It is not your employer's duty to help you bring up your kids, make a decision one way or the other, and if you cannot afford them in terms of time or money,do not have them! Like those who burden their colleagues with extra work and duty by having all the school holiday periods off work, ringing in late, and generally expecting others to shoulder their burdens.this is if anything is the true quantum of selfishness.Accept life for what it is,and accept you cannot be or have everything you want.

at the end of the day, it isn't the business's fault YOU decided to have a child, why should they pay YOU money to raise YOUR child when YOU aren't working?

Because that's how a society works. Your Employee has gone through the government system Education,NHS which you benefit from and so on you are putting back into the infrastructure and assuring the next generation gets a well rounded person thats how society is meant to work we take care of each other. A lot of small businesses receive great tax breaks and often pay mini wage which gets topped up by the government because its not enough to live on.

+newgamer85 But why isn't the employer entitled to know when you are leaving (emergencies aside) and when you are returning? Barring a very sad turn of events that may require mum or baby to have more time off than planned, there should be no problem with saying when you intend to come back to work. As someone who was appointed to cover a maternity leave post, I never knew from one week to the next if I was going to have work as the lady I was covering for kept changing her return date. It isn't too much to be able to have those conversations.

Katie actually made very valid points here. Why should the employer bare the burden of the child? In addition, it should be the role of a businesswoman to put her business before everything else. There are options in this wonderful country that allows parents to leave their child and continue working. It's the mindset of the parents which determine which route they take and the employer has no say in this and should therefore not have to pay for them.

Ok just to get thing rights 6 weeks is not enough for a baby to be handed over to a day care centre. If it's unpaid then no one will have children. I believe it's a personal choice. Some take 4 weeks some take upto a year. U can't just make a decision for everyone. When my 2nd child was born it took doctors and consultants etc to very find out what was wrong with my baby. Every time I gave him milk he would be sick and have had rash etc. Doctors said I need to give him special milk and I need to keep close eye on him. He was in and out of hospital. If I was not on maternity leave would day care take him to hospital stay with him until he gets better no. I have a colleague who said she came back after 6 month and that was her biggest mistake. Financially, physically, mentally drained.

Hi, bored so going through bs on you tube. this is 2022 so I can only go by what is going on now or what's happened to me now and in my country, Canada.
I waited 10 years after marriage to have children for financial reasons plus we were having a blast really.... My husband was military and I was a nurse aid. When I finally got pregnant, in the Canadian forces, that was the first year that they gave military personnel 1 year maternity leave at I believe 90% wage. My employer had been doing this for years (back in 2001) already. So we took 6 months each to stay home and bond with our child and now children with this benefit. I too believe that if ya can't afford them then don't have them mentality but I can honestly say that that time was beneficial to us not only because we struggled with our Childs disability but because it helped up to thrive as a family. I also believe that daycare should not be subsidized, as I worked around my husband career and thankfully because we waited, we were able to do this without daycare. My opinion on all of this is that if the employer is focused on the employee showing empathy and not cracking the whip but having good relations with their employees, then this makes for a better work place with happy employees focused on doing a good and productive job at the end of the day. Happy employees means happy employer and I stick by this 100%

While I believe prospective parents should consider finances beforehand let's not forget that bringing children into the world is the most important thing anyone can do and the interests of said children should always come first. I was lucky and able to have time off when I gave birth but physically I wouldn't have been able to work 6 weeks after. Some circumstances don't allow for this to be feasible. A little bit of compassion wouldn't do any harm towards new mums.

I read Katie’s comments on TH-cam. From Katie I look for opinions on all kind of things, and I work from a very basic principle. Whatever Katie’s latest rant exudes I simply concur the opposite. From telling us that only 334 people under 60 have died of Covid, to having a go at people with health issues, to ridiculing people with mental issues, I am surprised that anyone actually agrees with what Katie says. But then we all have our opinions, but most of us form them from a position honesty intending purely to express genuinely how we feel about something. Katie, well she simply loves to be controversial, whilst insulting to anyone who dares to differ from her, or who fails to meet her “high” standards. I take solace in the fact that if we ever met, she would despise me, I can think of nothing more that comfort me and make me feel secure with my thoughts, and my sincerely held views.

Maternity leave legislation was originally designed to ensure that women did not suffer unfairly in the workplace in comparison to men. That is to say, the law does not allow discrimination based on sex (and therefore likelihood to have children) and women cannot be fired for becoming pregnant. However, I do not believe the law was ever designed to allow women to take 12 months off work, receiving full pay for some of that time, and then return as if they'd never been away. What I find the most irritating is that women who choose not to have children still have to be considered for promotion on equal footing to someone who had 9 of the last 12 months off work going to baby yoga classes and 'Mummy and Me'. That's not my definition of equality.

I think it's important to remember though, that in most places, women actually don't have a choice, and are forced to be mothers. And part of their responsibility, is being able to provide for their children, and the job security that comes with maternity benefits is often essential to the well-being of the child.

I won’t employ any women under the age of 40. Less chance of them wanting to start a family or have another child. The disruption of having someone off work, fully paid with a chance of them never returning is too greater risk for me as an employer. It’s either men, or women over the age of 40. And women of this age and older are less likely to have breakdowns, meltdowns, false sexual harassment claims in the workplace and whatever else the young women of today thrive on. Thank goodness I am not navigating the dating scene with women in there 20’s and 30’s either. That’s even more perilous than employing a woman of that age group. I feel sorry for the young men of today.

Why is the Middle East always targeted? The Middle East is too broad to make that statement. There are several countries all sharing different views. I'm studying the Middle East as part of my Uni course and as far as I've researched, I've never come across anyone stating this as an issue. What I have seen as an issue is women in Syria who want to have children but are not having children because of their unsafe society and suffering caused by their tyrannical ruler.

she has surprised me a bit, but again what she has said is true because even a family member of mine commented a long time ago over someone and told me that this woman who is leaving work to have a baby isn't coming back to work or she wouldn't get the benefits that Katie is right they do have to pay out for. I'm agreeing with her but I'm not insisting things should change.
With Katie i get the impression everyone should be treated the same and that people need to toughen up - work is work, its not a playground - and to be prepared for things to get a lot harder.... because, i reckon she has had a hard life and her way to sort of get on top of her game is to toughen up to a lot of life's challenges but she has chosen to do that, Armour up and go out into this world and so when people dis her she don't care, but the point is by doing that she has chosen to suppress her softer side.
Does Katie get soft and show her underbelly? PROBABLY YES TO THE PEOPLE VERY CLOSEST TO HER!
      Does Katie get angry? YES
      Does Katie cry? IN PRIVATE
Do we think she has or may have an explosive temper? YES
Can she be nice and pleasant and become more respectful YES
She is not going to break down or show a vulnerable side to her on TV because shes just that - on TV! And I'm sure not comfortable with displaying public sets of emotion - do we think she will go on Piers Morgan for a life story - UNDECIDED. The less weakness she shows, the more, this population will probably probe her for find out one and when they do if they do they will use this against her because of the bold and out right statements she says - and because i know people. I am 100 percent sure Katie doesn't want to give off any weakness at all, so, the more others are going to pick at her to get a reaction but the only reaction they may get is the end of her temper that is if they have really got to her
Do we think she can be a b.i.t.c.h?
She can if she wants to be.
So unless you are a strong personality and are quick with the tongue - do not take her on. She is hazardous to your health - mental being - she sometimes should come with a warning label to softer personalities - she will tell you how it is and she will be honest - perhaps a little too honest and doesn't, I believe, she doesn't believe in hurting others feelings, and does not apologize either for it YOU WILL NOT GET TO SEE HER SOFTER SIDE ON TV
Her softer side will be with friends and family the people she can trust and wouldn't try to manipulate or hurt her or use what they know to their advantage so Katie if you get to read this - just keep your head up high and continue on - all of people would kill to see you fall.

The "if you can't afford kids don't have them" brigade seem to lack all understanding of economics. Firstly, if all people who were working or who were not entirely financially independent didn't have kids, that would really knock our population. I know pub logic might make people think that in an over-crowded world that's a good thing, but economics dictates that a shrinking population is a crisis. Secondly, your pensions aren't all nicely saved up for when you're old. That's why we have the pension crisis. The next generation whose rights you so keenly snub will be paying for your pensions! If the population goes down, that pension crisis is going to become even worse and you are going to have to work hard despite being old and possibly seriously ill with no sign of retirement. You could argue that people could save to take care of that, but NEWSFLASH, not everyone is in a well paying job and some people live hand to mouth. I hate the Ayn Rand brigade, they have no human compassion, and even less actual logic.

+bluevan12 "These people who choose not to have kids..."? You say that as bough we are an alien species. My mother may have benefitted from maternity pay, but that's where the handouts end. She didn't get 16hrs free childcare, child benefits, working tax credits (now defunct), or any of the other pandering that society provided just she's popped out a child or two. Her and my dad were financially hard up in the 80s. She was a nurse and dad was a steel worker. They made it through and gradually improved their lot through hard work, not handouts.

I would differently only allow six weeks unpaid leave, because the rest of the time the women are just haveing fun on the taxpayers expense.

Dear miss Rojek. Before you start throwing insults you might want ro read people's comments first. As for spelling and grammar, I didn't know this was a job application and not TH-cam. Then to say I make no sense, at what point do I not mmake sense or is it I may have made some spelling mistakes, so in turn because of that I don't make sense?????. Then to call me sexist for saying men can't run offices, I am a man you silly little girl. Say hi to Katie when you see her.

Far from it.She is one of lifes failures.
Can't hold down a job (Sacked at the MET office). Can't run a business (Her firm is in financial trouble). And finally has a failed marriage behind her because she shagged married men in fields (and tipped off the paps to boot).
And because of her financial situation, she has had to resort to saying inflammatory things on daytime TV.In the hope it will get her more TV work & tabloid coverage.
I will give her credit - It has worked to a degree.

i think the key here is in the wording... should businesses help support NEW mums? 100% agree with it as all aspects with being a NEW parent can be difficult to navigate. However so many mothers consistently abuse the privileges of being a worker by expecting those without kids to drop their own lives and take on extra workload to accommodate the parents that wont get childcare because they dont want to pay for it, or those who MUST have peak times of year off/want to go to see the kids on school sports day etc etc etc. If you cant afford childcare or have family support then dont expect other workers or employers to support your lifestyle unless youre willing to take a pay reduction or play fair when it comes to taking time off.

The Rojek woman to whom your referring has a habit of doing this, she's a keyboard warrior who loves to troll people with controversial opinions and put downs waiting for people to bite back, she's sad and not worth bothering with (she has contradicted herself before with her diatribe, she just says whatever's controversial enough to get a reaction) I wouldn't bother if I were you! Have a good day..

There is a difference between no nonsense and being tactless. She is tactless, and that is one of her big failings. She uses insults as an argument and is a bully. I can put an argument across, but I don't belittle others, especially children, in the process.
