The Great Helix Delays - which ones work for me?

  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancord... I was watching Josh Scott - JHS Pedals chap talk about his favourite reverb pedals - and in that, rather unexpectedly - he selected the Line 6 Verbzilla - and in particular the "Ducking" algorithm. I also learned from this video that the chap who is responsible for Meris pedals was responsible for the legacy reverbs that are included in the Helix - so perhaps those are worth taking a second look at? Anyway, someone asked about doing a similar video with the Delays, so here it is!
I've decided to make it possible to grab both my Helix/HX Stomp bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together for £5 - www.paypal.com... - I will then email you a link to both bundles!
You can get my EXPRESSION patches in this bundle using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com...
Try my patches (60-70+) for Helix or HX Stomp in this bundle for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com...
Try my patches for Pod GO for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com...
/ johnnathancordy get my backing tracks here

only if you wanted, you could buy me a coffee!

I noticed on many of your tutorial videos, you have your camera set to auto focus, which causes your video to drift in and out of focus when your hand appears, making it difficult to read the settings on your helix screen as you’re making adjustments. You may want to consider locking the focus when using this particular staging for your videos. Just a suggestion. Really love your videos John.

Yeh - I'm really awful with a camera! The worry is that if I don't use autofocus I'll never get it in focus at all.....Need to improve at this!

@@johnnathancordy I’m a professional photographer, if you set up your shot to focus on the Helix like you normally do, if you look at the lens, there SHOULD be a switch to switch the lens to Manual focus. Flip that switch on the lens and the focus will stay on the Helix without changing (until you flip the switch on the lens back to Auto Focus mode. There will also be an option in your camera to set it to “manual focus” but I don’t know which camera you use so can’t tell you where to find that unfortunately.

Tim Pierce recommended the Line 6 DL4 years ago in a video and based on that I picked one up. My experience with that made me love Line 6's delays and reverbs. I'm glad people are pushing back on the bad rep they have.

That rep is guitar forum wankery, The Jeorge Tripps designed DL4 is a modern (mordernish I guess, as itś 20 years old) classic. I had the Keely mod and it ripped even more. The delays in the Helix are fun and adventurous.

I listen to a lot of comparison videos of popular, vintage, and boutique Effects Pedals vs Modelers, and the Helix does very well in the hands of anyone who knows how to use it well. Resulting sounds/tones are often indistinguishable between the two. Helix is quite the chameleon, and I love that about it. In my own tests, I easily replicated the tones of my vintage pedals in my HX Stomp. I think that being able to interact with a Modeler as if it were an Effects Pedal makes a big difference to the results you get. Thanks

Big Greg Howe vibe on the intro jam. So good. That fuzz tone, or whatever is going on there... you could eat it with a spoon.

Great video John - thanks. It’s always helpful to hear unfamiliar effects, in this case delays, being used so musically. That defo inspires me, and bolsters my confidence, to delve into stuff I haven’t yet played with on the Helix.

Ducking is sweet! I turn the ducking off completely and am left with a sweet delay that I can use high and low cuts within the block on.

the dog freaked me out while listening with headphones. It sounds like its behind you
Also with the helix delays I find the legacy auto swell is waaaay better than the HX one. It just works with no tweaking needed.

It seems like his delay sound owes a lot to Eric Johnson and I think pretty much every modern guitar player owes their delay sound to him. His delay and tone are so creamy and dreamy. Good job John on paying homage to Eric Johnson without coming out and saying it.

I'm an out and proud Eric Johnson fan!! th-cam.com/video/4omThyyLGVY/w-d-xo.html (there's about 40 videos I've done around the topic of Eric's tone, lines and chords)

I use MainStage... It lets me run Neural Plugs. ( Nolly , Cory ) into Helix Native. The Helix patch is only stereo fx-- mod, delay .. verb. It works quite well, and it lets you control the plugs anyway you want. ie. exp pedals ,

The VERY last one that you said you put together is the sound i've been trying to get on my Helix for so long now!!
I actually just use the Shimmer Delay from the EHX Canyon pedal instead to get this effect!
I don't want to be that guy, but what are you combining/using to get that sound!? 13:45 min

With my Helix I have been using the Simple Digital delay as I grew up playing a Boss DD3. The Helix delay seems to introduce a lot o high end shrill though when engaged. Is there a delay modeled closer to that DD3?
