- Sidney Kimble West dancing with her father, Sam West, repeated as the Professional Division Champions in the 2020 National SHAG Dance Championships. The competition is a three night event that features dancers in six divisions - Junior I, Junior II, Non-Pro, Pro, Senior and Masters.

Stayed in Myrtle Beach in February and March in the winter. Knew about the “Shag” dance in Myrtle Beach but never saw it before. THAT'S REAL DANCING!!! Not the shaking your body stuff that the younger people and teens call dancing today but it’s not.

I think it was...........back in March it was just becoming a New York/New Jersey, where I live, issue. NJ started closing down around March 14th, 15th. As I’ve said most of 2020, why didn’t other parts of the country pay attention to the East coast.

Sam west is arguably the best shagger out there today. His smoothness and articulations on the dance floor are the best I have ever seen. I truly enjoyed this routine and interpretation of Stand by Me, just a wonderful exhibition of pure talent and joy.
However, the dance seemed a bit different to me in that HE was the main highlight of the dance versus Sydney. It seemed Sydney was just a muse or placeholder for Sams's undulations on the dance floor.
I really would have enjoyed seeing more of her gliding across the dance floor than Sam. Usually, that's how it is in dancing, the man is to show off the woman, make her shine, and make himself less visible so to speak. Meaning, if the man does his job he is the rock and the support and the foundation of the dance and the woman is the flare, the sparkle, and the beauty of the dance.
Another way to look at it is the woman dances the MELODY and the man dances the HARMONY, the harmony complements the Melody in such a way as to not overwhelm the melody but enhance it. Dancing is the same way and in this case, I felt it was totally reversed roles. Not to say it was bad, just very different and unexpected, and not my personal preference.
Note: I understand he is the teacher and she is the student, but still, a good teacher always put their student first, just saying. Even Sydney's costume is such it hides her body and feet (bell bottoms) and is all in black. And Sams costume makes sure that his feet and body are clearly visible and noticed.
I've been watching a lot of these shag videos lately & they all seem to put the male in the show stopper role. So i'm thinking this is just the way the shag is suppose to be, shining the spotlight, so to speak, on the male & not the female. Also, i've noticed the women always wear a chunky heeled shoe while the men wear a heel that looks to be at least only half the heel height as the women. You cannot be as fluid in your moves in a chunkier higher heel. Are these hard & fast regulations as to heel height?
This reviewer obviously doesnt understand the male dominance that is traditional to Carolina Shag, unlike West Coast Swing in which the male showcases the female partner. Male dominance in Carolina Shag is less pronounced now, but it is still part of this dance style.
@@kevinbyrnes5381 I understand the male dominance in the Carolina Shag, my Grandfather was raised in North Carolina and this was something I grew up with. However, as a Gentleman, raised in the South, I like the idea of highlighting the Lady in the dance as well, and not stealing all the limelight myself so to speak. The Man LEADS and the Lady follows, neither is less important to the movement than the other, they have a ROLE to play. I do appreciate your comments and distinguishing the two styles. I just prefer a mixture of the two. Have a Great Day!
