  • Washington has had some really good QBs over the last few years, but Sam Huard was supposed to be the best. Sadly, after becoming a five star recruit, the he got screwed over at Washington and is now headed to the FCS. Today we will tell his story and talk about what happened, enjoy!

As a Uw fan from Washington, I think you hit the nail on the head with this video. His hs senior year was the covid season and was played in the spring and was only 6 games, he made the decision to play the season instead of leave early for Washington. Because of that he got the passing yard record for the state. I think if he would have left early and enrolled in winter quarter, it would had helped him fight for the starting job. I went to the season opener against Montana and there were fans wanting him to be subbed in and played. Overall Jimmy lake really didn't manage the team well that year. Ever time you saw Sam play it was the same result, he didn't look ready. Doesn't surprise me he left but Its funny that he transferred to Cal Ploy, their freshman All American TE transferred to Washington prior to Sam leaving.

Worst offense of all time? Washington exploded for 7 points against Montana in Lake and OC Donovan's second year. Not zero points, not 3 points, not 6 points, but 7 entire points, and they didn't even need overtime to score than many points.

Only decision he could make, penix is deboer's guy and decided to come back, so sam either sat for another year with no guarantee of being the successor, or transfer and start, he hasn't played so no FBS was going to give him a starting gig right away, just look at ole miss and wisconsin's rooms.

Pretty good analysis of the Huard situation. You definitely were “kind” (to your credit) about the terrible situation at UW when he arrived. Coach Petersen can coach QB’s but he completely checked out his last year and UW was ok but running on fumes. When DC Jimmy Lake took over he announced that Washington was going to RUN THE DAMN BALL and rely on the Defense. Lake turned out to be a terrible head coach (although I expect at some point he’ll turn up as a Defensive coach somewhere) and started Dylan Morris over Huard because he wanted a game manager. Sam still needed a lot of work but the Offensive Coordinator was just as bad as Coach Lake. Huard basically had a lost year in 2021. I’m sure he selected Cal Poly because his confidence was mostly shot and needed a friendly, familiar coach. I would’ve liked to see him stay and develop under Coach DeBoer after Penix leaves but I wish him the best of luck. He really didn’t deserve to land into the UW dumpster fire.

The Beaver DBs were one of the best groups in the country, there were 20-30mph crosswinds, also rain, and Penix still shredded them. The media has done Penix dirty by putting so much focus on C. Williams. That dude isn't even half the QB that Penix is. Then, I hope we see Huard again, he deserves a fair shot.

Really thought the way they brought Penix Jr in seemed like the perfect placeholder having familiarity with DeBoer while being able to set that perfect example for an also left handed Huard to inherit that offense the following year. Never can blame a kid for stepping out from underneath the cover of expectations and choosing the best situation for him at the end of the day, with the transfer portal being what it is now, I do have a feeling this is not the last stop for young Huard. Not everyone wants to go through that very stressful, often arduous, and sometimes it takes a long waiting process to see the field, it takes commitment while really forging the metal to the grindstone and become that refined product that is the clear cut no.1 guy at the end of the week, will be very happy to see him shine at Cal Poly as well though.

With the benefit of hindsight, Sam Huard had an unspectacular season at Cal Poly, especially against some of the top FCS schools that were on the schedule. Looking at the scoreboard, it was clear Cal Poly was a pretty terrible team so it's unclear how well he actually played since Cal Poly's offensive line was probably pretty poor.
In 2024, Sam transferred to Utah. Seems like a strange decision since Cam Rising is coming back after missing all of 2023, and if he's healthy, or even 80-90%, he's probably going to be the starting QB since he has a proven track record in the PAC-12. So while Sam in principle could compete for the starting job, he would have been much better off trying to find a school with either no returning starting QB, or a returning QB who wasn't very good last year.
Latest news out of Utah is that Sam isn't even the backup QB going into the season, but got beat out by a true freshman, and it now the 3rd or even 4th string QB at Utah. So barring injuries to the top 2 QB's, Sam won't be seeing the field for any meaningful minutes in 2024. So where does Sam go from here?

Samuel has not, I repeat NOT been a disappointment here at Washington. The young man simply had to wait a year or so to develop and acquaint himself with the drastically more complex college offensive scheme. Then going into his red shirt freshman year as we all know there was a coaching change and thank the heavens one of my the absolute greatest portal moves thus far. Samual, as we clearly now see in hindsight, was obviously outmatched by the significantly more experienced QB that Michael Penix Jr. was. The young prodigy, Huard, then found himself not being able to win the starting job as a red shirt sophomore as he'd rightfully expected to be able to. This time the further delay was due to the simply incredible news that Mr. Penix is returning to Montlake to make use of his final year of eligibility to take UW to the CFP. Unfortunately Sam has decided that he cannot wait one more year to be able to start. As far as why Samual would choose Cal Poly, it is actually very clear and simple as was evidenced by his choice of UW in the first place, the wise youngster cares greatly about his education.

3 of my friends play at Cal Poly 2 are receivers one of them went FBS out of hs and the other was a freshman all American 2 years ago the third one is a quarterback so Idk how hyped he is lol but ik my 2 other buddies were talking about how hyped they are to have him moral of this comment tho was that as much as from the outside it looks like Cal Poly is terrible they’re actually pretty good they also just happened to play in the toughest conference in the FCS

Good luck to this kid. He’ll be going against Sac state this year which is actually a solid program full of dudes who should be in bigger schools.

Really humble kid I'm sure he will be. He will be extremely successful at whatever he does. I wouldn't count out his football career out just yet. His dad's wine is a must try, by a case every year. Try passing time wine

I don't think as many people consider him disappointnent as you think. Dude joined the team at the worst time. His first coach was potentially the worst head coach in school history (and we went 0-12 with another coach). Sam didn't have a chance to develop under Lake and wasn't ready when Debeor came in. His only shot was in the Apple Cup where we got out coached at every level. I still think he'll be good, he just wants to play and Penix is great. So he joined his high school coach at Cal Poly. And I don't think he'll finish his career there.

I say stay on the fcs lvl do great things there go to the next lvl. Fcs has become tuffer over the years an is still a very respectable League.

Id never really watched his HS film - amazing stuff! Very curious why he could not replicate that at UW (of course I am basing my opinion on the terrible Apple Cup performance). I agree, he made the right decision to move on. Get lots of playing time, get his confidence back and he will be fine. Maybe even return to UW after Penix leaves??

It seems so many 4 and 5 star incoming freshmen say the same thing; I want to go to a top school to compete with the best. After the first year, if they’re not starting, they transfer portal.

My wife and I both graduated from UW. I'm disappointed he made the decision to leave UW but it's his choice. I hope he gets playing time down in Cal Poly and maybe decides to come back up to the beautiful PNW to compete for the job here next season. Best of luck Sam! (Also my 9 month old sons name).

The atrocity in the situation is not that Huard left and dropped down to FCS, it is simply that Husky coaching staff did not have the gumption to tell Morris to leave because Huard was the future QB, now he is gone. With portal, etc. I would not be surprised if he comes back to UW.

Sam wasn’t that good. Face the facts Penix is the truth and took over the spot and UW is top 10 due to the QB who isn’t Huard.!!

I don’t understand why this is incredibly hard to comprehend for a lot of people…. People keep hyping up average and below average players… as a Oregon fan I’ve seen thrash oregon a couple of times but mainly because our team was on a complete rebuild… Washington wasn’t playing anybody all year until they had to face Alabama and well you saw how good they actually were which was just an average team

I am a. big fan of husky football. What happened to Sam is the story of many star high school players as well, Sam got caught up into a bad offensive scheme in his beginning at UW, Sam came to WAsh when there was coaching transition. Not only that jimmy Lakes picked the wrong OC to run the office. JimmLakes did not want to run a good passing office. He want a run first power game, UW did not have offensive line and power backs to make it work. Finally Lakes and the OC exited and Sam was picked to start the wash state game. The coaching staff had no serious game plan and grossly underprepared the qb for that game. Sam played badly and that has dogged him at WASH. This a flashback to Jake Haener. Jake was put into the Cal game to replace a under performing starter. Jack through a pick six an d lost the game. That killed Jake Haener s career at wash. Next Eason came in and beat out Haener. Eason career at Wash did not pan out. Eason never showed any talent. But HAENER went to fresno state and became a star under Debour. ALl the Husky fans though Haener was a bozo. But Haener proved us wrong under the OC Debour. So you see it is the system and OC that shapes a QBs.
career. I hope Sam will flower and become a star QB under new coaching. It will be just like Jake Header did at Fresno state
    Career
