Does Expensive Equipment Really Make a Difference?

  • I interview James Azli, Australian junior archery of the year about the importance of equipment, and if it is worth it to upgrade from cheap components to expensive ones, or is it just a gimmick? We discuss his scores and showcase the improvement he had when he upgraded from a $200 set of limbs to nearly $900 set of limbs.

Those kinetic honoric limbs are great. I have these limbs also these limbs look identical to the samick r3 hunting limbs which I have also. Never had a failure, pretty decent speed and relatively quiet...

I have the same limbs and love them for what they are. I needed to go down in draw weight to work on the mental side and those are excellent for the price, and they're not flashy as some cheaper limbs can be.

I didn't know there was an official WA60 round but the feeling that more expensive makes a better archery is almost a universal feeling amongst archers and most are not even decent archers based on scores. I decided two weeks ago that I'll not buy anymore of the top name arrow brands. From now on it's Skylon Paragon. I've had Easton x23 for indoors years now and I'll use those until they die. I have an elite rezult 36 and shibuya sights that I got new, the scopes were merlin gear and spot hogg rest/launcher that was second hand.

I have tried pretty much all the top arrow brands and I think the main difference is the quality control. If you build your own arrows like I do, and have the skills and equipment to check them, match weight the components and assemble them yourself, it does not matter as much. You can get a good set of arrows out of a cheaper lower grade brand. But if you are just buying pre-fletched arrows and adding tips, it's more likely to end up with some bad flying arrows from less expensive brands. At least that has been my experience. If that makes sense.

The samick r3 discovery limb gets 183 fps out of a 17 inch riser 50 lbs limbs at 28,, with a 10 grain per pound arrow..The kinetic honoric looks to be the same limbs as the samick. Not bad speeds at all out of these limbs

@@sahhull You can buy points, that hoyt bow would definately get you more points, but is spending 2000 quid worth it to the average archer.. Nope.. They know that, but its up to you to be convinced by there marketing.. I know that most archery equiptment wont buy me points, but even I know that if you handed me that hoyt vs my first oly recurve, id definately have better scores no question.. But I dont care.. I dont shoot competitions so im not looking for 10 more points on my scorecard..

@@petrokemikal you are a marketing man's dream if you believe you can buy points.
It wouldn't get you any more points than if you shot any other bow.
Quality practice, good form and coaching get you points.

@@sahhull @sahhull My first bow all in around 500 euros was a terrible bow that absolutley held me back from getting better scores.. I know because the very first day of owning my new bow my scores shot up.. Why ? Several reasons.. My cheap bows riser was twisted going up past the sight mounts, which meant my sight was in the wrong place which meant I was compensating for it being in the wrong place by having to lean my head over to line the string up with my prefered position on the riser.. Sight bushings were made of brass and suffered from loosning because of the bad bow vibration which made the arrows drop over the course of a session until I retightened them.. The grip was horrible and propireatry which meant I had to deal with it and couldnt get a more repeatable grip position grip.. Thats just to name a few so I dont type all day... So yeah... Theres all that... All of which were a non issue with my new more expensive bow.. You get what you pay for predominanently in this world.. Of course there are things that make no difference, Then again didnt this kid just say his scores went up from shooting better limbs ?

I'd love to see a comparison of a hunting bow vs target bow for 3d purposes.

For me just knowing that i'm shooting expensive equipment makes me shoot better. Probably because i'm thinking "well i have nothing to blame but myself because i've seen people win world cup stages with this equipent".
At the end of the day it doesnt really matter if it does much for my scores, it's just a hobby to me, and like any other hobby it's always fun when you get to play with all the nice shiny latest and greatest gear.

I think there is something to that though. Top manufactures have more to lose reputation wise. Plus they have the money to produce a better product - not all the time, but for the most part. It's hard for the small startup companies to compete. It's when they start to cut costs, which seems to inevitably always happen, their quality can suffer and the unwitting consumers spend more and get less. That's why it's nice, if you can afford it, to try other brands now and then. Although you do need to have some decent skills to do an accurate comparison.
