  • How to properly break in brand new Stihl MS391 chainsaw on black locust. Wanted to show you Mike using his new Stihl chainsaw on some big wood after teasing you guys the other day when he cut some limb wood for me in the video I made a couple days ago on Wednesday. I also apologize to anyone grossed out at the end of the video but I had to show you why the camera work wasn't very good in the middle of the video.

I’ve never broken in a Stihl chainsaw, other than taking it off the shelf and full throttle work mode after. All 4 saws from the ‘90s, 2 from the 80s, still run strong. No methods of break in were used by me, suggested or not.

I was hoping that you were going to discuss how to break in a new saw, not just a saw run pretty much flat out without stopping to check chain tension (new chains do stretch, even if they are supposedly "Pre stretched" from new) they also loosen up when hot. There was no mention of oil mixture for a new saw, I'm sure I read somewhere that you should run a little more oil for the first couple tanks. Also after your saw has been under load for a while it is best to let it Idle so the fan can help cool down the motor rather than shut it off straight after being under load. Great hearing protection & eye protection. Good judgement in the first few cuts where the wood was under compression, you pulled the saw out just in time to avoid getting it stuck and then giving it a slight touch on the tension which was enough to separate it.

instruction manual says not to run the product at full throttle for the first 2 to 3 tanks of fuel mix. Why is this?
This can cause internal engine damage. STIHL recommends that you do not run your engine at wide open throttle without a load. A blower is under a load at all times, a trimmer is under a load as long as the trimmer head is in place and the line is to the correct length. A chainsaw is under a load when the bar and chain are in a cut. says stihlusa

Probably the dumbest way I've ever seen to break in a new saw. You probably already scorched the cylinder wall.
For those that don't know, always let your saw idol for about a minute before you rev the rpms.
You want to let the cylinder and the cylinder wall get to the same temperature before putting it under stress.
