  • In the north-west of the Sultanate of Oman, in the heart of the Akhdar Mountains, the Al-Ayn oasis is perched on the limestone cliffs like a small, green miracle. In this arid country, such greenery is sure to surprise anyone visiting the region. And what’s more, it has been clinging to the cliffs for nearly 4,000 years.
The town is located 3,000 metres up the mountain and enjoys mild temperatures of around 28°C, while the valley endures 40°C in the shade. Its terraces, dug into the rock, shelter large Damask rose bushes, the oasis’ emblematic crop.
The village is crisscrossed by a network of canals punctuated by deep basins. These canals are called falaj - aflaj in the plural - some of which are around 4,500 years old and are registered as a UNESCO world heritage site.
Their invention forms the basis for the agriculture of these arid plateaus. Tunnels dug into the mountain rock collect seepage water, which is diverted to tanks which then supply the aflaj. Each village is responsible for its tunnels, without government intervention, and only the wakils, water managers whose role is passed down from father to son, are responsible for ensuring they remain operational. All of this is recorded in a register to prevent conflict.
But due to climate change, water is getting rarer. Little by little, the farmers are once again banding together to counteract the dwindling of blue gold. Men like Abdullah Al-Ghafri, an engineer and professor at the University of Nizwa, are renovating wells and installing solar pumps, which more effectively preserve water sources.

Love the terracing. Making sure there is less bareground where they are growing crops is important, too. They need more plants outside the buildings to further modify the weather effects.

Urbanization has increased the need for water. Maybe someday their children will want to travel and live in safe Tower cities connected to maglev Trains. So then many different people will need to stay there for 1-3 months to take care of these beautiful oases, like after their children all desert these places. They’ll have computer instructions on what to do. We don’t want to have everyone stop caring for them. And they can’t leave until they have someone to replace them. It will be the same for many places. Of course, anyone can stay as long as they want, including these families, but in the future they might like to see the world in Trains, and it will be a cooperative worldwide system.

One of the things never discussed is how they protect those Oasis by keeping labor costs low. Look at how rough that terrain is, and how close the Date Palm trees are. There's zero way to get machinery in there to "increase" the crop size like we see in Western nations, however, while that means that manual labor is the only real way to tend the grounds.... you have to be very careful with things that will have a negative impact on the cost of labor. Drive up the costs by increasing regulations, taxes, laws, and policies that sound good... and you destroy the ability of the Oasis to function because the product cannot be sold for enough to pay for the labor. This is exactly what happened in the Western Nations. In the US, the area along the Great Lakes was once a powerhouse of manufacturing, with goods shipped all over the world. Today, it's known as "The Rust Belt" because all of those factories have been closed down. It wasn't just one thing, obviously, but when you have a whole bunch of different things converging.... your system will be killed. Everyone talks about the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, but never about the million straws that came before it and how they made it impossible for the camel to be healthy and productive.
Western Nations could do as we see in this documentary because we know they used to do it as seen here. The problem is that they've made it impossible through all the many layers of regulations, laws, social norms, etc.

If you're concerned about their freedom & place in society ,women in islam & in oman are very well respected and have the freedom they want. People are very conservative its not that the women are oppressed its just the culture & tradition that women often dont like to be on camera or gain alot of attention ,i dont know how to say this best but i think you get the point ,oman is one of the richest countries in the world & i ve been to oman many times i had male & female friends there you can see women in every corner of the big cities & towns ,this place looks like a village so its very understandable that the people are extra conservative not oppressive if thats what you're worried about ,oman is one of the safest places for women even more than places like Sweden, Norway,USA etc. ❤❤ i just wanted to say all that i know thats probably not what you were asking!!!😅
