This is so funny. I’ve been eating Häagen-Dazs ice cream for decades and I always assumed it translated to something in Dutch. To find out it actually has no meaning is pretty funny. But it certainly stands for super high quality ice cream! ✌🏻
marcjon000 I didn’t know it was from NYC until I went to NY last year for vacation and some guy told me a whole story on how it started in Brooklyn, original location
I am Reuben and Rose’s granddaughter and I spy some incorrect info here. The original flavors were choco, vanilla, coffee, rum raisin and boysenberry. My mom, Doris added vanilla swiss almond to the mix. She was also present on the day they named it. She was 16. I never heard my grandfather say he cared for danish furniture…but he did admire Duncan Hines and that is where the name developed from, My mom and grandfather were at odds over franchising the stores. It took years of convincing and lots of family argument. I was 17 when we sold the business. I am really proud of my family and love that so many of the comments are positive about the quality of the ice cream. My grandfather had an amazing ability to know what tasted good. I would go to the factory and watch him quality control batches. If you think the pints are good you should try them straight out of the machines….heaven. RIP Poppy & My amazing grandmother Rose. How I miss them.
***** I'd rather have a little Häagen-Dazs than a bowl of sweetened air that passes for most other ice creams. It is expensive, yes. So it's a treat. It makes it even better. Unless you prize quantity over quality, of course.
***** Ha! Blue Bells, please. You can't possibly be serious. They use artificial flavors and various stabilizers all the time. Häagen-Dazs uses cream for that, which is why it's more expensive in dollars and calories. But if I want ice cream with stabilizers and artificial flavors, yeah, I'll definitely check them out, thanks.
You, all of you who've commented here-you're all morons. I put it to you that you've either never had Häagen-Dazs ice cream, or you have, and know it's obviously superior, but can't resist the urge to argue on the internet. Either way, you're idiots.
My favorites: Vanilla, Coffee and Green Tea. The story of the made-up name is amusing. But in Norwegian "hagen" means "the garden" while "das" or "dass" is a coarse slang term for an outhouse or in modern usage sometimes also a modern toilet in all the Scandinavian languages, a loan word derived from the German definite article , originally from the German expression (the small house, i.e. the outhouse). By euphemistic omission of the main word; thus, in the Scandinavian languages Häagen-Dazs would be saying "the garden outhouse" with Hungarian- and German-looking extra letters and diagraphs.
1978 working on Wall Street - came down with a bad migraine - barely made it home on the subway, but stopped at the local bodega and got my first ever pint of Haagen-Daz - it was Strawberry. Got home ate it, and along with a few aspirin, my migraine disappeared - it was the beginning of my love affair with this brand of ice cream - there is no other - well, except Ben & Jerry's 'Pistachio Pistachio'!

what a fascinating look into the origins of Haagen-Dazs! it’s cool to see how a small company can grow into a huge brand. but honestly, i’ve always wondered why they charge so much compared to other ice creams. isn’t it a bit overrated considering there are so many great alternatives out there?
Haagen daz is the best ice cream. Idc about the price. I love that I can understand all the ingredients. Currently eating it lol! My favorite flavors are strawberry and butter pecan 😋
Omg. I just fell in love with the vanilla bean Icecream. The best vanilla… just Icecream in general. I’m mind blown. The matcha Icecream is delicious too. I love this brand but I’ll only buy when it’s bogo 😅
The strawberry is in a class of its own, i can count the ingredients in it, in one hand. None comes close to it. I was had blue bell strawberry ice cream and spat right back up. I could taste the artificialness, i couldn’t even pronounce some of their ingredients. I can’t even count the ingredients it had. Only Haagan Daz for me
What a fascinating glimpse into the origins of Haagen-Dazs! I’ve always loved their ice cream, but I can’t help but feel that their branding might mislead some into thinking it’s authentically Scandinavian. It’s interesting how much marketing plays a role in our perceptions of food, don’t you think?
really enjoyed the insights in this video, it's fascinating to see how Haagen-Dazs evolved. but honestly, I think their branding strategy is a bit overrated. I mean, just because they emphasize "European" roots doesn't mean the ice cream is necessarily superior. what do you all think?
Best vanilla ice cream! Once you have tried Haagen Dazs and THEN get any other vanilla ice cream, that Other ice cream tastes so artificial with all the extra ingredients! Haagen Dazs just melts on your tongue and that rich, creamy texture...it's like a foodgasm! Lol
She's right that there is less air *in* the ice cream, but it (I guess kind of literally) depends on "how you look at it." You don't get that air *in* the ice cream, but UNDER the ice cream! A couple years ago they modified the pint size container so the "bottom" is actually higher than it appears, looking at the container's side or from above. So you are actually getting a fair amount of air when you buy that not-pint of ice cream, that appears to be a pint. Delicious ice cream, but i hate this **deceptive** packaging trick which makes it even more over-priced than if it had been an actual pint.
Vanilla Swiss almond is Bae. Next is butter pecan, cookies and cream, vanilla bean. I was stuck on caramel cone for a while and coffee. Ahhh I just love Häagen-Dazs.
