This method is a lifesaver, I had spent nearly 2 hours of trying to pump up my rear tire with a small-ish floor pump, and I wasn't having any luck at all. I was about to go to the shop until I stumbled across this video, I seated half of the tire with my tire lever, pumped as hard as I could and BANG the other half seated like magic. If anyone is wondering whether to try it, trust me it works unlike many other tubeless installation videos. Thanks a lot to both of you.

I just had to drop a comment to tell you both that this trick saved my ass. I fit some new Rene Herse Switchback Hills on my tourer since my old SBH's had run out of life, and while the old tires went up easily and without problem, the new ones were simply too loose to inflate. CO2, my tubeless chamber pump, nothing would seat them. I tried ratchet straps, I tried soapy water, I threw another layer of tape on the wheels. No dice. I tried this trick and it took me a couple of times to get the hang of it, but once I did it went up perfectly and easily. Went to the next wheel, nailed it first try. Thanks for the extremely clear and well shot video.
To anyone having issues with this trick, if your tires' beads are super difficult to get around all the way, the critical part is ensuring that you have both sides of the bead at the valve core well seated. I was able to get by with only about 8 inches of bead on both sides of the rim and then hit it with my floor pump and it popped right on.

Thanks! I was about ready to give up and go find a friend with an air compressor. The last two sets of tires I had went on with a floor pump no tricks/no problem but this set I was just putting on would even begin to seat. Thanks to your tips I'm all setup and ready to ride again!

O.M.G.!!! I was so skeptical, AND, not wanting to have to have a compressor. I thought there was no way my 59 year-old, super-abused and arthritic CMC and thumb joints could do this. BUT, worth a try! Once I figured out to go just little bits at a time with the lever during the pre-seating, all the struggle was over! The beads on my 27.5 Maxxis seated with maybe 30 pumps on the Joe Blow. Holy Cow - life changing! THANK YOU!!!

THANK YOU!!! I was about to give up on tubeless. My Bontrager XR4 on Line 30 wheels and TLR rim strips was so tight it seemed impossible even with a flash can (all that Bontrager stuff should work great together, right? Nope). But seating the tire halfway around on both sides did the trick! Yours were the ONLY videos I saw with that "secret" tip, and I watched a lot of them. My sanity has been restored!

you should win a bike workshop public service award for this video. So helpful. I come back to it as I don’t have a compressor. ever since watching this video I always get it on without compressor. 2 additional tips: I put dishwashing liquid on tire beads, straight out of bottle-no water, and I let the tire sit in the sun for a few hours before installing, so it gets more pliable.

Excellent video--thanks! When I first set up tubeless wheels 3 years ago, I had a difficult time, even with a compressor. Today, using this trick, I set up a set of XTR-WH-M965 20 yeqr old wheels with Maxxis Iccon tubeless ready tires. Took me two tries on each wheel, but succeeded in pumping them up to 40 psi using a Topeak floor pump. Two hours later they are holding air. I will let them sit overnight, and then add some Stanès sealant in the morning. Hopefully trail riding by afternoon. Awesome!!

Such a good video! Another trick in addition to this is at first put a tube in and seat the tire. Then deflate and only unseat one side as you remove the tube. Then start your tubeless install with one side already 100% seated.

Tubeless works so well, its nice to see a guide for the average rider at home! I set my tubeless system up with tubes for a couple weeks, before my sealant arrived. After I removed the tube and added the sealant and stem, I was able to seat the bead with a floor pump first try, front and rear! Having that tube in there to help shape the tire and bead to the rim seems to have helped quite a bit! The tire lever trick looks like a great way to dodge having a tube in there for weeks! Sometimes the tire needs to get mounted immediately!

Set up tubeless tires for the first time this summer and it worked super well. I got the tire on pretty easily by keeping it in the center of the rim. Then worked ìt with my hands to get it as close to the bead as possible. Took out the valve core and pumped it up with my floor pump and it seated super well. Those big bangs are so satisfying!! I punped it up and left it for an hour and then went back into the garage and pulled the valve cores back out and injected the sealant. Then aired it up again. They are holding air beautifully.

Thanks guys. This advice saved me! I have a new set up with baggy fitting tyres and Fulcrum's weird hookless system. I wrestled for two days trying to get a seal on the beads. After watching your video, I just slid a plastic tyre lever underneath the bead and pulled it round the rim to seat the bead. Got a good seal with the rim, pumped up first time! Nice hack!

  • @jrludwig1
    @jrludwig1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This is similar to the "trick" I have found to seat tubeless tires. I actually just pinch the tire somewhere between the upper sidewall and corner bead with my fingers and pull the bead up onto the bead seat. This is much easier than using a tire lever for most tires. If the fit is really tight or you're using an insert, you might not be able to pull it up with your fingers, but for me this has worked on every tire I've installed so far. Essentially the same trick, just easier than using a tire lever if the fit is right. I spent an hour with my son and an air compressor installing a Fasttrack on a 25 mm rim. Pulling the next tire onto the bead with my fingers worked great with my cheap low volume floor pump.

OMG what a lifesaver! I have a compressor and have used it to seat tires on rims several times - no problem. I just got new rims and I could not for the life of me get the tires to seat. This video just happened to be at the top of my suggested vids list when I got on to see if I could find some help. It took me a couple of tries to get the balance between getting enough of the bean manually seated and going too far and having it slip back in the channel but I finally got enough manually seated, hit it with the compressor and got the BANG, BANG of a fully seated tire.
Thanks so much for this. I really like this channel BTW. Very down to earth and unpretentious. Well done.

I have a compressor, and I was still having a hard time getting a new Trail King tire to inflate. For me this process has always been a little bit hit and miss. Also didn't have much luck seating the tire bead on narrow DT Swiss cross country rim, as you instructed. The game changer was removing the valve core, with comperssor, the tire inflated and the bead set in the rim in a matter of seconds. I never imagined the valve core could cause so much interferance with air flow. I would also advise anyone going tubeless to buy a small compressor, these days they are relatively cheap. Cheers

Thank you thank you thank you!!! I had a really stubborn tire that I couldn’t get to pop onto the rim bead. Tried all sorts of things AND was using a high volume compressor. The tire lever bead positioning did it. I started on the opposite side of the air valve and by the time I got around and past the valve, it started to tighten up and I did the same on the other bead. Hit the air and pow, it locked in place. The trick is to make sure the bead is seated closer to the valve area and that helps build pressure and force the rest of the tire outward.

My trick that I discovered by accident is to pump a bunch of "foamy hand soap" (brand doesn't matter) between the rim and bead around the entire wheel before you start pumping. The bubbles and foamy soap create a bit more "airtight-ness" while you are pumping and you don't need to be as sensitive about where the bead is on the rim - plus it's slippery. Warning: When the bead finally seats, "POW!" - foam will fly everywhere. It's actually kinda fun. Try it - you'll be surprised.

Yup this is how I do mine.. helps lubricate to aid getting tire on and helps seal the bead. Years ago I worked at a auto tire shop, each mounting machine has a bottle of soapy water lube to lube bead and prevents tearing the bead.👍

Part 4 is truly a secret technique. Thanks for helping me get my first tubeless tire done on my nomad(2.8” DHF)

thank you so much! Also found it very useful to first install the tire with a tube, then remove tube carefully so that one side of the tire stays in the bead. then finally install the other side of the tire the way you showed us :-)

Fantastic video! Thank you so so much for taking the time to share that. It saved my next holiday as I'm moving to the tubeless tires now (although the wheels have always been tubeless-ready lol)!

I can’t thank you enough for this video. I was at my wits end trying to seat a set of gravelkings. I was getting close to giving up , buying new tires, wheels, or heck even a new bike to stop the frustration. Worked like a charm, still had to use a compressor for the initial bead but I got it done!

This video gave me the confidence to have a go and it was easy! The Specialised tyres I had went on half mounted anyway so I just had to pump them up without the valve core.

I'm now 2 for 2 using this tip. I do not have easy access to an air compressor, so thank you!!

Funny, I just put some tires on and I don't have a pump to seat the bead, so I was going to go to the gas station tomorrow and use the air compressor :) You guys always have the right video and the right time!
