would they use? Did Dumbledore send them a school owl every Christmas for this use?

Yeah, she wrote a fantastic series of books, but can I just get a general ”fuck J K Rowling” out there?
