As you discovered, SHINee's "Superstar" is one of their Japanese songs. So even though SHINee -- pronounced Shiny, as in shiny stars or shiny diamonds -- is a Korean group, who debuted in 2008 as a contemporary/experimental Kpop group. They are also mega popular in Japan. "Superstar" is SHINee's most recent Japanese comeback in 2021, right before their youngest member, Taemin, enlisted in the military to serve his mandatory 18+ months of public service. Early on SM Entertainment realized that if they wanted to really make it big in Japan that their artists needed to embrace the Japanese culture and they needed to be able to show their dedication to learning the language, etc. Therefore, if SM has a group or sub-unit that they want to focus on the Japanese market, they emphasis the importance of the members being fluent in Japanese and really getting to know the Japanese culture. That is why BoA, TVXQ, SHINee, EXO-CBX, and Super Junior-D&E, among others, are now fluent or proficient in Japanese. And it's one of the reasons why these groups/artists are so popular in Japan. SHINee debuted as Japanese artists in 2011 and they have Japanese versions of a majority of their songs, plus, tons of songs that are exclusively in Japanese. SHINee are one of the most popular artists in Japan. They are so popular that they are part of the mainstream music scene and most Japanese citizens don't even consider them foreign artists. They spend about 50% of their career in Japan, so they are fluent in Japanese and they have just as many Japanese albums and songs as they do Korean. Therefore, when SHINee holds a concert in Japan it's almost entirely in Japanese. They don't even need translators when they interact with the audience. SHINee are so popular as Japanese artists that they are one of the few acts that are actually asked by the Tokyo Dome concert promoters to hold another concert there. Most people have to ask to hold an event at the Tokyo Dome, but with SHINee, executives actually contact SM and ask them to please hold another event there. The Tokyo Dome is one of the largest concert venues in Japan, which holds 55,000 people, and there is an unwritten rule that in order to get permission to hold an event there you have to be able to fill it to capacity. SHINee are such big-name artists that they know they will have no problem selling out within minutes of tickets going on sale, and most likely they will have to have multiple day events because fan demand will be so high. SHINee has even held fan meeting events at the Tokyo Dome that weren't even full concerts and were still able to sell out. Which just goes to show you, how popular they really are. As SHINee's fashion designer, Key, along with help from their stylists, is often the one that designs their outfits for their MVs and concerts. He has even been given the official title of SM's director or fashion. That is why you saw him picking out clothes in "Superstar" -- which was really just him showing off some of the outfits he selected and designed for SHINee's previous MVs and concerts. Each of the things you saw the members doing in the "Superstar" MV were things that represent who they are -- Minho is one of the top idol athletes who is crazy about sports and games, so he was playing the video game and playing soccer; Onew is really into arts and crafts and baking these days, so he was shown painting the picture; Key is into fashion; and Taemin is known as the dance king, so he was playing Superstar Revolution (i.e. Dance Dance Revolution), etc. And, as always, SHINee will forever be a group of 5. Yet again, they made sure to include Jonghyun -- SHINee's main vocalist, who passed away more than 5 years ago now -- in this MV. For example, we think the 4 pillows Onew drops from the second floor were used to represent Jonghyun. One of the pillows isn't caught by the members and it lands next to them, which is thought to represent the fact that they were tossing the pillow to Jonghyun.
Wow, Taemin should be back home soon. That's fantastic, what better way to learn about your audience than learning the language and culture. Great dedication from them! Hopefully, I can go to the Tokyo Dome one day to see a show. Have you been? I understand Superstar more now, thank you. RIP Jonghyun. 😍
@@thebillboard500club No, I've never been to Japan, but SHINee has toured in the U.S. and North America in the past. Unfortunately, I was a broke College student at that time, so I could never afford to travel to where the concerts were. And now that I am an adult who could probably afford to attend, the pandemic and their military services have prevented them from holding full scale world tours for the past 5 or so years. But they are all supposed to be back come this April and we are all hoping they will be able to start touring again, so maybe I will get the chance to see them live then.
You reacted to Shinee Lucifer a couple of weeks ago. It's pronounced Shiny as in 'bright and...' Shinee is one of the greatest Kpop groups of all time and are known as the Princes of Kpop. This is a Japanese release. Shinee Taemin and Shinee Key are very popular solo artists. Taemin is widely recognized as the best dancer in Kpop and all of the Shinee members are crazy talented and accomplished. Taemin Move, Criminal, Idea and Advice are very popular and Key's Gasoline and Bad Love are too.
You liked the last SHINee (as in shiny star) song you reacted to a few weeks ago....remember "Lucifer"? Albeit that song was twelve years older than this one...lol. SHINee are legends man! They've been around since 2008 and are STILL MAKING MUSIC. This was their Japanese comeback of 2021. They also released two hits for their Korean comeback in 2021: "Don't Call Me" and "Atlantis". Now, they are getting ready for their 15 anniversary and a 2023 comeback sometime after April when Taemin gets released from his military obligations. SHINee is the reason why Kpop has evolved into what it is today. You should take a look at all the many monumental trends they started beginning at the moment of their 2008 debut with "Replay" by singing live while dancing a more synchronized and complex choreo. They transformed the industry. With SHINee you have 5 singers, 5 dancers, 5 rappers, and 5 soloists (Jonghyun is always present in spirit). They are all all-rounders. The perfect group that set the standard and became the blueprint for all those who came afterwards.
Ok you mentioned Lizzo, well Key is the member in pink suit and sweater and the one in the bandana who did a cover of Lizzo Juice and let me tell you that song embodies Key's vibe. He is the most fluent English speaker in SHINee. As a solist he has 3 all English songs in his solo discography.... 1 English song per korean album. He has said each album he will include a track or 2 in English. He is just a great soloist as all of the members. This group is one of the rarest group to have all soloists in their group. They are that talented vocally.

Hello! Thank you for reacting to Superstar! Your analysis was so interesting. I loved your explanation, they are easy to follow and made me want to learn more about music production ^^ To speak a bit more about "Superstar", it is indeed a very fun song! SHINee did a lot of fun and light music. I would say that the difference between their Korean and Japanese songs is that Korean are, in general, more "serious", whereas their Japanese are brighter. If you like bright and retro-like songs by SHINee, you can check out: "1of1" (Korean), "Married to the Music" (Korean), "DxDxD" (Japanese) and "Picasso" (Japanese). On the more "serious" side, there are "Lucifer" and "Don't Call Me". #SHINee did a lot of different sounds, so I think you can find your happiness within their music, ahah. Many well-produced hits, often with a retro-vibe! On another note, your analysis about the different parts composing a song made me think of a song released recently by one of the SHINee members, Minho. He is the rapper guy (who is also an actor). This song, called "CHASE", is an RnB song, and to me, it sounded more like a background to a narrative than a real title track (I don't know if I'm clear 😅 sorry for that). To be more precise, "Chase" is to me quite unique because it was not supposed to be a title-track but somehow became one to tell the story the artist wanted to tell. I feel like there are interesting production choices in it that makes it follow a story, told through the MV, the lyrics and the choreography. If you have time, I would be curious to watch your reaction and listen to your analysis. /Spoilers of the song that may influence your reaction if you want to do it xD/ I may add that if I ask, it is because one day I heard someone saying they would have made some editing on the last part. They said they would've add ad-libs, but I quite disagree because to me, the lack of ad-libs at the end is actually a part of the story. The artist keeps on chasing and nothing really change in the plot at the end, so it's reflected within the music. Anyway, thank you for reading me if you had the courage to 😂 I'm looking forward to your content!

well that makes sense about Key covering Lizzo. Adding tracks in English will help definitely bring SHINee to the American market.
this is a japanese release and they have a different style for those to cater to the japanese audience.
