We live in a sound bite world with knee jerk reactions. I even read a comment that said Katie should be in prison! I urge fair minded and thoughtful people to push back on the critics and point out the missing context. I assume all these riders are studying with Katie because they want to. Let's hear from them first before we judge her. One final thought; anyone is free to walk away if they so choose and for those that are tearing Katie down, what do YOU have to offer? Pardon the expression, but "Put up or shut up."
Katie Prudent is OLD SCHOOL and needs to get with the times .Verbal abuse of kids is not on and it is very demoralizing for the kids in her clinic . !! I was shocked at how she spoke to the kids . ,And saying she would FLIP A HORSE tells me she is an animal/ horse abuser . And i bet she has done exactly that in younger days , by flipping a horse because it did not do what she wanted , not mention Give the horse a good licking .!!! Bloody hell this woman needs to retire from giving lessons to kids !!
There is NEVER a place in training where giving a horse "a good licking" is ever acceptable. Yes, there are good moments, yes she reached the top herself. But just as docking tails is now illegal in the UK, we have moved away from fear based dominance training of horses and horse sport is killing itself it it tells critics to shut up and ignore it when trainers who are stuck in the past persist in telling students that horses need to be beaten for their own good. I have a book published in the 1980's by Judy Richter, who I believe trained Katy, where she speaks about beating a horse for refusing a jump by hitting it 10-20 times as hard as you can. That is just cruel and unnecessary and the sort of thing that will get horse sport banned world wide. By telling people like me who are experienced trainers and riders albeit never riding at Grand Prix but breaking and training young horses, to put up and shut up and other bits of the clinic were good instead of accepting that their heroine has bad parts to her they are signing the death warrant for horse sport.. If the casual observer thinks an action is cruel, it is. If you wouldn't beat a dog or a cat then you shouldn't beat a horse. This is similar to the hoo ha when Mark Todd was filmed beating a nervous horse with a branch at a cross country clinic. He may have been one of the best in the world, but it was not acceptable.
