      @@KatyDidRocks oh my goodness Katy! The coolest, most colorful concretions, filled with wood, jasper, fossils and so much more! It's a top rockhounding site in MT for sure. Things I have come across there I haven't seen anywhere else. Definitely need 4 wheel drive to get way back there right now. You can go way far back on the gravel road. The contrast in the colors of the landscape is breathtaking. Geologists have been studying that area for a long time- lots on the internet. Everyone reading this needs to check it out! It's a large area, lots of exploring for us all!

    Thanks for sharing another post KatyDid much appreciated👍 That was really a very nice gesture by Tammy to invite you along to one of her favorite hounding spots. It's great meeting people who enjoy sharing the adventure of searching/finding/exposing lovely bits of mother earth, one of the two main reasons I joined a rock club but I digress. Good people, beautiful places, fun adventures and hopefully good rocks! 😁 One note: At the 5:00 min mark you talk about cutting petrified wood open and its all black inside...I too have experienced this on quite a few interesting pieces and was given a small bit of advice from a guy named Greg out in the PNW who is semi-famous for exposing fossils that changed everything. He said to go ahead and polish up the surface like any other and then when done, soak the specimen in bleach, at first I thought he was pulling my leg but he was very detailed...so I did it... I let them sit for a couple weeks to get good penetration of the bleach and its absolutely amazing, much of the natural wood tone came back along with clearly seeing the rings and still having a really nice polished surface, the black carbon sloughs off into the unused bleach. As the specimen dries, the bleach will crust to the surface as a white powder until completely evaporated, rinse, buff your flat surface again with cerium oxide and voila.😎 Got a great one from an Ash tree with pyrite inclusions that turned out very nice. Ok enough about that, the first agate you picked up was IMHO a really super crazy nice chunk of seam agate/quartz sandwich with beautiful twisty banding. (I immediately thought: Cut it in the center parallel to the exposed side and then flat lap both flat surfaces from the cut and freeform cab the open side showing the quartz, like a big agate mouth with polished lips and quartz teeth..sorry my two cents) Loved the sizes of those pet wood chunks you ladies were finding out there, really great size for bookends! Yes, I believe you could call that orange included carnelian. haha Wow, what a really great spot, you appeared to have pretty good weather, were in a really nice place sky that stretched out wide, hunting and finding lots of really great stuff to expose what's not to like. 🤷‍♂️🤔👍 Thanks again for bringing your adventures to us rock hungry tubers! Have a nice week ahead~

    Awesome show, the purple and green rock is porcelanite, it is made from burning coal seams baking clay. Also, looks like you are just west of Terry, that first wierd rock early on could be agatized bog, look for little cattail leaf fossils, I know there is a bunch of it south of miles city...

      @viktorstone7043 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ps, lots of native American artifacts in Montana were made out of porcelanite as it's very easy to knap and is found anywhere ancient coal seams burned (scoria hills)

      @@KatyDidRocks It literally blew my mind! I was working in a trench trying to pull out a chunk of very gemmy rainbow obsidian when I noticed a very tiny plume of smoke over the crest of a hill about 10 miles upwind. The two guys (total strangers) decided to bail when we all could smell smoke. I already had huge chunks of gold sheen and mahogany in the back of the Xterra so I was basically gilding the lily. I also had all my gear stowed. I stuck around. When I finally yanked that wee beasty out tiny flakes of ash were starting to fall. The little pencil lead thick thread of smoke was now covering an area about the width of both my hands spread out at arms length. I had to drive straight into the smoke with visibility going to about 200 feet at times which is very interesting on a goat trail at about 40 to 50 mph. BUT, I got my piece of the rainbow!

I got a flat when I was about 15 and was having trouble lining up the tire so grabbed a rock to put under to help center it.... and put it in my tool box and have had it since ( at the time I was only about 100lbs) seeing your videos reminded me of this,,

    Katy, know the feeling, I live just south of Brisbane in Queensland, to drive north to Queensland's Gem fields is about 12 hrs, to drive west to the opal fields is about 10hrs. More normal finds such as semi precious stones is normally 1 to 4 hrs depending on what your chasing. I am still new at the game so I've racked up a probably a1000km for a near nil result in the last 12 months . I am getting closer as I eliminate each location where I don't have success so eventually I will make some reasonable finds. In the mean time I watch and gather information and locations from some of the local rock hounds Keep Rockin

    Perfect primer on what to look for to find pet wood, thank you! There's a stream about an hour away from me that ACoE is going to be doing restoration on soonish and I had no idea really what I was looking for when I went a couple weekends ago, now I'm better informed. Did find some jasper and what I am fairly sure is agate with some nice water lining, gotta have a second look at others I brought home. Thankfully it's somewhere I can go, park, and walk in and not be anywhere near people so I'm still okay with social distancing. Nice at this point to have a hobby that basically requires you go where people aren't.

    Any tips to identify petrified wood from another funky looking rock???

    • @KatyDidRocks
      @KatyDidRocks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm. Petrified wood has a distinct grain pattern that looks like the wood it replaced. You often can tell the difference between petwood and a sedimentary rock by looking at the ends - petrified wood sometimes has curves in the grain that are caused by growth rings, something sedimentary stone won't have. I talk more about petrified wood here: th-cam.com/video/TwJtSVpCxc8/w-d-xo.html

      @@KatyDidRocks They should have a distinctive shape, something that goes against original horizontality. The tend to make round mounds, or cones, but can also be branched or just large mats (the mats still tend to have a kind of wavy texture that should distinguish it from non-biogenic beds). They create their structure by fixing grains that were otherwise suspended in the solution, so orientation of grains is also an indicator, but if the grains are too small, you need magnification to see that.

    That lavender rock that was in the video, right after the yellow and half
    Black rock, I'm pretty sure looked like a Native American tool, it looked chipped out in a concave channel, then Tammy threw the rock on the ground

    The hard sedimentary purple/green/grey stuff could be argilite. A meta-sedimentary rock formed in association with ophiolites. Sorry for all the big words, but we get a lot of grey/green/black/lavendar tinged stone that looks a lot like it in NZ. and YES it can contain fossils including Ammonites.

    Interesting locale! Looks like the finer sediments are being slowly removed by wet/dry cycles! That's part of desertification! 😟

      @@KatyDidRocks 14:41, the ground looks almost like it's taking on a desert pavement texture. Periods of low humidity and high winds remove finer grains and leave larger rocks. Of course, one flood will more than replace the fines, it's just a matter of if the river still floods or not.

    Haha....What a way to start a video....that excitement is incredible with such a great find. Katy, Have you been to Captain Clark Fishing access site. I think it is roughly between us both. If you haven't, I think it would be a good meeting spot if we both can find a day that works for some rock hounding.

      Agate Angler I was there on one of our recent dats with 60 mph winds! I wouldn’t worry too much about a site - we always combine trips to Billings with a Costco run. Do you have any weekdays open this week? I know you usually work...
