  • From the SPSSI UN Committee:
While climate change affects everyone, communities who are already vulnerable and marginalized are facing the harshest consequences of climate change. A 2021 report from the United Nations spotlighted that “80 percent of the displaced by climate related disasters and changes around the world are women and girls.” As climate emergencies worldwide damage and destroy schools, food and water supplies, and housing, an alarming number of girls face gender-based violence (GBV) and are being forced into child marriage. GBV increases during or after climate events for girls, women, and gender minorities, especially among communities that face issues such as economic instability, food insecurity, mental stress, disrupted infrastructure, and exacerbated gender inequality. The purpose of this side event is to address the causes, consequences, and solutions to the intersections among climate change and gender-related economic and social injustices through an expert panel of psychologists, social scientists, and community leaders in the Global South and the Global North.
