The spiders seem to be more benign, and if the webs in the hidden corridors are anything to go by, are more than happy to attack the flesh hives. The fact they just ran when their suit was cut open also implies they aren't so much parasites as much as....a very organized colony.
The man doesnt seem to really be related to ants per say , they were attracted by the strange , oily , sickly interior of the house , same with flies in the retirement home , he seems to be more of an .. agent of disease ?
I never thought of Jane as being particularly wasp-y..the worms seemed their own thing. But it reminds me of a Spiderman story where a mystic hybrid giant wasp woman named Shathra was introduced. She was like a Tarantula Hawk, needing a giant spider to breed her larvae in. Spiderman finds a primal spider god temple, suckers her in a trap there, and millions of spiders eat her. The primal spider is depicted as all the scary aspects of spiders, whereas Spiderman is what a human child would portray a spider as. There was also an afterlife spider spirit, which was motherly. Its neat that the relationship is the same here.
Jon growing increasingly violent and paranoid is the most frightening part of this season and I'm dreading where this is going. At least he seemed to take Martin's explanation well. I hope this is a turning point but I'm afraid to hope.

i'm never gonna get over the confrontation at the end of this episodes, i keep coming back to it, there's so much to digest in it. jon has been on a bit of a roller coaster when it comes to martin this season. he was the first person jon voiced any suspicions about, but the extent of his investigation was going through the things he left in document storage, reading his poetry and fishing his unfinished letter out of the bin. he's stalked tim's house and dug into his work history, he's uncovered elias' bad grades in uni and his pothead phase, but he didn't do the basic research to find out if martin's 'masters in parapsychology' actually existed. i don't think he wanted to. he kept the jar of ashes martin gave him, thinking it was fake but appreciating the placebo. last episode he found out that no, martin really did persuade a member of the ecdc to let him have human remains that should probably be considered a major biohazard, because he knew it would make jon feel safer. perceiving martin's misremembered or incomplete recollection of trever herbert's incident as a lie makes jon snap so quickly because martin's care being false is the nightmare scenario. jonny sims is such a fantastic voice actor, when jon learns the truth the relief in his voice is so palpable, you can hear his smile before martin points it out. and martin. how long has martin been waiting for this shoe to drop? basically his entire adult life, apparently. he's 29 in 2016, and he was working for the institute in 2010 when trever made his statement, when he would have been 23. there's nothing to suggest that he was new to the institute at the time. he's probably always kept people in his workplace at a cheery arms-length to avoid slipping up about his age and his qualifications, and between that and his life outside of work being focused on caring for his mum, it's so easy to see how he could end up without any close friends to check up on him when he 'gets sick' for 14 days. living this lie must have been so isolating. he was able to spend months living in the archives seemingly without much change to his routine. when martin confronted jon about his skepticism at the end of season 1, jon responded by confessing his fears. i think that moment of vulnerability, their brief heart to heart, was enough to make martin want to care for jon. unfortunate then that that's when jon starts his descent into paranoia, jeopardizing his recovery from the prentiss attack by trying to come back to work early, trying to hide suspicious injuries and obviously lying about them, destroying his relationships with his co-workers with his mistrust. he kept caring for jon even though he must have dreaded him eventually finding out about his secret. he probably thought the reason jon was so angry when he called him in was because he'd found out. obviously it must have hurt to learn that jon suspected him of murder, and seeing him so angry and scared clearly rattled him, but i think this was also a relief for him. he was able to come clean, and instead of it ending his career and destroying what trust there was between he and jon, it was treated as the best news he could have given him. basically what this rambly wall of text amounts to is: i love these two disasters, and now i'm just thinking about how when martin snapped at jon, jon revealed a truth that made martin understand him better, and when jon snapped at martin, martin revealed a truth that made jon understand him better, and how this kind of parallel is exactly my shit.
If anything I'm glad that Martin didn't take Jon's outburst as unreasonable or a threat. To me his thought process read as "Aight....you've been through hell and nearly worse. I at least owe you the truth." "AND THAT IS?" "I'm a high school dropout and lied on my application." "......so you're still here and actively checking on me because you're loyal happy to have a job and trying to help. Martin I think this is the first time I've felt happy in years."
I never pinpointed why Jon yelling at Martin scared me so badly, but after multiple unfinished relistens to this podcast, I've come to the conclusion that it's because he is horrified. This is a man breaking down and spiraling into damn near insanity because not only did he just experience extreme trauma, but the archivist before him was killed. Of course he's lashing out and spiraling into paranoia, and of course he's grasping at straws. He's *horrified.*

I think Jon yelling at Martin is this first time this show has genuinely scared me. Like I've been creeped the FUCK out and very unsettled quite frequently but that was...something else.
Love the parallel of the vampire hunter relating the time his suspicions were wrong and Jon being wrong about Martin. Interesting also that we then get a web and spider lady and there is currently a web table issue with a woman that Jon is missing.
On one hand, the spiders sound very similar to the Flesh Hive. Jane Prentiss even says spiders have their own kind of music, or something to that affect, in her statement. On the other hand, in Arachnophobia and I think the episode where Jon explores the tunnels its stated the spiders are eating the worms. Jon broke open the tunnels initially trying to kill a spider, which forced the Flesh Hive to launch its attack prematurely and is probably why the staff were able to survive. Feels weird asking this, but were the spiders angling for Jane Prentiss' death?
Jon mentioned last episode that it appears as if the hive "doesn't play well with others." Between the spiders and Sasha's first meeting with Michael, it would appear as though the hive is pretty unpopular among the many eldritch abominations we see

It just wanted a warm place to sleep at night, and tricking the other homeless people to leave is more selfish than evil or malicious. After that, it used its mind tricks and then fled when Trevor confronted it, only using violence as a last resort, and even after its cover was blown it didn't attack

I think Jon yelling at Martin is this first time this show has genuinely scared me. Like I've been creeped the FUCK out and very unsettled quite frequently but that was...something else.
Love the parallel of the vampire hunter relating the time his suspicions were wrong and Jon being wrong about Martin. Interesting also that we then get a web and spider lady and there is currently a web table issue with a woman that Jon is missing.
On one hand, the spiders sound very similar to the Flesh Hive. Jane Prentiss even says spiders have their own kind of music, or something to that affect, in her statement. On the other hand, in Arachnophobia and I think the episode where Jon explores the tunnels its stated the spiders are eating the worms. Jon broke open the tunnels initially trying to kill a spider, which forced the Flesh Hive to launch its attack prematurely and is probably why the staff were able to survive. Feels weird asking this, but were the spiders angling for Jane Prentiss' death?

Jon mentioned last episode that it appears as if the hive "doesn't play well with others." Between the spiders and Sasha's first meeting with Michael, it would appear as though the hive is pretty unpopular among the many eldritch abominations we see

Honestly even having something like that happen to you once or twice can be traumatic enough to make it a triggering thing to reexperience.

@@netbathetic Now that I think about it, the spider woman is the one entity that comes to mind that DOESN'T have any malice to people. It just wanted a warm place to sleep at night, and tricking the other homeless people to leave is more selfish than evil or malicious. After that, it used its mind tricks and then fled when Trevor confronted it, only using violence as a last resort, and even after its cover was blown it didn't attack

I really like Trevor, glad he is still alive. We even saw him with a woman in the nursing home episode I think. I hope there is more with him in it.

Relistening to the series comes with the unexpected caveat of remembering why i had the hardest fucking time, liking jon. He was such an asshole to martin. He never says sorry afterwards. And the entire office KNOWS that no one else gets treated as badly as martin.
