  • This song commemorates the Easter Rising of 1916, which ultimately resulted in the Irish Free State. I play on 5 string banjo, clawhammer style, in a aCGCD tuning.

      Thank you for your kind comment. Another tune that works well in open G tuning on banjo is Andy Irvine's version of "Longford Weaver"...perhaps I will do a video with that one too.

    Thank you so much, that is very kind of you. It is an Arthur E Smith Shelburne II Internal Resonator banjo, made sometime around 1979. It is somewhat like some of the Bacon models from the turn of the century.

    you have just done what I've being waiting yrs for, brought 2 definite but different mountain/glin (around an open fire) types of wonderful styles together, just how we know music was mastered. beautiful arrangement and singing, well done. favourite foggy dew arrangement(being biased cause I think more Cajun/bluegrass and Irish songs should be recorded) love it

I've been enjoying listening to those you mention, though Cathy Fink is new to me, so i'll take time to listen to her. In the meantime, i await your tabs and wish you well with your recovery ~ all the best Andy. Thank you!

    Tobias,
    It is tuned aCGCD: it is the same as "double C" tuning except the fifth string is tuned up a whole step/2 frets, to match the first string at the 7th fret.

    So sorry; I had surgery right about the time you emailed, I am more or less recovered now. I'd be happy to send you the tab for the piece; it is in Tabledit format, but there is a free reader. Other Irish songs that work pretty well are "Nancys Whiskey"; most of us banjo players, though, don't really emphasize singing with the banjo. The guy who played with the Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem? is worth listening too, and Pete Seeger, and Cathy Fink, are all very skilled at singing w/ banjo.

    The method of playing goes by a number of names; mostly commonly called clawhammer (after the shape of your right hand) or frailing. There are lots of instructional videos on youtube...

      +Ryan van Nood Thanks, Ryan! I will try and put the tab up at Banjo Hangout tonight. It is a bit of a trick: it is double-C tuning except with the fifth string up to A rather than G: the net tuning is aCGCD.

      +Andy Alexis Cheers! I haven't been playing much lately, but this tune inspired me to want to pick it up again. Sinead o'Connor sang it live for Connor McGregor's walkout at UFC 189, and he's fighting again for the title in two weeks, so, as a fan, it seems relevant to learn this one, too. Thanks again!

    @Gaz10t
    This probably wouldn't be a good choice to start out with: it is in a slightly odd tuning. I'd be happy to send you the tab if you send me a private note.
    One tune that works really well in open G is "Nancy's Whiskey" which I think is widely done...

    Hi Andy! Perfect version! Can you tell me what are the chords you're playing when you sing? =)

    • @AndyAlexis
      @AndyAlexis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you play 5 string banjo, the tablature is here:
      www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/music.asp?id=14718
      It is in this tuning: aDGCD, and the way I play it here it is in D minor: I often play it in Em, so add a whole step to each of these if your voice is high enough.
      Dm (It was down by the glen one Easter)
      C (morn, to the...)
      Bb (city fair rode...)
      Dm (I..there Ireland's line of marching...)
      C( men, in squadrons...)
      Bb(passed me...)
      Dm(by...no...)
      F (pipes did hum, no battle...)
      C (battle drums, did...)
      Dm (sound their loud..._
      Bb (tattoo...and the...)
      Dm (angelus bell, o'er the Liffey...
      C (swell, rang...)
      Dm (out in the foggy dew...)

    I'd be happy to send it to you. It is in an odd tuning, though. Send me a private note with your email and I'll send you the tab.

    • @AndyAlexis
      @AndyAlexis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it is on Banjo Hangout:
      www.banjohangout.org/tab/browse.asp?m=detail&v=21591
      It is in Sawmill tuning..except there is a trick: the fifth string get tunes 2 frets higher than usual: so without capo in D minor, it is Adgcd, and with a capo in E minor, Beade (I just tune the fifth string up, never had a problem with tuning it up to B).
