"I received seeds from a park...I picked the seed pods" I actually laughed! Twinsies! I actually bring my daughter as a lookout because there are so many "vigilantes" roaming around. I'm just south of you in northern NJ and find your info very helpful. I'm a dirt saver too!
Oh my goodness! Yes! I love picking seeds for free whenever I can. But you're right. You never know if someone is going to get mad or question the "crime" that we are committing. 😅 Thanks so much for your comment. Spring will be here before we know it! 🤞🏼🌷🪻
I bought a colander at the dollar store and use that to sift bulk-purchased peat moss (wear a mask if you try this - it's dusty); the larger sticks, etc that I've sifted out, I put in outdoor pots where it is less important to have a fine mix. To make my own potting/seed starting mix, I then add perlite and/or vermiculite (purchased in large bags that have lasted a long time), worm castings, organic granular fertilizer, etc as necessary.
Last year I bought potting mix at Wal Mart for $1 a big bag! I have only bought starting mix for my African Violet seeds. This fall I bought close-out potting mix for $2.50 medium bag. My garden last summer was not good only rained once and plants really don’t thrive in chlorinated water. I am mentally gearing up for winter sowing. And, I now have Buttons, she is a year old cat and was given to me because her family of 5 men were moving. Buttons and I, this summer, would walk through my yard vole hunting. And, she has caught 5 in three😢😢 months. Buttons loves to be outside during the day-hunting!
Hi there! Oh wow - you got some great bargains on your potting mix! I'm sorry to hear that your summer garden wasn't very good last year. I hope this summer is better for you. 🙏🏼 I love the name of your cat. I once had a dog named Buttons! 💗 Thanks for sharing, friend!
Most important nugget of info for me: fungus gnat eggs are often in store mixes. It helped to pour boiling water on the mix and allow it to cool b4 using.
I totally agree! I do this every time I made a new batch of seed starting mix and I've found that it really does help keep the fungus gnats at bay. 😊🦟🌸
Great video! I have done both but am going back to making my own due to cost as I’m starting so much from seed now. I really look forward to learning about caring for seedlings once they have germinated as I feel this is something that many TH-cam videos are lacking. Fertilizing seedlings is always confusing so I hope you will go into some detail about this. What to look for in a fertilizer rather than a certain brand as I’m in Canada and don’t always have access to what’s available in the US. Looking forward to more of your videos 😊
Thank you so much for your insight. I never thought about the fact that other countries / areas may not have the same fertilizer that I'm using for seedlings. I'll definitely cover that in a future video. 🙏🏼 I'm looking forward to making a lot of seedling care videos this year. 😊🌺
New to the channel enjoyed the seed starting mix conversation and looking for help to cut my garden budget spending for me has gotten out of hand, I’ve purchase mix for years only due to convenience no particular brand had good luck with Jiffy. Thank you
Hi Kim. Welcome to my channel! 💗 I really hope you learn lots of budget saving tips on gardening through my past as well as my future videos. I tell people that gardening can be fun but it doesn't have to be expensive. 😊🌺
I use coconut coir,I can get it locally cheap in amounts I can use in my greenhouse with out being overwhelmed. On another note if you are ever going across Vermont on route 11 from Springfield to Manchester close to the later stop at Bob’s/ Best diner . Could be the other way was one then the other. Anyway get the Beefalo burger, the Beefalo are raised locally in Dorset. I go that way on my way to Vermonts northeast kingdom. My friends and I go over a couple times a year just for that.
Hi John! Thanks for the tip on the Beefalo burger. It sounds yummy and I'll definitely have to check it out. In fact, my good friends who I haven't seen in years live in Manchester, VT so now I have another reason to drive out that way this Summer! 😋
@ I believe it the first restaurant you come to coming in to Manchester on right coming from Bromley ski area. Old silver dinner, had other things there never had a bad meal. One time when my niece was young we bought sheep just short of the northeast kingdom and on the way back we stopped to eat and they had a grass skiing event on the mountain and people followed us down and were taking pictures with the sheep in the back of the truck. The owner overheard them calling friends on the mountain and offered us free dessert if we would wait until the rest came to take pictures and eat. Long story short so many came he comped everything for us, said he made way more from the people stopping than our food.
Thank you Vita, last year was my first attempt at seed starting, it was very satisfying. I used Burpee organic seed starting mix….i would like to know if I can use the mix that did not have anything sprout in the cell. I saved it all in a small tote and wondered if pouring boiling water on it is enough to kill any knat eggs. It has been in my dry basement,
You're very welcome, Tammy. 💗 Great question! You can definitely reuse that seed starting mix and yes, I suggest that you pour boiling water on it to kill any possible fungus gnat eggs just to be safe. 🦟🔥😊
Hi Vita when you prick out your seedlings do you pot them up in seed starting mix or into potting soil. I'm getting ready to pick out my viola seedlings and I always go into soil but I'm not sure if that is what I should do. Thanks for all the great information!!!
Hi Gwen. Thanks so much! 💗 I do like to pot up seedlings in potting mix once the seedlings get to be a good size (say 2 inches / 5 cm in height). I make my own potting mix but you can definitely buy it also. 😊🌺
I have lots of leftover peatmoss. So I thought I'd get a big bag of perlite from Home Depot to make my own starting mix. I've never made it before. But with the leftover perlite, do you think I can add some to my garden soil,? it's very compacted.
Hi Karen! You can definitely use your leftover perlite in a number of ways. I use it in my raised beds, hanging baskets, window boxes, and container pots. If your garden soil is compacted, perlite is great for it as it will help with the compaction. 😊🌺
