BRAVO DAN HARRIS!! Finally someone of mainstream media talking about things that really matter with human behavior. I have been unemployed since 2009 and have had tons of time on my hands and went down this road as well amongst other things. With my physical limitations, I'm re-inventing myself. Congrats, Dan you nailed it.
Try a high dose of Prozac. Ive tried every medication on the market at least 10 times and this time ive tried a super high dose of prozac (60mg day). It raises the serotonin in your brain.
After 7 years I'm just now seeing this segment. Dan Harris really went through a similar journey as me. I love his witty commentary & self awareness. I never self medicated, just got addicted to being anti social & being alone.
Focusing on the breath, noticing when you get distracted, and returning your focus to your breath, over and over again really is the basis of meditation. So I'm glad he got straight down to the basics of it. It's so simple, yet so powerful, and it doesn't cost a thing.
I never did it that way though. I have always found it much more helpful to let my mind wander off and see where it takes me. This is what gave me the most introspection on many past situations, why would you purposely suppress that?
@@notlisztening9821 because it depends on what you are meditating for (purpose). In my case I do get anxiety, panic attacks and insomnia. And I tried all kinds of meditation and nothing worked until I tried this method that Dan Harris talks about (other methods want you to use your mind: counting, breath in through nose and out through mouth in a specific rythym/counting, hold your one nostril and reverse, etc.)...those methods make my anxiety worse. By just focusing on your breath, it definately slows down my thoughts/relaxes my mind/gets rid of anxiety. If I let my mind wander, often the thoughts become very fragmented and axiety builds, insomnia ensues.
@@sanansa4567 What exactly do you mean by focus on my breath? Cus the moment I focus on it I have the manually breath and then I get anxiety! I found thinking and letting my brain run wild helps for introspective insight!

Dan Harris is one of The last GREAT 🇺🇸 American News Anchors. His voice is commanding and instills trust in the listener. Idk about you, but there are NOT MANY people associated with ANY of (the ruthlessly backstabbing betraying and traitorous) media, that I would describe as honest, respectable, or beneficial to society but Dan Harris is one. He has my respect for being straightforward and honest, transparent and willing to humble himself for the greater good.
I am dissolved in grateful tears. I think this segment on Nightline is one of the most important things that ever has been on the air. It can open more people’s eyes to what’s beyond the scientific materialist worldview than anything I've ever seen. Dan Harris did a fabulous job on this piece. Where's the second part?
You know what I find Interesting? He considers this the most embarrassing day of his life, but from an unbiased outside perspective, i see this, and see a man who is stressed and needs a break. I feel compassion for this man, because when i see vulnerability, i cant help but feel empathy. The negative voices in his head perceives that memory as incredibly embarrassing when, in reality it was just a cry out for help. and you just want to ask "are you okay?" in the simplest, most compassionate way possible... I too, am so hard on myself and internalize things as if they were 100x more embarrassing, shameful and terrible than they actually are. Your inner thoughts and mentality really do warp your reality . so if I can get that under control maybe my warped sense of anxiety induced thoughts could see the actual reality of life... that your trying your best and that's all you can do
I sit down and meditate for exactly an hour everyday, and I can say even while you're doing it your brain start to feel light and calm. It's truly amazing.
Oh I definitely know where you are coming from but an hour a day is actually almost over kill, a lot of people regularly meditate for 15 to 30 tops. It will get worst at first but after a while you notice a big difference. It's just all about consistency!
It's generally recommended to sit on the floor, cross-legged and if the floor feels uncomfortably hard, on a cushion and keeping the back straight but not stiff. I've always found this too painful so I use a chair, couch or even lie in bed. I find meditating while sleepy unpleasant as well as difficult so I only do it when wide awake. Have tried many different sensations to concentrate on eg. the feeling of the breath on the nostrils but I don't seem to ever make much progress, have always had concentration problems. At present I am experimenting with breathing in while counting to 6, holding for a second, then breathing out while counting to 8, I think this rhythm calms the mind and produces a slight trance-like state. Good luck.
Dan, you are awesome. Mad props on doing this piece. I suffer from depression and panic attacks. I can so relate to your story. Not only is this a good story, it's a great coming out story about mental health issues that our society turns a blind eye to. Next time you're in San Diego or San Francisco, drinks are on me brotha.
I agree! Thanks for shining a light on something that affects so many of us. I suffer from depression and panic attacks as well. I used to try to hide it and was pretty embarrassed about it as well. I now have found that the more I talk about it and let people in on what is happening, the less power it has over me.
great piece. There is a reason the Gurus out there seem to come out with a book every other week, I think Depak is up to 55 or 56 books now. They don't want to help, they just know that there is a world of hungry hurting people out there that have money, they are more than happy to take the money. The real solution is simple and free. It isn't easy. But it is free. The best part about Dan Harris's book is that it openly shows how the self help industry is all about helping itself to the money of those who are emotionally vulnerable and frail. 10% happier is a good book and it is honest and isn't trying to scam anybody. Great work Dan!
monjiaitaly Struck a cord brother. I so agree. In my case it was my dad. He's a clinically a narcissist and overly insecure, that my upbringing as a child was riddled with discouragement and negative vibes. Barley any encouragement to build my self esteem.
My panic attacks ended eighteen years ago when a preacher told me to repeatedly tell myself, when I felt a panic attack coming on, that " there is nothing wrong, the enemy/devil is trying to trick me". I wasn't religious at the time but I did what he told me, and after the third or fourth time, my panic attacks ended and I have never had another one. I still have some anxiety, but no more panic attacks. I really hope this helps someone.
What people need to realize is that there is no absolute cure for stress because it is a part of every day life. People say life is what you make it. The truth is its only half the equation. Things also happen in life beyond your control. Meditation can help you manage these stressors. Meditation is a product of constructive thinking which is the underlying principle of stress management and a happy life. Dan thank you for posting this video and being so open in order to help others.
I am so glad I came across this. I seem to be afflicted with panic disorder stemming from stress and past experiences, and have have experienced exactly what you did on air, except in a class presentation several times. In interviews, presentations, meetings, even in one on one situations where I am put on the spot. Whats worse is I never used to be afraid of the spot light, in fact i loved it. I also relate to the internal voice driving me to achieve, which is good, but it can be highly critical, and I find myself questioning myself and my abilities all the time. Honestly even if this meditation doesn't help much, its good to know that Im not alone, and that people can recover and be stronger.
Thank you for having the courage to put a very well know face on an otherwise very well hidden, and may i add, crippling issue. I have no doubt that addressing this the way have has given countless people the same courage to face it in their lives as well.
Dan Harris ... Two words ... Thank you !!! Your vidéos were really interresting and usefull. I was hearing all of your story and could exactly see myself. You are a grand human beeing for sharing this personal part of your life. Thank you again.
Wow thank you so much for this video. I suffer from social anxiety disorder and this has made me rethink meditation. I've always heard it was good for you but never believed it. I will now actually try this.
Thank you so much for your honesty n sharing this video. This is for me and for so many others that really needs this. Thank you for being transparent and real. I really love that! It helps me know I am not alone and I'm so happy to see how stronger and successful you are and how far you have come...Thank you 🙏
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH, DAN. I HAD BEEN SITTING HERE WONDERING WHY I WASNT "EAT UP" WITH THE PAST AND FUTURE ANYMORE. I missed my chaos and began wondering if I even cared about anything anymore. As I listened to you I began to meditate for the first time and wasn't mind snatched into a buddhist temple somewhere ! I like the results! I thank God He gave me that peace I have prayed for...how unaware and ungrateful we can be sometimes.
I remember having a HUGE panic attack when I was about 40. I thought I was having a heart attack. I couldn't control my heart beat or breathing. Hands went numb. Went to the ER only to find a baffled doctor asking me dumb questions with no diagnosis. I had to learn what happened to me after the event subsided. It was like years of stress and anxiety finally came tumbling down on my system. %99 of the medical community has no clue how to deal with mental issues.
I am a nurse and many health care workers have panic attacks while working due to stress. I experienced the same symptoms you said you had, even worse. I have left work by ambulance about 3 times over the years due to panic attacks. Just had one earlier this week while doing a medication pass. I prayed and told myself this is probably a panic attack. The panic attack subsided after about 20 minutes.
Yeah it's sad that this is still stigmatized. I had one when I was 16 and had the same symptoms and also went to the ER. The human mind is powerful beyond belief. It's hard to learn to just let go.
I had my first panic attack 27 years ago. I was in a very stressful marriage; felt lost; unsupported & it happened one day at work. Was rushed to the nearest ER. Was not able to work for 3 weeks; went back part time for 2 months; took a much needed vacation to family in my home country before I was able to go bank to work full time. I have been dealing with it since then. I am a mental health provider who let my clients know they are not alone & teach them practical ways to deal with anxiety & panic attacks. It can be debilitating, but there’s help out there. Meditation from what I understand is a powerful tool.
Thank you Dan. I’ve been suffering terribly because of the noise in my head, beating myself up over the past, stressing about the future for so long that I didn’t know there was any other way. I just watched your video and as soon as you started talking about this noise (voices sounds crazy) in your head, I knew that I had found something that would help me. I was immediately moved to tears of relief. For the first time in so long, I can see a light and I want to thank you so very much.
Thank you Dan Harris. I also started meditating while searching for job as job search can get really frustrating at times & feels like jumping from a building. I always see my mom sitting in a corner and meditating while I was a teen, during that time, I didn't know why she is sitting there quietly but now I know. It helped me in bringing awareness of my mind. I also think of compassion & kindness during meditation mode that helps me calm my mind. Thanks again for this video.
Hi, I am an educator and dealing with so much violence has me breathing heavy. My chest has been hurting me for a week. I am so stressed out that I just throw myself into my work because I feel like someone has to do something, someone has to set these kids/youths up for success so they are not a statistic. I have also realized that it is having a serious effect on my health, my performance a as first time father. My wife is supportive but i can see that my stress stresses her out. Thank you Mr. Harris and ABC news for this as I am most definitely going to try mediation.
I have been struggling with intrusive thoughts/ruminating since I can remember. I'm 40 years old, and it has never been worse! Thanks for the segment, I really need to give meditation a go.
YOu just gave your 2 week notice on GMA 8/9/21 and i commend you because i have been there and quieting the mind is the way. Congratulations and you have 1 more follower
I'm almost finished with the book now. It's so interesting seeing him and all the people he talks about in his book. After a few hundred pages I feel like I actually know the guy; a testament to a good writer I guess!
Speaking as a philosophy grad who understands panic attacks and anxiety, there's some useful information here. And to think, I figured this guy was just another mindless media twerp. Who would have known, real substance!
I appreciate this guy's earnest efforts but what Dan Harris describes here is not exactly meditation but rather a deep relaxation. Meditation is something much deeper and it happens spontaneously. I am glad he brings about people like Deepak Chopra for which the whole "yoga" or "self-help" thing became a very profitable business.
I'm late to this party but I am glad I got here. First, Dan is someone I admire greatly. I watch him every weekend on GMA and I have seen him on numerous other ABC shows. I felt shocked yet somehow honored that he would share that someone of his stature would share that he tried cocaine. I haven't tried any drugs yet but I can see how enough stress could get you there. I have done other risky unproductive things due to the "voices". I want to try something healthy. I hope that this works for me and others like me. If someone already accomplished and successful can benefit from it, maybe I will have success as well. Thank you Dan and congrats on your success!!
I have ocd and anxiety anc I went off of my Xanax which was taking 18 years for three years. I did not even recognized my own sons. I am back on xanax which my memory is back and really dizzy I’m in a wheel chair.
I suffer from severe OCD, which I have had for 49 years. I would love to know, how you managed to almost cure your illness with meditation. I try to meditate, but find it very difficult. If you receive this message, I would like to hear from you please.
Dan, GOOD for you:) I have experience w panic attacks also, and your path to spiritual teachers and then meditation is similar to mine... Racing and random thoughts... I get it. Thanks so much for posting this. NICE!!
For those that bash him, the answers come when the student is ready. I think it was a pretty cool video. Quite frankly, no one should be judging. There is no way that is better. Just because you feel that jesus is your way, is no reason to bash him. I give him mad props for takin the time to share what worked.
I found that by breathing, deeply and slowly, from my stomach I can lower my blood pressure from 120/80 to 105/65. I don't think I feel any happier but my physiology somehow responds.
+John Barry That's where you went wrong. Breathing deep & slow is Pranayam and not Meditation, it has a thought behind it and that's what you want to avoid. Simply observe the natural flow of your uncontrolled breath. Also, remember Rome wasn't built in a day so wouldn't be a calm happy mind. It's a gradual process. To learn more about this form of meditation called Anapan visit www.dhamma.org/en/about/mini_anapana. You can also learn to practice it at any Vipassana Center. It's free and anyone irrespective of belief can practice it. www.dhamma.org/en-US/index
Thanks for this. I thought about purchasing the book but I have found most often self help books go unread because I find them monotonous. And I have never heard such succinct instruction on how to meditate. I will give it a try!
I don't prescribe to ABC and their liberal-leaning views, but this guy is a stand-up fella. Really like this piece and thought it was very selfless of Dan Harris to do it. Thanks Dan.
Yoga nidra is one of the techniques I like for anxiety. And emotional support shares with people who can hold space for it without trying to fix or getting emotionally reactive or overwhelmed or scared by the intensity, who hold the vision you are resilient, capable, feeling your valid feelings, and will feel calmer after it passes. Who can gently and respectfully help you brainstorm baby steps that will help you feel more relaxed in healthy ways you consensually choose without them trying to control or dictate or force your choices and don't try to get you to shove down and bottle up or shame or fear your feelings. "Feel it to heal it," being with yourself lovingly, can deeply help. Parts work can be good for this - hearing, accepting, loving our inner parts and sensations.
Have ya'll ever went down the road he did? When you're a depressed workaholic, you generally go to a substance that will make you higher functioning. Typically, cocaine or amphetamines like adderall.
The inner voice he's referring to is years of expectations we establish in our thought process. For example, as a young adult you say in five years you'll become an IT manager that makes 100k while as hobbies learning languages and traveling around the world. The problem with this expectation is what happens if you don't exactly get this outcome? We tend to create linear expectations not recognizing the REALITY isn't linear and that expecting something so fixed will only bring you to have immense stress later in life. You focus so much on accomplishing this goal you actually slow yourself down every time you critisize yourself for an expectation you didn't fulfill. Even though you don't realize you're heading towards the destination but on a different track. Meanwhile, your friends have all graduated and have fiances or married while you're single. You don't go out because you've focused so much on yourself that your expectations buried you deep in your own depression. The best way to get out of this is to understand expectations should give you flexibility. You can revise your expectation: In the next COUPLE years (instead of five) I'll want to be in a position in IT as a manager making much more than what I am right now (instead of giving an exact amount, ie 100k). So never make such rigid expectations that it would bound to make you fail. Once this happens, you'll be living in the moment.
I was at work when I had my first panic attack. I told the HR manager and she said "nah..you're probably having a panic attack". She was right, but I didn't know that and I am still somewhat aggravated that she didn't take me seriously.
I found this interview quite fascinating as I've experienced this myself. I've dabbled in meditation a little but not with any consistency. The Dr. Mark Epstein book that Dan talks about is a good read.
James Nabors I see that this was asked a few times... The Dr. Mark Epstein book is Thoughts Without A Thinker, available here: bit.ly/drmarkepstein You can get the Dan Harris book, "10% Happier", here: bit.ly/danbharris

Thank you for bravely sharing your journey through mental health.
Breathe
" Do I describe myself as more of a baller or shot caller?" I was LOL so hard haha but Dan Harris is becoming one of my fav journalists!
Nah the part for me was when this whyte guy had thoughts of " ideas for old school rap" 💀
Thank God For an honest reporter!
You are an inspiration to others. I would bet that the majority of people have an inner voice that tells us we're not good enough.
"Breath in......what type of bird is Big Bird?....." I thought that was funny.
"Shrubbery. I like that word."
"Who decided pencils should be yellow?"
Where do gerbals run
TheMobileMan - I thought that was very funny too
Finally a video that my husband can relate to. He is now willing to try meditation!
Thank you Dan Harris!!!
I really liked this video. I have been suffering from all the sounds inside my head. I'll definitely try this easy meditation.
I hear a lot about this meditation so much. I think I should try this out because I can't sleep some nights thinking so many things.
I have been struggling with intrusive thoughts/ruminating since I can remember. I'm 40 years old, and it has never been worse! Thanks for the segment, I really need to give meditation a go.
Thanks Dan.
YOu just gave your 2 week notice on GMA 8/9/21 and i commend you because i have been there and quieting the mind is the way. Congratulations and you have 1 more follower
Took me 7 years to bump into this.
I'm almost finished with the book now. It's so interesting seeing him and all the people he talks about in his book. After a few hundred pages I feel like I actually know the guy; a testament to a good writer I guess!
I just figured out about two weeks ago that meditation is beneficial. You have confirmed this for me. I have the racing thoughts too.
Speaking as a philosophy grad who understands panic attacks and anxiety, there's some useful information here. And to think, I figured this guy was just another mindless media twerp. Who would have known, real substance!
"philosophy grad" lol enjoy your McDonald's job !
@@RobBob555 lol!
besides that,"mindless media twerp"? wow seriously? for a philosophy grad you sure are stuck up
Just finished reading his book and came straight to this video. Simply great!!!! I'm going to try meditation
"Cocaine's a hell of a drug!" :) On a serious note, glad Dan shared his story to help others.
Started Dan Harris' book and already loving it. Can relate to it a lot.
Agreed.
He gets into in more detail in his book
Really love this video. Very well put together with really helpful content. 😊👌🏾
Definitely a video worth its mega bites in gold!
....meditation or praying every day ....and the most important is when you understand your bad thoughts to change them by good ones.....
He's not exaggerating. This does work.
Meditation has almost cured my OCD and Anxiety, but sadly enough my friends think it's some religious bogus and they won't even try
awesome! how about some more details? would be an interesting read if you feel like sharing.
I have ocd and anxiety anc I went off of my Xanax which was taking 18 years for three years. I did not even recognized my own sons. I am back on xanax which my memory is back and really dizzy I’m in a wheel chair.
Would it help if when you tell your friends, you don't call it meditation but say instead "breathing exercises"?
I suffer from severe OCD, which I have had for 49 years. I would love to know, how you managed to almost cure your illness with meditation. I try to meditate, but find it very difficult. If you receive this message, I would like to hear from you please.
Perhaps you are ready for friends that share your vision.
Thank you for your bravery.
Dan, GOOD for you:) I have experience w panic attacks also, and your path to spiritual teachers and then meditation is similar to mine... Racing and random thoughts... I get it. Thanks so much for posting this. NICE!!
Thank you so much for sharing your story!
Dan I respect you very much.your smart and intelligent man. i went through similar experience in a United nations meeting in juba.I was 25.
The breath! The only tool you need to become happy enlightened and free. It will teach you everything you need to know. Peace
Absolutely wonderful story! Thanks for sharing.
looking this in 2022, I feel like I am exactly the same spot as Dan Harris! AND I LAUGHED WHEN HE SAID LIKE "DURH"
Glad i found this today. I really need it
excellent, thank you. love the presentation and honesty and groundedness. x
Minute 5:07 the guy he interviews gives EXACTLY the same advice as Dan Harris gives all of us at the end-- just different wording. Hilarious! =D
Currently reading. I do book reviews too. So I wanted to know more about dan. This video was super helpful.
+John Barry Hey John. maybe I can help.

@@nir913 he never said anything about meditation, just mentioned what worked for him. deep slow breathing works for me too sometimes.
Thanks once again Dan!
Thank you for your honesty. Somehow I knew that meditation could help, but I always think that it won't work for me.
Great segment, very informative!! Thank you❤
so he later discovered what Tolle had already told him
Damn i had to go back and rewatch. Its exactly what Tolle told him.
I loved this video, thank you =)
Thanks for this. I thought about purchasing the book but I have found most often self help books go unread because I find them monotonous. And I have never heard such succinct instruction on how to meditate. I will give it a try!
yup... breathing makes u more happier.. and when u happy everything are possible
Thank you for sharing.
I don't prescribe to ABC and their liberal-leaning views, but this guy is a stand-up fella. Really like this piece and thought it was very selfless of Dan Harris to do it. Thanks Dan.
I like this guy. He seems real.
I love the Tolle. Strange little man. But simple and VERY profound message.
Great segment. Thanks for shedding light on the "guru" jokers.
His book is amazing didn’t want it to end
Damn, I wasn't expecting cocaine lol
Yeah i was expecting alcohol or weed
Same
Have ya'll ever went down the road he did? When you're a depressed workaholic, you generally go to a substance that will make you higher functioning. Typically, cocaine or amphetamines like adderall.
Thanks for sharing an giving something we can help ourselves with.
I laughed so hard at one of his thoughts being "shrubbery" XD
clearly a monty python fan : )
I lost it at "Vanwinkle"
I was at work when I had my first panic attack. I told the HR manager and she said "nah..you're probably having a panic attack". She was right, but I didn't know that and I am still somewhat aggravated that she didn't take me seriously.
Thanks, a timely message for me.
This guy is kool. Good vid and non-biased.
good job Dan, I think you're awesome
Breath awareness meditation is what Eckhart was trying to explain to him. It brings you into the present moment.
Panic attacks are terrifying
I have your book,Dan,thanks for helping me.
Taking at least a few deep breaths truly is effective. By doing this your heart rate and blood pressure slows down.
I found this interview quite fascinating as I've experienced this myself. I've dabbled in meditation a little but not with any consistency. The Dr. Mark Epstein book that Dan talks about is a good read.
What was the Epstein book?
James Nabors I see that this was asked a few times... The Dr. Mark Epstein book is Thoughts Without A Thinker, available here: bit.ly/drmarkepstein
You can get the Dan Harris book, "10% Happier", here: bit.ly/danbharris
Thank you!
Thank you so much 💓
