Making a MK2 E-SHAFT for The 2 ROTOR R/C Engine! - Part 1/2

  • Last year I joined two O.S Wankel Rotary engines with success (sort of). The main problem was that I didn't include the front and rear counterweights and as result, it was vibrating like crazy. I could probablly make the corresponding modifications for the counterweights on the existing e-shaft, but it had some flaws that made it inaproppriate. First of all, it wasn't hardened, meaning increased wear from the needle bearings on the lobes
(I didn't notice any actual wear with the micrometer, just burnishing of the surfaces where the they came in contact with the needle bearings). Also, the front section of the existing e-shaft was 6mm to accomondate a front 6mm needle bearing (which I could have avoided) so this time, I made it 7mm so I could use a regular front bearing as the original O.S engine does.
Regarding the material, I used 1045 steel again, which I know it's one of the lowest in carbon content, but that's what was available in my area. It can be fully hardened in water, but it's almost sure that the part will bend or crack due to being long, slender and has features on it with many stress points. That's why I wented with quenching in oil. I still don't think it's hardened enough for this job, but I'll give it a go anyway. If the previous one held fine, this one will too.

It wouldn't last long, nor will this twin rotor.
      Gunna have meltdown issues.
It needs heat transfer... oil cooling the best, but how when the rotors are not hollow and the crank is too small to accommodate a sufficiently sized hole through the middle.
      Water cooling the easiest.

Square cube law dictates that this engine has way more surface to volume area and therefore intake area to chamber volume area then the same engines scaled up to say the proportions of the 13b. This means it can flow way more air but usually also means a verry high idle.

JohnnyQ90, for hardening this steel part.. You could follow the knife hardening path. At least for high carbon steel like 1095. First perform a neutralizing of baking at 400 F for 2 hours then let air-cool in the kiln overnight. The important part is to let the part slowly cool which affects the grain structure, do not rush it. Look up the this metal melting point and then heat to a few hundred degrees under and quench in canola oil. This will make the part crazy strong but brittle. You can also bake after quenching at a few hundred degrees for a few cycles which will soften up the metal a little bit again and release internal stresses. I cant remember where i saw it but some data exists of quenching steel using different mediums such as water, motor oil, etc. Canola oil always seemed to give the best results. Hope this helps. I love watching your projects, you are a super talented machinist.

Looks promising, regarding the hardness it could have been to slow of a quench although it's a small part.
1045 gets the maximum hardness with a water or brine quench however it probably does need to be tempered back at that point.

I’m a big rotor head from way back owned a few RX7’s in my day. I’m sure at some point I bought one of the first Winkel engine that O.S. Offered for the RC market in the US. It performed well but the fuel economy suffered. And the power and fuel duration I got out of a regular reciprocating engine was just a little easier on the budget. But a great piece of engineering. I'm not sure how much that squeaking noise means chatter on this kind of lathe but you can dampen that with some rubber attached to the shaft, such as winding some rubber bands around it to make a ball of rubber on the longer end or by making a mass damper for the tool holder from castable rubber and a lump of metal as a weight. When machining brake drums and rotors the lathe has a lead weighted rubber band that wraps around the part to dampen it from chatter to get a really smooth cut. We also use a round bit instead of a pointed bit which also chatters less too.

If the rotors are 180 degrees from one another, why do you need counterweights? The single rotor version required it because the rotor was off center. With two rotors 180 degrees between them, the offset each other's weight. I think two would be perfectly balanced.

Tool post grinders are friggin awesome, it's amazing how fine a cut you can make with them in the hardest of metals, even carbide if you have the wheels for it, and the surface finishes, especially with a finer wheel and slow cut, can be mirror smooth and the accuracy limited only by the straightness of your ways. They're one of my favorite tools on a lathe, probably the equivalent of a rotary table for a mill lol.
