  • Let’s clear something up about the Icelandic horse...
In the U.S., people often mistake Icelandic horses for cute little ponies.

Because pony is an insult for Icelanders. Ponies often have the stereotype of being only for children

Why do people act like its almost an insult to call it a pony. In fact, ponies are stronger, live longer and have more personality than horses so why is it so bad to call it pony?

People in Iceland think it’s an insult to the breed, since there build is like that of a horse but there size is like that of a pony. This breed can become 40-60 years old.

I totally agree. Ponies are terrific, strong, intelligent etc. I came to love ponies more. And the argument that is built like a horse. Duh, all ponies are too. Biologically the Icelandic still has all the characteristics of a pony, the so-called northern characteristics. 'Horses' or hot climate Equus caballus populations have the southern. Totally logical looking at their ancestors and living climates. Not an insult there, just adaptation. Beautiful for what they are.

@@FoxyTheUnicorn but ponies are proven to live longer than horses and ponies can carry more weight per kg of their body so to me calling it a horse is like calling the breed weaker. Do u get where im coming from?

I'm not sure about the negative reaction, but in Icelandic there was only the word for horse. That's why they're called horses. Maybe the don't call them ponies thing comes from the connotations that a lot of people have that ponies are for children/beginners? Even though that isn't really a thing because ponies can be just as spirited and advanced as larger horses. But you do tend to see children riding the much smaller ponies, so that could be it? Icelandics are seen as an adult riding horse.

@@claudiavanbuuren-schoester8791 your description confuses me, bc pony is simply a description of how tall it is, which this breed doesn't always stick to. They can go from from being "pony tall", to "horse tall". There are "noble" types of icelandic horses, to draft looking. All kinds. Like, tall draft horses of the north aren't ponies bc they look "northen" or "drafty". Basically, even the arabian should be called a pony simply for its small stature, but they're not.

I agree 😁… but it’s something Icelanders take a little personally 💁‍♀️. In Iceland there is only one horse type, and originally ALL horses were smaller. “Pony” is a label that most people associate with small “kid’s horses”, rather than horses that were ridden by full-grown Vikings in battle armor.

Whats wrong with ponies?? Calling the icelandics “ponies” is not a bad thing!! Ponies are much stronger than horses, are much tougher and are full of personality just like the icelandic horse 😊. Calling the breed horses kinda makes them sound weaker as most horses need special treatment and they get sick all the time
