Glad you enjoyed the Video radiator, I think it is the best truck I have driven & I have driven many different types after 55 years driving trucks. Regards Dave.
My father's first truck as an owner operator was a f89 back in 1978. He crossed europe with that truck and came back no problems at all. The only thing that had problem was rust from german and Scandinavian roads. After that he jumped to a f16 470 and he retired with that truck. He drove over 2 million kms and was a fucking beast.
l went to italy 1981 first time abroad with a volvo f 89. left hand drive what a truck, plenty of power double bunk plit screen and the old fashion nightheater.loved it,5 and half days there and back.went and done it again.done a trip to madrid in a volvo f10 240 and it never come anywhere near the f89 for pulling power, what a workhorse.
Hi and it is a joy (no pun intended) to see this great road warrior back on the road and i have also seen it about, now i was familiar with this truck when brand new and when its original owner ran to London with produce and returned to Yorkshire with General Haulage. An account was held at a public weighbridge in Goole by Chantry Farms and one night this very truck limped onto the weighbridge with the driver complaining to me that it was not pulling well, No wonder as its load of Very Wet timber maxed out the 50 ton weighbridge and only by double weighing the truck were we able to establish that all the way from London at a Gross weight in excess of 60 metric tone on 4 axles. No weigh ticket was ever issued to protect the owner operator, just our little secret, Don't build them like this any more and well done for a fine restoration.
Hi Paul, thanks for your interest & the information about it's passed. In them days it was worth the risk as there were not many ministry weighbridges about. Would not like to think what the consequences would be today getting caught with that amount of weight onboard. With the Covid restrictions the truck has not been on the Rd this year 2020 so we are looking forward to 2021. Even missed the GDSF this year, first time in 20 years. Wishing you all the best, regards Dave.
ERF were so shit, i hated them and Seddon Atkinson's. F88 is probably on a par as my favourite truck along with the Berliet. The merc 1644 was a good over nighter, sadly been 30 years since my old man used to take me for a ride along!
Years ago that truck stop had a shop called rigs and twigs at the front, one of the owners also had an all f88 which he used to take to the truck fest, I believe it caught fire and was a total lost unfortunately ...I used to park my FH across the road from there years ago...
David Joy that’s ok Dave, also can you remember the Tach Trak? It was a driver’s computerised log for hours and was first on the market in the 80s..it was designed by one of the partners I believe... he was a close family friend and I’m sure my love of wagons comes from him! His name was Ronnie Stevenson and was a true gentleman...
@@PillSharks Hi Phil, I started driving trucks in 1964, Throwaway log sheets in them days. When you ran out of time you just made out another sheet . Don't remember anyone getting done for it. Do remember the Tach Trak's, starting to get keen in them days. Regards Dave.
David Joy yes I started around 2002 and did about 6 years before I moved onto another job I’d always wanted, it’s something I always wanted to do and I would have happily carried on if this stupid driver CPC wasn’t introduced... like is said in my previous comment, my last job was working on fridge work and I used to park in the yard directly opposite the truck stop, I’d go over on a Sunday and pop the truck over to the fuel stop and fill the truck up..I would imagine now they’d probably lock you up for driving without the card in across a road!
Here in the US I owned a Volvo N10 ten wheel dump. 350 Cummins with an 8 speed low hole. A great truck but cab parts became almost impossible to obtain. I traded her in on a new Volvo/White.
Hi Prs 1, The donor truck was found in Hull, it had been in storage there after breaking down for a number of years before we acquired it. We took the cab off and a few pipes and then what was left was sold on to someone near Brough on the A66 Scotch Corner To Penrith Rd. As far as I know it is being restored. Where was it based in Ireland as we do not have any information about it at all other than it was owned by Carols Transport. ?? King regards Dave.
@@DavidJoydajcajpajpaj David Joy Hi Dave, that F88 was originally an Irish truck bought and operated by a large haulage company in Kilkenny City ,'Michael Brannigan & sons' . Their trucks were painted all blue which can clearly be seen in some of your photos under the white. It also has its original County Kilkenny registration 4899 IP (late '76 or early '77). It next owner was Donal Carroll who painted it Red /white, he was based in County Laois, this is where I remember seeing it regularly , late '70's early '80's.
@@DavidJoydajcajpajpaj You're welcome. great to see them being restored. Never got the chance to drive an F88, first Volvo my father got was an F10 in 1979.
F88 my all time favourite truck...

Avon Lodge, Avonmouth, Bristol. I am very fussy where I eat and Avon Lodge cooks some great food at a good price
86 & F88 all smoked when they were first started up, soon as they warmed up they were ok.

Hi David, great restoration. Your donor F88 was a local truck to me in Ireland many years ago. Obviously resting somewhere for long time? Robert
