It is a falsehood that Henry didn't show up for France. Up until recently Henry was both France's all time goalscorer and assist maker and he is still number one for goal contributions with 78 with Griezmann 2nd with 70, Platini 61, Zidane 57, Mbappe 55, Benzema 54. His return in international competition whilst not at the level of his peak Arsenal days is still very decent and in line with other top forwards of his era.
- World Cup 98 as a 20 year old, scored 3 goals as well as in the shoot out vs Italy in the QF and was 1 inch away from scoring a great goal in the 2nd round vs Paraguay. That would have made it 4 and level with R9 in 1998.
- Euro 2000, scored 3 goals, including the winner in the SF vs Portugal. His performance in the final vs Nesta, Maldini, Canavarro was great and was named man of the match in 3 of the 5 games he played including the final. He was also included in the team of the tournament.
- 2003 including Confederations Cup 2003: This is the year where France experimented. For the first time they used Henry as the focal point rather than Zidane who didn't play in the Confederations Cup and it was a huge success. Henry scored 4 goals and assisted 2, winning the tournament whilst being named man of the match in 3 out of the 5 games he played, again including the final. That season 2002-2003 Henry scored 10 goals, 5 assists in 13 games which goes to show what he could do if the team played to his strengths. France had to make a choice, to play through Zidane, who was more patient and slower build up, or to play through Henry who was more counter and fast transitions. There was no right or wrong and playing through Zidane can be fully justified considering the trophies France won in that period but goes to show that labelling Henry as a no show for France is extremely lazy.
- World Cup 2006, scored 3 goals with one in the QF against Brazil and was also named in the team of the tournament. So when you break it down, Henry had an international career that most players would give the right leg for. He was a success in 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2006, though he never grabbed a tournament by the scruff of the neck, neither have many other great players. Even Messi up until WC2022 was deemed to have "underperformed" and prior to WC 2022 he has scored 6 goals in 19 games, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo in total has 8 goals in 22 games. These are not too dissimilar to Henry's 6 goals in 17 games.
It's worth noting that Henry's winner against Brazil in 2006 was also the only time Zidane assisted for Henry in 59 games together. Anyone who disagrees with my assessment in the 2003 paragraph, well here is the proof. The two biggest stars for France simply didn't click. One solitary assist from France's greatest ever player, one of the greatest playmakers of all time to another of France's all time greats and the number 1 striker of the 2000's. It's damning and shows that they never managed to solve this issue, a bit like England never figuring out how to play Gerrard and Lampard together.
I'll end how I started, and that is to suggest that Henry didn't show up for France is not an accurate statement. Yes Henry should have done better overall considering his club dominance and his ability but a no show or a failure her certainly was not and his man of the match awards, trophies, team of tournaments inclusions and his goal contributions are a testament to that.
Henry did not show up in the World Cup at all 😂. In 2002 he sold the bag completely for France.
Half his goals were in 98 and he only scored against BUM teams that year (Saudi Arabia and South Africa). He scored a single goal beyond the group stage and it was the only one against a formidable World Cup opponent (Brazil 2006).

at only a year or so older in 98 he had 1 more goal and 3 more assists. In 19 WC appearances r9 has 15 goals and 5 assists for a total of 20 goal contributions in 19 match appearances. Henry has 17 appearances with 6 goals and 1 assist. Not even close. Ronaldo actually won a World Cup as a main figure in the squad, Henry never did that.

Eto'o in my opinion was a more versatile player than Thierry Henry. FYI, Samuel Eto'o Fils was hardly ever the main striker for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. That role fell to Patrick Mboma between 2000 and 2004 and to Pierre Achille Webo from 2005 to 2014 inclusive.
During the 2009-2010 season, he played either as a winger or defensive midfield player.
Some Africans like myself bear Thierry Henry a grudge for saying that the likes of Cameroon were not household names to play the finals of the 2003 Confederations Cup. Henry didn't change anything himself. Maybe in the Prem, but that league was the 3rd best league at best when Henry was there. The ones who changed the striker's game were over a decade before Henry. It goes back to guys like Weah and Romario in the 80s. He was just another in that line of guys to drift outside and out wide and beat players.

Before Henry, a striker’s role was to score goals, Henry showed that’s striker can play and attack from outside the box like those players before him, but that he can create almost as many goals for his team mates and this was a new thing. Weah, Romario and R9 didn’t make assists the way Henry did and he was the first who did this on a regular basis. Today we see Benzema, Messi, Suarez, Salah, all players who will score 30+ goals a season and make 15/20 assists on top of that.

If prime Henry was playing in shitty la liga in 2003-2006 with Ronaldinho as the playmaker behind, he probably would've averaged 40 goals in those years.

In terms of natural talent Anelka was above Titi. If you do your research into the 90s even in Clairefontaine Anelka was considered more of a star. Titi made better choices and was more dedicated.
Titi and Eto’o peaked in different eras so by the time they played together Titi’s Achilles had gone. I think Titi was a better overall player evidenced by his endless invention, playmaking abilities e.g. his 32⚽️/28🥾02/03 season and dominant performances whenever Arsenal won anything. Eto’o was a more ruthless 9 with seriously elite championship pedigree but, I just don’t feel he had the same invention. His football was swift, brutal and lethal but wasn’t as mesmerising.

Henry was the best player in the 00s overall. Better than zidane. Zidane better internationally but that is jus 7 games out of 37+ cup games. Henry literally had the most goals and assists the whole 00s decade.
