Close to the edge, Yours is no disgrace, Roundabout, Soundchaser, Gates of delirium. Many songs to choose from, these are just a few. These guys are extraordinary musicians.

You are one of the rare observers to note that Jon Anderson's lyrics for YES were _poetry._ Not the kind of poetry that relies on rhyme & alliteration, but rather the free-form poetry that was popular in those days, where nouns and verbs were presented in ways that seem disconnected to evoke images & feelings that the poet's wants the listener to _piece together_ to try to guess what shehe's _hinting at._ As he said it in Starship Trooper: "take what I say in a different way and it's easy to say that this is all confusion." He's knows some aren't going to recognize or appreciate what he's trying to accomplish with his words, but it's there for all who have the ears to hear. :)

That's Bill Bruford on the drums. One of the best living drummers today. Unfortunately was only with Yes until the Close to the Edge album. He went on to be the second drummer for Genesis on tour when Phil Collins took over vocals and worked with King Crimson.

    • @JJ8KK
      @JJ8KK 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Agree on Bruford's amazing inspirations on drums. Unfortunately, he felt drawn to follow an even more experimental fusion path and left YES at their peak of creativity. Thing is, _if_ Bruford's name & contributions to music are remembered decades from now, it will be for what he contributed to YES in their most stunning period of achievement. He left that to become lost in a crowd of other fusion drummers whose skills were equal to his. Still shaking my head at his wtf decision...

    • @ClueSign

@@JJ8KK Pretty sure Bill Bruford has zero regrets and you can stop concerning yourself with this. :)

    • @JJ8KK
      @JJ8KK 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ClueSign Well there's little doubt that Bill has always had a very high opinion of himself & would not be crushed to hear that an observer found his decisions back then perplexing. You can probably stop concerning yourself with this... :)

It was Chester Thompson formerly drummer with the band Weather Report who toured with Genesis as the main drummer.
Phil would periodically join him on a second drum kit during breaks from singing

Those rising organ chords with the crashing drums at the end gave me a vision. I saw people speeding in cars in reverse over speedbumps to cure stuttering. This music was so inspiring and magical - kinda like Fruit Loops on acid in a cinnamon sky.

Since you've started with Starship Trooper off of The Yes Album, I suggest you continue on with the _other_ masterpiece composition on this same album, *_Your's Is No Disgrace._* Starship Trooper was the very first YES song I heard on the radio as a senior in high school & I was completely blown away by what I was hearing. So when they came to town (Tampa, FL) I had to go see them. That's when I hear *Close To The Edge* for the first time and my decades-long worship of this band continued for the next few decades. IMO, YES is THE single greatest band of all time. You have a wonderful YES journey ahead of you, my friend :)

A good album to explore, beginning to end, is another one from Yes called 'Close To The Edge'. Start with its first song of the same name. There are only 3 songs on that whole album! Another awesome Yes concept album released shortly after the one you're doing here is 'Fragile' and one you should do a video on each song at a time, beginning to end of the album. You've already done its first song "Roundabout" (which I watched! 😁) so continue with that album for sure! One set there in particular is the double-song "We Have Heaven" and "South Side of the Sky" which should be done together as they blend in. In fact, "We Have Heaven" is only a minute and a half long and is really a warm-up to "South Side...". They did that sort of blending often, like Pink Floyd, Beatles and others. Of course, the Beatles started that trend!! Yes is one of my favorite progressive rock bands and glad to see you get into it! Hey Biz, can't wait to see you react to "Close To The Edge" as it's REAL deep! And almost 19 minutes long!! And talk about switches!!! You'll enjoy it. ✌️😎

Close to the Edge is the 19 minute song you were trying to think of. It is the title track of the album by the same name!
A lot of other reactors have been listening to Close to the Edge recently and they are all blown away! It's not a painstaking 19 minutes at all, in fact it keeps you fascinated throughout!

The general consensus is that their peak period was the three albums: The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge,
Fragile and Close to the Edge both had their classic lineup and were released in 1972, other highly recommended albums: Relayer (1974 )and Going for the One (1977)

BizMatik, Some people have an ear for Yes, and some are out of there when they see it’s longer than 3 minutes and not in 4/4. For someone as yourself who clearly hears it - you referenced “Close To The Edge.” It’s (arguably) the pinnacle of both this band, and this whole genre of “progressive rock” in general. Perhaps not for everyone - but I think it’s for you.

From The Yes Album through to Relayer...don't get too hung up on the lyrics. They are often a story that makes sense to jon Anderson...or are phonetically pleasing to him. As Rick Wakeman said - Jon is the only guy he knows who's trying to save the planet while living on another one! "Going for the One" is exceptional for its lyrics making sense - in my opinion, of course!

Great reaction! The rest of The Yes Album is a great place to start and then you could revisit Fragile (the album with Roundabout, which you already heard) and the album Close To The Edge will kill you. Anothrr album that not enough people react to is Going For The One from 1977 with a ton of different song styles including Awaken, one of their epics. Looking forward to watching you experience their catalog!

You sugar-coat nothing! Cheers on you 🍺🍺
As far as YES ... They made 3 PERFECT ALBUMS where every track is a " BANGER".
    THE YES ALBUM
    FRAGILE
    CLOSE TO THE EDGE
Don't let the length of the songs turn you away. As you said in this review "it's like 5 songs in one".
All of the tracks on these thre album are like that.
    If I may suggest ...
    From The Yes Album
    "All Good People"
    "Yours Is No Disgrace"
    From Fragile
    Roundabout
    Heart of the Sunrise
    Long Distance Runaround
    From Close to the Edge
    All Three Tracks!!!
Just start at the beginning of the album
    Take care

I put my first YES album on a turntable in 1974. I was seven years old. I had eight older brothers and sisters, and they had stacks of LP's. I cannot say what my favorite album was but I can say that if I had to grab three albums before leaving for a long trip, I would pick Close to the Edge, Fragile, and The Yes Album. I can remember all the cracks, crackles, skips, and static of Starship Troopers on the LP.

I keep wondering if Steve Howe had the pickups on his guitar sent to opposite channels. He could have handled the "dueling guitars" at the end, all by himself, just by running the lower part of his hand between the volume knobs on his guitar. Somebody with his dexterity could easily do that with the right guitar. Then it could have been managed in the studio, or even with pedal effects. A guitarist was telling me a lot of subtle effects, like not sounding the attack of the pick on the string, are done that way. Coincidentally, he was talking about Howe on another song.

If you can understand a word of this, you are quite unusual. About as much as I can make out is the repeated verse, "Speak to me of summer...." When he goes onto "Proud sons and daughters...," he's obviously talking about the people he's met on tour. Anderson likes to make the ordinary sound anything but ordinary as he drifts off into the Astral Plane.

There is still a version of this band out there and Steve Howe, the guitarist, I'd in the group. They have just released a new album, THE QUEST.

"Loneliness is a power that we possess to give or take away forever
All I know can be shown by your acceptance of the facts there shown before you
Take what I say in a different way and it's easy to say that this is all confusion
As I see a new day in me, I can also show it you and you may follow..."

Yours is No Disgrace is definitely a great next one, from this same album, and when you are ready to have your musical mind blown, try Close to the Edge. Speaking of masterful musicians, I don't see that you've done anything by the band Jethro Tull. It is time to dive in there too - try Locomotive Breath from the album "Aqualung" or the title track. in nearly anything from 1969 - 1973 you'll find the peak musicianship and arrangements. Try it you'll like it!

For an album, try Yessongs (it's a live recording). As great as Yes is in the studio, they are out of this world live.
