We hope there will be new remake movies and TV series (Osamu Tezuka's) 'Astro Boy / Iron Arm' produced by 'Walt Disney Animation Studio' in the far future since the 2030s or 2040s. It truly looks like and fits to Walt Disney animation.

My brother and I had that "Oh My Goddess" comic. They stupidly released the manga stories out of order (to more closely match the order things happened in the anime), and I never read beyond that issue. The "Tokuma Comics" localization of the first Street Fighter II manga released in America was handled in a unique way. Most manga translations at the time would simply mirror the image so it wouldn't be "backwards" from how US comics are. For this SF2 comic, though, they actually cut out and rearranged panels rather than flopping them, and also colorized it.

Imagi was working on a Gatchaman CGI movie before they went out of business. Imagi is the same studio that made the CGI TMNT and Astroboy movies. This movie was going to use the title Gatchaman instead of any of the localized titles, unlike their Astroboy movie. There was also a video game for the Wii called Tatsunoko vs. Capcom that featured Gatchaman and other Tatsunoko characters. BotP was changed A LOT from the original version. In Gatchaman, everything took place on Earth, so there was no "Battle" between any "Planets". I heard from a DVD bonus feature than the person that selected this show saw it in Japan but didn't understand Japanese and didn't know what was going on in the show. He reported back that the whole thing took place in America. When everyone else behind the scenes in America finally saw the show for themselves the learned that this wasn't the case at all.

The early attempts of bringing manga to American audience are so fascinating to me. I’ve taken to collecting a lot of the early floppy releases and will pick them up anytime I see them in a store. I really enjoy the having the artwork at the trim-size even when it’s flipped. Just a really cool period in comics history. Loving all your videos and always eagerly awaiting the next one.

Barefoot Gen is one of the most emotionally impactful pieces of literature I ever read and while the animated movie is just as moving (and horrific) I feel the manga version goes into much more of the grim reality anti war dissidents like Gen's family had to live under during the Imperial Regime and even after the regime falls and what's left of Gen and his family are forced to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives that their government broke. I really wish high schools in America would make at least the first volume of Barefoot Gen required reading material for 11th or 12th grade.

It was my dream job because I got to draw Gatchaman AND work with Alex Ross. I grew up watching G-Force so I drew the entire series closer to the visual tone of the original anime. I also drew the BotP:Princess spinoff while Edwin David drew the BotP :Mark spinoff and BotP:Manga one shot.

Some ideas for future videos: Nintendo comics in America, Street Fighter comics in America, other video game comics in America (MegaMan, Sonic, etc.), Robotech comics, Voltron comics, publishers like Antarctic Press, Eternity, Eclipse, Viz, Jademan (Hong Kong), Eastern Comics (South Korea), etc..

Or that the eppies were heavily edited for BOTP (and that the character 7 Zark 7 , who bared more than a passing resemblance to R2D2, was created specifically for BOTP). Thanks for the memories.

I would suggest that Gold Key did not intend for the BotP comic to be a limited series. That wasn’t really a ‘thing’ circa 1978. It was published until sales declined to the point where it wasn’t hitting goals and was canned to make room for another book. Why did sales decline? Who knows. The lack of new episodes of BotP (which was possible in American cartoon style of refreshing a show’s run with a limited release of new episodes into the existing 65 eps. package. There were over 40 Gatchaman eps. untouched after all) surely would be one factor. The firehose of Star Wars coattail riding was continuing and now a new Star Wars film was on the horizon, could be lots of things. And it could just be as simple that the Gold Key comic was unsatisfying compared to the series. Even as altered as it was, the sheer energy of Gatchaman was visible in BotP. The comic didn’t capture that, instead feeling more like the insert animation of the ‘break room’ and… urg… 7-Zark-7.
