Great video! I worked on the Top Cow BotP comics as the interior artist along with writer Munier Sharrief and Alex Ross doing covers. It was my dream job because I got to draw Gatchaman AND work with Alex Ross. I grew up watching G-Force so I drew the entire series closer to the visual tone of the original anime. I also drew the BotP:Princess spinoff while Edwin David drew the BotP :Mark spinoff and BotP:Manga one shot.

Wow that’s so cool- that must’ve been a surreal gig to get. Now you’re a part of gatchaman history. Thanks for watching 🫡

I remember seeing a hot woman dressed as Princess at the Charlotte Heroes Con several years ago. Professional level costume. Her son, who looked to be about 12, was dressed as Mark, but it was clear she was WAY more into it than he.

Imagi was working on a Gatchaman CGI movie before they went out of business. Imagi is the same studio that made the CGI TMNT and Astroboy movies. This movie was going to use the title Gatchaman instead of any of the localized titles, unlike their Astroboy movie.
There was also a video game for the Wii called Tatsunoko vs. Capcom that featured Gatchaman and other Tatsunoko characters.
BotP was changed A LOT from the original version. In Gatchaman, everything took place on Earth, so there was no "Battle" between any "Planets".
I heard from a DVD bonus feature than the person that selected this show saw it in Japan but didn't understand Japanese and didn't know what was going on in the show. He reported back that the whole thing took place in America. When everyone else behind the scenes in America finally saw the show for themselves the learned that this wasn't the case at all.

Battle of the Planets was the best.
For years I would mention it and no one knew what I was talking about.
They would always think I was talking about Voltron

As a kid, BOTP was one of my jams. I didn't know until years later that it was originally "Science Ninja Team Gatchaman"! Or that the eppies were heavily edited for BOTP (and that the character 7 Zark 7 , who bared more than a passing resemblance to R2D2, was created specifically for BOTP). Thanks for the memories.

You forgot to add that in 2005, ADV Films brought the original Gatchaman series to North America with its own English dub and original Japanese storyline

@COMIC CULTURE VOYAGER The ADV version is an updated version of the Gatchaman series with three 45 minute episodes. The art style & animation is top-notch.

When i was a kid, they were G force. I really like their space ship can turn to a magnificent firebird at sooooper speed. They were like the voltes v pilots for me. Both i fondly cherish as a kid of the 80s. mabuhay!

Watched the entire series when it was on locally years and years ago. Never hated it. But the funny thing about this one is. It's so campy, probably even campier than the Batman TV show in the 70's. But it never hit the highs it should have like Gundam, Kamen rider, Hikaidar or Ultraman ❤😛🍿🍿🍿🍿

I first knew it was Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, and watched some of the anime afterwards. Didn't knew it never had a manga, nor the comics of the Americanization series is whats popular. Then found out they fought Capcom.

I definitely remember, watching the show back in the day, but to me, based on the behavior of the characters, it seem to be a great inspiration behind something that you didn’t speak about at all in this video, a little show named Voltron defender of the universe

I would suggest that Gold Key did not intend for the BotP comic to be a limited series. That wasn’t really a ‘thing’ circa 1978. It was published until sales declined to the point where it wasn’t hitting goals and was canned to make room for another book.
Why did sales decline? Who knows. The lack of new episodes of BotP (which was possible in American cartoon style of refreshing a show’s run with a limited release of new episodes into the existing 65 eps. package. There were over 40 Gatchaman eps. untouched after all) surely would be one factor. The firehose of Star Wars coattail riding was continuing and now a new Star Wars film was on the horizon, could be lots of things.
And it could just be as simple that the Gold Key comic was unsatisfying compared to the series. Even as altered as it was, the sheer energy of Gatchaman was visible in BotP. The comic didn’t capture that, instead feeling more like the insert animation of the ‘break room’ and… urg… 7-Zark-7.

I had read some of those comics, they weren't nearly as good as the show. I did like Gold Key's Scooby Doo comics though.

I was born in 69 so when battled the planets came on I was roughly 9 yearsold. I loved it. I still love it to this day. I ended up buying the blue ray collection for the gatchaman series. While I like the gatchaman seried. it's still to me does not compare to the battle of the planets as that is what I grew up with

I remember the episode where Jason went off on his own, then 7Zarkjerkface comes on and explained how Jason escaped and left the team. I just looked st the screen and thought, "Those writers just lied to us. Jason died there." I think I was 11. None of the consorship fooled us.

Battle of the Planets or Gatchaman was my favorite anime and the first I ever saw. All the other kids were on about Robotech, which was good but, Gatchaman! 😎 (though I think that if I saw it again today I might roll my eyes, but…)😂

Tatsunoko made some of my favorite characters,of which I have to this day. Casshern,Gatchaman, Tekkaman Blade. Oh wow I think the Russo's could handle it, I only liked the beginning of the live movie made a few years ago but the live action Casshern was great! Also Karas, the 40yr anniversary special was a great anime

Nice overview although a little distracting when the narrator says adaption (the process of adapting something to its environment) when he means adaptation (that which has been transformed to a new form such as book to film to manga to anime)

@@Comicculturevoyager All of the online dictionaries say that both "adaptation" and "adaption" are correct and are synonymous. I've only ever heard used "adaption" in TH-cam videos, though. IRL I've only ever heard "adaptation".

The dictionary says that they're both correct and are synonyms. I only started hearing "adaption" a few years ago from TH-camrs and thought it was a mistake as you did the first time I heard it.
