This is true. I'm a former Electrical Grid operator. Our system is very vulnerable. Our substations ARE vulnerable to attack. High voltage Transformers, which are the bottlenecks of the system, have few available replacements and take a year to build. In the event of an EMP attack, estimates are 90% of our population would be dead within a year. This is serious stuff and few know anything about it.

I have been telling my husband for years that our country is at risk for both water resources and power. Dennis has echoed my fears with his documentary. Maybe his film will be a catalyst for the changes needed to fix this huge problem.
Read the book" one second after" it will really give you a further insight of what will happen if the grid goes down or an EMP attack happens.

This is a sad reality.. I'm truly grateful that I live off the grid generating my own electricity most of my food comes from my own land if situation became so bad I know I can get all my food from my own land I'm almost to where I can be totally self-sufficient I'm only 4 years into a off-grid setup and building my Homestead it'll take me about another year and I should be just about completely self-sufficient it would be hard but I could get by. As long as long as outsiders don't come and take it away.

There is a book, "One Second After" by William Forstchen. It describes what it would be like if our power grid went down because of an EMP or an x-flare from the sun. He also discusses hardening the power grid.

Fourth book is coming out this August. It's called Five Years After. The other three books were phenomenal.
He has a 2nd and 3rd book out in this series also. He's coming out with a 4th in August 2024

No electric means no internet, so you have a million in the bank, and you can't get it out. You're as poor as the guy with nothing. No credit card or debit cards will work. This problem has been discussed AT LEAST since I was in highschool 25 years ago. How we've been lucky enough to avoid an EMP thus far never ceases to amaze me. Yet the Federal government agencies don't seem to truly be concerned. WHY NOT?!?

@@jerrycny5519 those nuclear devices were not launched in the atmosphere. Launching a nuke from 30 miles up in the atmosphere will take out all of North America.
Find the EMP Taskforce Report. It describes the difference between nukes launched on earth vs in the atmosphere.

One Second After and One Year After were both good. Lights Out by David Crawford, first published in 2005, was also good. There are others, the Going Home series by A. American and the Patriot series by James Wesley Rawles among them.

I have a friend who went to high school with Mr. Quaid in Houston. He says Dennis was smart and popular throughout the school... basically an all-around good guy who was a friend to all.
Randy Quaid his brother was in 'Midnight Express' a movie beyond the levels of normal Hollywood. Also a great comedian in Chevy Chase movies. His talent was unbelievable. Great family of movie actors I don't know how that happens.

George Carlin included this societal, cultural bit back in the 90's, about human behavior when the grid goes down. Dennis may have got the idea from George. Like going back in time, get the candles ready, and hope you have friendly neighbors. Everything falls away except basic survival. Some of this was shown in "Live Free, Die Hard" with Bruce Willis.

Thank you, Mr. Quaid for your patriotism for our country! I vote for the candidate, not the party - just like you - and I've never seen so much divisiveness in my 60+ years. My spouse and I often talk about how easy it would be for some malevolent person/group to take out our power grid. It is outdated and inefficient, to say the very least. Dennis Quaid is one of those rare actors who is actually intelligent. He took on Cedars Sinai when he twin daughters were given too much medication and won. IMO he’s more handsome than any of these youngsters in the movie business. I remember seeing him in Innerspace and thinking “who is that guy? He’s got that charisma factor..”

Something like that did happen before, the Carrington event of 1859, which was an extremely intense solar storm. However, the world was not as technologically advanced at the time so the impact of it to society was not as extreme as it would be now.

Here in Michigan just last month a huge number of people lost power for many days after a blizzard! Tree branches falling on power lines and ice buildup on the lines caused it. Years ago, locall, a raccoon got into a small substation and touched the wrong thing and shorted out the power for a large area. In speaking with power company line repair people, they said to forget about cyber-attacks on our power grid, all it takes is a shotgun to take out a power station, and it was attempted twice in the Carolinas this past December. It doesn't take much to take our our power people!

I love Dennis Quaid. My favorite movie that he was in, along with Lewis Gosset Jr., is Enemy Mine. If you want to watch a movie about people forced by circumstances to lay down their bigotry and bias to live together, and then to love one another, this is the movie. It is a Science Fiction, made in the 80's, I think, but it is well worth your time. Check it out!

Im on Oxygen 24/7. Everytime we lose power I wonder if my heart will make it. I have heart failure with AFib....which can be triggered, and it has been, by lack of Oxygen. My oxygen condenser broke down during covid and couldnt get a replacement. After five months like that I wound up in the ER with a pulse ox rate of 60....they think. Because it wouldnt stop plummeting. My organs were DYING! I WAS DYING. My heart jumped out of rhythm and has been ever since. Im exhausted. People with medical conditions are terrified at this thought. Protect the grid.

I met him during the filming of "Legend" in Santa Fe, NM. He was visiting the resort I was a driver at. One of the other stars pulled me over to him and said "Dennis, if Yu ever stay here this girl will totally take care of you, she's our driver and we love her!" He was drinking a Margarita and was very sweet.

The novel “One Second After” by William Forstchen, is about this very thing. Just about everything in our lives would be impacted; and Forstchen details it all. Very scary.
