I am always confused in your diys because I use the metric system which means I have to convert everything and I never really understood what a yard is. When I buy a piece of fabric I have to know the lengh and the width so a yard doesn't really help ^_^"

We don't really consider the lengths of the fabrics when purchasing them :) But if you want to know precisely how much you need to buy, carry the patterns with you and lay them on the fabric to see if they fit or not :) that's how we do it when we prefer to know the exact amount of fabric we need! There's also a metric and yard conversion system on google if that could help your sewing process :)

I believe a yard is 36 inches in width, the length depends on the fabric.
In some tutorials that ive seen that use metrics a yard is about the same as 1 meter
but then how am I supposed to know which lengh I have to buy?
