    Why all this surprise at how it's turned out for Munster? Van Graan's appointment was a mystery to most to begin with. Campaigns over the next 2 years saw Munster take a huge step backwards with back to back derby-game losses becoming the norm in the Pro-14 as well as very poor performances against teams that would've been considered much weaker, being hammered in quarter and semi final games in Europe - Saracens/Leinster etc and the trend then continuing over the following seasons. The problems were obvious from the outset, but why were they never addressed when we could see the decline happening in real time before our eyes week after week? Van Grann's obvious inabilities were then rewarded with an extension to his contract in 2019 at which point it was very clear that we were on the backfoot with Van Graan presiding over an embarrassing losing streak to Leinster which continues to this day, huge points defeats in Europe, players performances clearly falling off, and the loss of any real fear many teams had about Thomond being a fortress. And the guy had the job for 5 years? And should any Munster supporter dare to suggest he wasn't the right fit for Munster they were immediately shut down on social media and told they "weren't part of the Munster family" and that they shouldn't speak like that about the team? I watched a supporter get dismantled online one evening on the official Munster Supporters page after a loss to - think it was Glasgow Warriors, for speaking out, and every criticism he'd made was entirely accurate and yet supporters didn't want to consider the reality of what was said. We need to wake up in Munster now, or we're facing a very worrying further decline. We've won nothing in 11 years - nothing at all - even domestically. Munster legends such as Stander have won NOTHING whatsoever with the club they gave much of their career to - that's shameful. And Van Graan presided over much of this. Everybody knew it was going to be very difficult for Munster after Anthony Foley passed away, and I feel supporters got behind Van Graan out of respect to Axel and Munster Rugby, but NO WAY should this shitshow have been allowed to continue for 5 years. And I think most Munster supporters know it however little we might want to admit it. And Christ only knows where we go from here lads. This mess should've been dealt with 3 years ago - instead we've had 5 years of rot set in. The appointment was a mistake - head in the sand and blinkered attitude at Munster though has been a much bigger one. Best of luck to him, but I certainly won't miss what he "brought" to Munster Rugby.

    VG was bad for Irish rugby ..
    As a Leinster fan I want Munster to be playing right up there with Leinster .. how good would the Irish team be then ..

    Exactly WHY, other than the reality that Ms Hurley is a rabid Munster fan, (who ended this broadcast by claiming that Munster are in the semi-finals of the URC) at a Leinster Glasgow match, did we get yet another discussion of why Munster are so abject?

    • @michaelodonnell824
      @michaelodonnell824 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Paddy le Blanc Two points.
      Firstly, I saw this awkwardly tacked on segment LIVE after watching THE quality team in the URC for the last five seasons demolish Glasgow and win their way to yet another Semi-Final. Ms Hurley is so ANTI-Leinster that, having been present to watch the shellacking of Glasgow, still believed and BROADCAST that Munster and Ulster are the Irish representatives in the URC semi-finals.
      Regarding your claim that Munster were once "European Rugby Royalty" - When? Were ANY of the CURRENT players on the team or in the squad in those distant decades?
      I will remind you that the LAST time Munster won ANYTHING was 2011. We are now in 2022. Many years ago (mid 1990s) I was working in Limerick and the locals told me of a Limerick based team which won a Trophy, long since extinct, in the 1930s. According to them, that club was still talking about it in the 1990s.
      Let me remind you that it is not only at Provincial level that Munster Rugby is struggling. In the 1990s, the teams virtually guaranteed to win the AIL were Munster based. This year, the AIL final was contested by two Leinster Teams. The defending AIL champions was yet another Leinster team.
      Munster Rugby, as a whole, has been in decline for an awful LONG time BUT, still, because RTE, TG4, and OTB INSIST on using past-it Munster Veterans and never played Munster natives, there's a NEVER ENDING STREAM of Munster analysis.
      It's a cliché, but a truism to say that Irish Rugby consists of FOUR Provinces. Only ONE of those is called "Munster".
      Moreover, even in this piece, the Munster discussion was at the expense of talking about a DIFFERENT Irish Province, one that IS in a URC Semi-Final. But NO, let's NOT talk about Ulster or Connacht or Leinster. Because according to Ms Hurley, Mr Stringer, Mr Lenihan, Mr O'Sullivan, Mr Hook, Ms Coughlan, Mr Quinlan, Mr Flannery, yourself, and the rest of the never ending stream of Munster pundits used by the Irish media, there is ONLY one Province worth talking about - the FAILURES from the South!

    I don't envy Graham Rowntree and Denis Leamy - they are literally going to have to reprogram and, rebuild the senior squad. You could just sense the raw anger and frustration in the performances of some of the Munster team. Stephen Archer looked and played like he wanted a red card! It is obvious that these players have stopped listening to their coaches - the shapelessness of the attack, the disjointed support play, a season's worth of handling mistakes in one afternoon, idiotic penalties, ill-discipline. So un-Munsterlike. And there are clear signs of exhaustion on the faces of O'Mahony, Murray, Conway - I pray that Andy Farrell does not select those 3 Munster players, Sexton, Healy, Furlong, Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose, VDF, Henderson, Cooney, Lowe, Hansen, for this Summer Tour in New Zealand. They all need to take the Summer off.

    • @michaelodonnell824
      @michaelodonnell824 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In reality, after that (and their previous display against the Leinster B/C team) if there are any Munster players at the Airport when the squad for New Zealand is flying out, they should be carrying the luggage for the squad!

      @fawltyoldboybasil.2178 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelodonnell824 My point about the upcoming tour is that the IRFU & Andy Farrell should protect a number of the older players, regardless of what Province they represent.

      In 2011, at the Rugby World Cup, the French players had lost complete confidence in Bernard La Porte and his coaching team.
      The ONLY reason THAT team didn't win the RWC was because of VERY Biased refereeing in the Final. If players are GOOD ENOUGH, coaching doesn't matter.
      This is NOT JUST a Coaching Failure.
      Moreover, FWIW, Rowntree has been head, neck and heels involved in the Munster set-up for well over a year, at this stage. Expecting different results from the same set-up is an early sign of Insanity!

    • @fawltyoldboybasil.2178
      @fawltyoldboybasil.2178 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelodonnell824 So am I to understand from your assertion that Van Graan deferred to Rowntree in how Munster played? I find that to be unlikely in light of the fact that Munster Rugby then made GR head coach. I would think it extremely unlikely, even in todays Munster Rugby setup, that the management would advocate for a continuation of the VG methods.

    Munster are a busted flush and have been for some time. Caught up with the changing of the guard for some time now. Leinster and Ulster playing a brand of rugby that excites the fans.

      Munster still had a better year than Ulster...
      ERC is the measure of Irish teams.. Ulster never perform in it. Scraped a win Vs 14 man TLS then beaten Handley at home by them. Munster drew with the them at home at least.
      Also vast majority of Munster squad is from there.. Ulster will be a Leinster seconds team soon enough. Half their squad at best actually from there.
      Not to mention Munster beat them 2/3 times. To be real munster and Ulster are in the dark from an Irish rugby perspective.
