Hey guys and gals! If you're interested in getting into wet shaving, I did a review on the Van Der Hagen Traditional Shave Set. It's inexpensive and pretty darn good! Go check it out! --> th-cam.com/video/tlM_kNPlPs0/w-d-xo.html

How can anybody hold much faith in a razor review from a guy who's obviously not shaved much recently?

I upgraded to this from a cheap starter gift kit DE Razor a week ago and so far using Astra SP's on it this is stunning, its so smooth and easy. Works great for my needs as I only do one pass with the grain and it gets me a nice smooth shave on that first run and I can even get right in under the nose without worry of cuts. It has a super forgiving angle to it, you can run the blade well below or above the standard 30 Degrees and not instantly cut yourself.
I have the Knurled version as I just prefer the grip and look but its the same either way and I have to say this is probably one of the best you can buy at this price point, even for Beginners its worth paying slightly more knowing you don't need to upgrade any time soon then.

That was my first razor, Worked great, once I wanted to try a more aggressive razor, without having to purchase another. I just used a shim under the blade and made it a bit more aggressive. Once I got used to that added another shim. Just take a used blade , and with scissors cut off sharp edges and use it as a shim. There are a few you Tube videos showing this. I now have several razors but The Edwin Jagger and Merkur 34C are my favorite. They could be brothers, one taller and one shorter.
They perform as well as much more expensive Razors.

I have both too. I do find that the blades align much better in the Edwin Jagger than the the Merkur. I have to fuss with the blade every time I use the 34c to get the same blade exposure on both edges. I received a Rockwell 6c the other day and I think it's my new favorite. That fact that it is adjustable via the included plates and the blades have great alignment give it the edge over both of the other two razors.

I've got several DE razors to Include two Vintage Gillette razors, the Edwin Jagger Dr 89 is easily my favorite.

CORRECTION: The Edwin Jagger DE 89 may not be brass and the actual material is debatable. The manufacturer makes no mention of the manufacturing material. My bad!

It's zamak, sometimes referred to as pot metal.

Good American razors. Pheonix artisan accoutrements and ATT. If you want to buy just 1 razor and use it for lifetime. I recommend Gillette adjustable any of them. Or from the modern ones the rockwell 6s and that's stainless steel. The adjustables specially the gillette slim adjustable are around 20$ to 60$ on eBay depending on if they are on bids and buy now. Again the conditions are one of the factors. The rockwell 6s is full stainless steel for 100$. It's a Canadian company. Hope this helps.

Ben Actually it's pot metal if impurities get into the mix and that was true 50 years ago but Zamak in its new refined state isn't pot metal ... But it's not a Gillette by any means and won't probably be around in 20 years ... But it is a much higher quality than the pot metal of yesteryear ... I've purchased a Gillette Super Speed and a Tech on eBay and love both ...

I highly doubt a Sheffield England factory would make a pot metal handle. Handles of most major brands will be something more substantial, brass and steel most commonly, thats where the weight comes from. Unless it’s high end they’ll all use pot metal heads 🤘🏻

I love Edwin Jagger Razors - John is right, you can do 2 or 3 days growth no worries - unlike supermarket scam multiblade razors that keep blocking up and giving you ingrown hairs, I prefer Feather Blades though - they are my favourites!

Personas are about the only double edge blades made in the US. A lot of the generic blades you'll find in the drugstores are made by The American Safety Razor Company, which is also owned by Persona, as are the Gem and Star brands.
Personna also sells DE blades made in Israel at the 99 cents stores...
The Gillette Silver Blue blades are my go to blades. Crisp and smooth and last me for an average of 7 excellent shaves per blade. Made in Russia.
Shark blades are pretty good too. Made in Egypt.
Dorcos, I believe, are made in Vietnam.
Good choice on the EJ DE89 John. I own several dozen safety razors and if I had to choose one, hands down, the DE89 would be the one I keep.

I've never seen a Merkur razor for less than $29 unless it was used. I have 7 of these great razors and 38 over all including this Jagger. As far as American-made razors go, I absolutely love my Parker variant. Most of the Parker line of razors are pretty damn good.

    • @jtp9805
      @jtp9805 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Rocdoc, Parker razors are made in India and are all brass. I have the Parker 24C open comb and the A1R travel razor. I first bought the travel razor and found it a little more aggressive than my Jagger DE89 and Merkur 34C, giving a closer shave with less effort. I liked it so much that I use it in my daily rotation, not just for travel. I recently bought a Muhle R41 and a Parker 24C open comb and find the Parker a little less aggressive and easier to manage than the Muhle. I do like the Muhle very much, but if I had to choose just two razors based on overall performance it would be the Parkers.

John P I used a Feather blade in a Muhle 41. Never again.

John P I absolutely love my Parker variant. It shaves like butter without the irritation. My Rockwell 6c is just as smooth no matter what blade I use. My Muhle R41 works great with a Derby blade but never, ever will I use a Feather blade with it again. Ouch! The R41 does shave awesome with a Personna Blue.

Yes, it is a great inexpensive razor. However, it comes with different handles. The cheapest one comes with the handle you see in the video. It has no nurling so it is very slippery when wet and soapy. Spend a few dollars more and buy it with an upgraded handle and you will have a winner that you will enjoy for a lifetime.

Lincoln Curry it's actually a rebranded muhle R89 made in germany. The DE89 has the same head but the DE89's chroming was done by the same company that does all the chrome work for the Rolls Royce automobile company.

I just got this razor and I have a question. It doesn’t work at all when it’s screwed tight. But then I unscrewed it a tiny bit and it shaved really well but was loose and shaky. My first safety razor so maybe it’s supposed to be like this? Help please! Wondering if I should exchange or not.
