I can attest to the effect of how we wear and feel about our hair on young black girls. I’ve seen it in my own family and little girls of friends when they see my hair. The change in their sense of being enough, is something I had never considered. And if I do nothing else but know I’ve given that to 3 little girls, then I’m happy.

I can't believe you are here listening to this sister😂...
      There's a lot to say...
The number of times I've been asked to relax my hair when it shrunk by people around me is just overwhelming. I'm African, I have done a lot to change how I view my hair. From the childhood trauma to coming into the natural hair community and figuring out, sis you got 10 different textures on your head still was a challenge.
Can we save the part that twists and chunky braids are still hair styles for later coz that's a lot to process at the moment 😅
I have a friend who can braid her own hair in any style she wants... But moisturizing, deep conditioning and silk bonnets is where she draws the line. She thinks natural hair is too much 😢 in 2024 ignorance is a choice. Especially with hair care...

I had a similar situation as a young child. My mom let me stay with a family member and they put a perm in my hair around the age of 3-4. It wasn’t until 2010 where I grew out my natural hair. It’s really sad actually.

"Some of the reasons why we find natural hair difficult, in where we are looking for simpler ways, or going back to relaxers, etc. is because the concept of our natural hair is not really our own, because we are trying to make it do things that it's not naturally meant to do. If that natural texture acceptance is there... I really feel like once you accept that the texture is this, your expectations, your routine, the way you style it, the way you care for it, it's gonna change. It now becomes enjoyable, and almost like self care even. You are really unbothered by the way you are looking after your hair. I believe I have taught myself to really accept and love and embrace my texture, which is really hard to do when everything around you is saying the opposite." / COILY

The point y make about other cultures and how they struggle when hey see our hair look different from yesterday goes back to the fact that they mostly have the same type of hair… the versatility of our type of hair to look and hold different styles is something unique only to us.
They’ll never get over it because it’s not something they can comprehend. How does your hair do that?!!!

12:31 Haven’t been to a salon to do my hair in about 5 years. They forced me to blow my hair the last time I was at a salon. Didn’t have a choice as I needed my hair box braided and they couldn’t work with my hair in it’s coily state. But am glad now we have salons that handle our kind of hair. Am yet to visit one for my hairdo

Love every bit of this discusion😊, seeing how women can come together regardless of background, culture etc is what i definitely want to identify with.
I'm a Nigerian and every single day i see lots of women loosing themselves just so they can be who they're not. This is not our culture atall, my mum wore her natural hair her entire life, back in their days they were proud of their fros but these days women just want to do what social media defines as beauty.
    @Coily diaries that song;
Brighten the corner where you are
Brighten the corner where you are
Someone far from harbor you may guide across the bar
Brighten the corner where you are.
Its a hymnal in my church😄.
Ladies keep doing this, i really want to see more👍.

This was a great conversation! You ladies definitely have a great vibe. ❤
As a musician maybe I have more freedom to wear my hair however I want, but I'll show up in any style that strikes my fancy. Most of the time I keep it lowkey, but I've definitely rocked a frohawk to work a couple times!
I can definitely relate to people being surprised when I show up with a radically different style. Especially if it's in a WNG (which for me is normally just washing and going without bothering to dry or define 😅), I'll get comments asking how long it took to style my hair that way.
I think y'all should check out Seun Okimi, she's a Nigerian youtuber who grew her relaxed hair quite long, then did a big chop and went natural. She also made a short documentary on relaxer use in Nigeria.

The pressure on black women with their hair came from black men also, majority of them think and believe silk hair are better than the hair the kinky coily hair that grows on our heads are not attractive. I don’t advertise silk hair for no one, I love the hair that grows out of my head, I would I advertise your hair when you don’t like my skin complexion and my race. I thank the Lord for giving me a thick wavy hair, I learned how to care for it thanks to TH-cam University. I’m 10 years natural and very happy 🎉

If you carefully watch African films, you will notice that poor village girls have natural hair. When they move to cities and marry rich men or earn money they start using relaxers or wigs.
