@@edmundpower1250 Hmm... Ronnie is currently 2nd in overall title wins in snooker history, with Steve Davis being first. (There is only a 6 title differences between them, Steve on 81 and Ronnie currently on 75) - Ronnie will more than likely over take this, making him 1st place in overall snooker titles won. If that isn't domination over 30 years I don't know what is.
Ronnie's game since hasn't changed all that much since, still frenetic pace when in full flow with touch of flamboyance too. Just goes to show his method of how to play the game has remained as the standard for 30 years. Pure genius.

@@mrcakey5856 um back then he did... look up the match after Alain Robidoux, where, Ronnie played left handed and beat Ebdon. The guy was touched by god...lol. all his 147's but better was the 146. What a pure 'Ronnie' moment.
His pace isn’t frenetic, it’s perfect. When he’s on a break his timing and rhythm allow him to get in the zone. It’s important the referee is quick as well otherwise it makes Ronnie stop in his tracks.
When he’s on it he plays snooker as well as it’s possible to be played.
Safety game has grown to amongst the best though, and doesn't seem as obsessed with getting 147s. Been there, done that..
@bradparker6156 yeah that's the thing with Ronnie, he can mix it with the best of this generation and is the exception to the case where he's a jack of all trades of the game and master of them all. True GOAT.
Had forgotten about that referee, Len Ganley, a fixture of snooker of that era. Was a good player himself, with a high break of 136.

A 17 yr old beating a 6 times world champion Davis is not that shocking.... when comparing a 47 yr old still ranking number 1 in the world.

It’s incredible to see how accomplished he already looked before he had even won a major title.
Fact: immediately after turning professional, Ronnie won 74 out of his first 76 qualifying matches.
Something I notice from watching these old clips is that the referees where much quicker, and overall more helpful and no nonsense. They were never in the way of the players. Ronnie could really play at the pace he was most comfortable in. I feel that nowadays they are slowing the game down more and they are more in the way of the players.
Something Ronnie himself has commented on multiple times. He will urge referees that are in the way:)
I forget this referee's name, but it's hilarious to see him panic slightly to get the ball from the rack and back on the spot before Ronnie's sets up for his next shot. Even Jimmy White never panicked them like that.

His action was so smooth even back then - I remember this game really clearly, I was the same age as RO'S and my brother said as he watched with me: "this kid will be the best snooker player that ever lived".
How strange to watch one of Ronnie's matches without hearing 'Go on Ronnie!' from the crowd😆

Fascinating seeing Steve, the greatest snooker player, facing what was to become HIM in the future. Amazing how we used to rave on about Steve's legendary metronomic accuracy - which had accounted for all types of players, hurricanes and whirlwinds - but never saw a rocket coming. Love to know what was going through his mind watching Ronnie's effortless potting and ball control (Davis was supposed to be the guvnor in that area). Davis was no fool and probably thinking this guy not only is the future but going to be the biggest thing in the game
Stephen Hendry mentioned on a interview with Steve Davis that RoS was the reason he retired so early.
Hendry only intended to win things and when RoS broke onto the scene, he knew that was over.

No things have changed mainly not giving himself such a hard time when he isn't perfect which ain't often he has records that will never be beaten the main one being the fastest 147
He was quicker and had more energy, obviously.
Steve Davis dominated the sport when it became hugely popular on tv. But, with so many boys taking up the sport, the next generation was always going to be on another level to those players from the 1980s.
Ronnie's touch in about the reds is superb, even this young . The GOAT
Steve 'Interesting' Davis was the Ronnie of his era, the young man who set the bar higher than ever before. Imagine the pressure the recently-turned pro Ronnie was under, and he still showed a glimmer of the magnificence yet to come. I think even Steve could see the new king taking shape before him.
Was he under that much pressure? You're playing against one of the greatest of all time, people don't expect you to win. All the pressure on Steve here, for me.

To me Hendry was more impressive to me than Davis, maybe it's because I grew up watching him but I think the level of competition in the 90s and early 2000s was peak snooker and Hendry rose to the top of everyone.
Interestingly these days Steve Davis is more into control voltage than controlling a cue ball. And he is about to launch a record label, I think it’s called Rack Records.
Ronnie to win it again this year? That would be something special, 30 years on. Roll on November!

I just love how fast and efficient the referees were back then. No pissing about. This match is also INCREDIBABLY enjoyable/important to watch and think back on.
Len Ganley was one of the best refs.
The golden age of snooker refereeing for sure. Now we have women that take a comparitive age to respot the balls, often due to their lack of height making it more difficult sometimes. They disrupt the flow of the players if you watch their reaction.
Sure he was great. But what fascinates me is to see the RAW version of what he is today, and to clearly see that -- as inherently great as he always was -- he has put enormous effort and discipline into fine tuning his play to the level it is now. He has clearly never rested on his laurels; he has ALWAYS reached for perfection.
I don't think Jimmy white and others would agree with you there. I've heard Jimmy mention in the past that Ronnie has lost his self-discipline. He's had months of playing badly at times. Your comment is exaggerated.

This was the moment. I was 19 watching this. I knew of Ronnie's talent. I watched Alex and Jimmy and they were my heroes. Then we knew something special was coming. It was...it was ronnie. Thanks for the memories. However...all greats start looking at their past. If they didn't...they would be greats for longer. As soon as one is aware of greatness...one is always around the corner to beat them.

In awe how top players can set up for the next shot. Second last shot where Ronnie pots the blue and sets up for the pink is a good example. Perfection!

Looking at this in retrospect, it is remarkable to see that he has the same mannerisms that he has now as he did at 17 years of age
3years before this match, in 1990 when Ronnie had 14yo, told the presentator of a show that steve was his idole, what a proud for himself , brilliant player !! 🇩🇿
The control he has on the cue ball on the last 8 remaining balls is outstanding. At that age playing that well is amazing. Snooker is no joke.

Besides having a wonderful flare for the game, there's many hrs on the table. Ronnie has stated his love and devotion to the sport on many occasions, making those numerous hrs a labour of love. The results are absolute proof!
My two favourite snooker players. Great game.
They used to carry snooker on TV in Canada back in the early 90s (TSN) and Hendry was my favourite as he was so young and dominating over the older players. I can remember the first time seeing Ronnie and thinking wow, this guy seems so confident (cocky?) and fast. I didn't like him at first, but that changed quickly.
Kirk Steven's was cocky also...there has been a few pro Canadians but not many . Hendry was a force that captured my appeal over Davis at the time as well . But Kirk's white threads were something else . Big Bill and his beers...unbelievable time's. Only 2 oversea players being World Champs . One being a Canadian.

@@Solar55 yes. They certainly have cracked down on TH-cam viewing of Snooker . Last year I bit the bullet and got a Dazn subscription which is going up to 200 annually in January. But I love watching Snooker with full games to see offense , defence and body language live . But , the frames start at 5 am Vancouver time and 2nd sessions at 11 am . Dazn gives you 6 hours to watch it . And I do .

2 different eras.
You can see the diff in Ronnie then and today. his potting is about the same, but his position today is so much more in control especially on longer cue ball runs. He fearless personality is already there to see and Davis gave hi a few opportunities and he got it done....
All the same he hit several long pots without a bobble!
When Ronnie 0sullivan is playing well he's a hard man to beat. The amount of century he's had during his career at the top is staggering. He will have a chance of winning the world snooker championship for an 8th time next year if he overcomes his rivals.

Think the poster has taken this info from Steve Davis Wiki page where it shows him as winner of four Uk ranking championships, his other two were not ranking events apparently. This is probably the posters source where of course a look at history of Uk championship will show him as six times winner of course

Just visualising myself watching this back then, on my parents’ big square TV, 18 years old, full head of hair, full of hopes and dreams, then heading to my room to listen to the latest exciting rave music. Only thing I still have are those rave compilation cassettes 😂
And going to the local snooker club trying to emulate Ronnie…but failed to get beyond 3rd ball in my case!

Alex Hurricane Higgins was the trailblazer. Jimmy Whirlwind White was the peoples champion. Ronnie Rocket O'Sullivan is the most naturally gifted player. These players, the most exciting to watch, they kept snooker alive.👍
The table looks so slow, I kept thinking the cue ball was going to go further than it did. Thought Ronnie would be the youngest world champion, but that's one record he left for Stephen.

That was a changing of the guard. Steve Davis was my first snooker idol, but the Ronnie took over and the rest is history.
There's been a few good ones, Eddie Carlton, Hurricane (Alex) Higgins etc
Steve Davis seemed to bring another level of professionalism to the game though, much like Björn Borg did for tennis
Then Ronnie came along and he took the game to the next level, the discipline he has to play the percentage shots all the time has meant that for now he's been unbeatable
Ronnie took over? was almost a decade later before he started winning the WC. You might have missed someone else out inbetween.

It's the Masters 😂, only the best, he's number 2 in world here. He won masters 4 years after this and was number 2 4 years after this plus countless other championships. He hadn't tailed off, there was a certain Steven Hendry hit the baize
By '97 Steve was number 10. He won the masters but was going out of most tournaments in the 1st and 2nd rounds. No, he was on his way out.
He was definitely on the way down by this point, only won a handful more tournaments in his career. Hendry had completely took over for the decade with White, Doherty and Parrott amongst others all more consistent by now.
I know this video is about Ronnie but first reaction on watching it was Wow I'd forgotten how silky Steve's cue action was

Didn't like Steve or Stephen much when they played. Mainly due to Jimmy and supporting him. As I've gotten older I love watching Steve play, he's also a great commenter and has great humour.

I grew up watching snooker on the BBC and Eurosport when Stephen Hendry started to become big in the later 80s.
He was just so precise. But Ronnie makes this crazy difficult game look easy from time to time.

The gulf in natural ability here is frightening. Davis, great tactician and all round snooker player, but in terms of sheer potting ability and talent Ronnie is in a totally different league.

I remember watching this seventeen year old and seeing the game of snooker go to a higher level. Here 2024 he is the forty eight year old who is becoming the snooker machine he can be. His head and his demons are all sorted! and number eight World Snooker Trophy in March will be the iceing on the cake and put the history books to rest for a while! Rock on Ronnie. Cheers to 2024.
Its crazy to think that he has actually under-performed , if his head was right he would have won a lot more earlier on ( side note - world championship always begins half way through April and ends on first bank holiday in May-not March) .
There was never a better player, not then, not now, never will there be a better player than the rocket 🚀
