This project has already made clamping stuff on our CNC SO MUCH EASIER! It helps us set up jigs which is great when we are making multiples of the same cut, but it also allows us to use less stock because it can clamp from the sides instead of the top. We used Rockler T-tracks and clamps and so far they've worked really well. The piece has been really secure for all cuts. We also love that it was such an easy upgrade to make. It was way less complicated than our earlier ideas of running t-slot in a grid pattern, and it's flexible enough to work for big and small pieces. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

This is the best idea ever ! I was going to put T tracks on my cnc but putting a rail every 50mm vertically but your way is so much cheaper and will work a lot better with less change of accidentally running my bit threw a t track if i cut into the waste board !! Thanks guys :D
That was our initial plan too but changed it for the exact reasons you mentioned :D have fun, its so worth the little time requited!

I totally cracked up with the vacuum noises! And that was a very nice trick to use wood spacers to keep the clamps away from the head. Jigs are awesome! Great video as always!

Question, when you were squaring up gantry, looks like you used some 3d printed blocks - did oyuake those or are they a part of the x-carve for that process?
Aww thank you! To answer your question, we used these littleetal stairatep blocks that come with the CNC to be used with the clamps - but really you can use any two things that are rigid and the same size

Great job! I made something similar a while back and discovered that on repetitive uses, sawdust was getting trapped between the spoilboard and the bracket. Creating a little relief chamfer on the bottom edge of the L bracket gives (a little) sawdust somewhere to go so that my workpiece sits flush to the bracket and spoilboard. Just a suggestion in case you run into the same problem and again, great job as always!

That’s an awesome upgrade! At first I was like wait it’s going to cut off space that could be used, but having them flush still should allow you to use the space outside the clamps! Not that I’d even do a piece that big haha
thanks! Yep since they're recessed it shouldn't take away usable space, and since they're on the far edges we shouldn't have to worry about cutting through and hitting them since usually the actual cuts will be made away from them

I am researching the X Carve. Still deciding if I really need one. I want one, but not sure I need one. You did a great job of explaining the setup for your clamps and it was great how you used the machine to modify itself. I think the giggling was a bit overboard. Also the camera work was a bit shakey at times, more use of a tripod is in order. But overall this was a very informative video. Thanks

Adding t track is a great upgrade. I didn’t think about a video, but mine was achieved by adding a waist board above. That would have blocked all of your threaded inserts though.

Great solution! I might need to do something like this with my shapeoko. Also, I just cut aluminum t track yesterday on the miter saw, and it WAS fun to watch. Ha.
Would work great on the shapeoko too! Though you might need to cut hoes for threaded inserts to do the L bracket in the same way. And omg yet aluminum is so fun to cut haha!

On my X-carve when I do through cuts I put a piece of 1/8" hardboard or plywood under the piece to save the "waste Board" I realize it is a waste board, but sucks to replace it, and keeps my x-carve in show condition!! Excellent clamp idea!
Haha we understand, would prefer not to mess up our wasteboard too much!

Love this idea, though I have a Pirahna CNC which has a smaller bed, but is all metal t-track. Need to modify your idea somewhat, but think I can make something work. Love the repeatability factor on this, since I have a project that would require 12 similar carvings. Not having to zero out in between each carve would be a big time saver especially if it becomes something I can sell to make tens of dollars on.

Buy more tools. Or fancier woods. Or send my kids to college. And while I still may use a version of what you showed, if these www.rockler.com/rockler-stop-kit-for-rockler-t-track-system will work with my tracks, they may work for the project I've got in mind (combined with the track holders you showed, though not for some other future projects. Going to look around at other possible clamping options before making a semi-final choice.
We thought about those stops you linked too because they are lower profile, but we ended up with the ones we did because they seemed to have a bit more holding force. Good luck!
Since I don't have the inserts to screw into, I may use those for the stationary sides, and the style you used from the back where I have a lot of bed space to hold the wood in place. With only a 12" wide bed I don't have enough width to use the style you chose for side to side clamping.
I've only done 2 projects so far, so it is a learning experience. Getting some wood to use as a waste board for projects where I want to go all the way through the board but don't want to ruin bits by hitting the t-tracks, which will require a whole different method of holding things down.
I know some folks have used their CNC's to cut the holes and then added threaded inserts - could be an option!
suggestion on claming - you could also use the one of the Rockler clamps at a 45 degree angle, pushing the corner opposite of the "L" into the "L". you might need to add the "corner" piece to the T-Track filling in the missing corner that was routed out.
Yeah that could work too! As long as the corner is protected somehow - might need another L bracket for the corner clamp to push against with a void removed from the cornee
This is a great idea. Very useful. We have a ShopBot with a 4'x8' bed (😍😍😍) Our table doesn't have the threaded inserts. But... I'm going to make a jig to go on top of our table to do small parts like this. Is that bad? Lol. This is an excellent solution for a current problem I was trying to solve. Thanks for sharing this.

Great improvement for the CNC, wish I'd made that mod for my machine 😞. Might want to recess the T track a tiny bit more so that there's no chance of hitting it when you cut through a piece.
That's a great idea to recess them more. I think since ours are on the edges hopefully it won't be a risk unless we're cutting something big
Just purchased an xcarve. :) You guys are fun to watch and I have found a couple useful things from you. Unfortunately, those things will cost me money. Been wanting a CNC forever but couldn't justify the bill. With these inventables, I can at least make payments, thru their creditor. Now I need to figure out where to put it, I do plane to do what you guys did with the 3d printer cart. Been thinking about that for a while now.

The t-track looks good. I think I would modify the “L”. I would counterbore the holes so the cap screw heads are flush or below. That way you can lessen the stick out on your cutter. That helps with rigidity. The more rigid your setup is the less chatter your cut will have. I hope that makes sense.
we thought about doing nylon screws so if they get cut, it won't damage the cutter. recessing would be a good idea too! Luckily it feels plenty rigid, no chatter at all

One thing to note, at 7:50 you said 'plywood has no grain.' I'm sure you know this, but it does have a grain, its just made up of layers (veneers) of wood that each have their grain running at 90 degrees to each other. This formation is what makes it so strong because whatever way you're bending the piece, you will always be bending against the grain, where it is strongest. (Whereas things like MDF or Chipboard don't have a grain and consequently they're much weaker and more susceptible to bowing etc)

You could change the wood supports to be more similar to french cleats so when the t-track clamps push into them they transfer the lateral force into downward force holding even more securely
that's a great upgrade idea!

Hey Kate and Evan, just as a comment, you should add a relay to the spindle to turn on off, is an easy piece to do. I could guide you thru the process. I had one on mine I also use the same relay to turn on off my vacuum.

Suggestion: X-Carve sells a probe for setting the bit height. I use it all of the time--it's a huge time saver once you get the hang of it.

We've definitely been experimenting with keeping more of the behind the scenes banter in the videos. Lol "bread" is something we say to each other as a replacement for the word "ready". This is a totally normal thing to do :P

Double stick paper tape works really great too. No clamps needed and you can clean cut with no tabs. :)
We haven't tried paper tape, just other types of double stick. We'll have to give it a shot some time!

What is the largest width you can place into the clamp on the left? I make flags that are 21.25 and 30 inches wide and wonder about the t track clamps getting in the way of the flags fitting?

Thanks! We really like the X-Carve (full disclosure, they do sponsor us) but we don't have any experience using Bob's CNC. We've had it for about a year now and have used it pretty heavily (both for videos and making products) and have no complaints (other than the clamps being a little slow to apply sometimes when you have to do a bunch, which is why we added t-tracks :). should get a cheap "multitool" the oscillating tool everyone calls a multitool. With it you can flush cut the tabs super cleanly, could sand with it, scrape with it. You can get a cheap one from harbor freight and i feel like it would be alot better than cutting tabs with a jigsaw.

Nice solution. I am toying with a simpler version, but haven't added t-tracks yet, as they are not readily available here (or I haven't looked hard enough....). Do you use the Chrome book to run the X-Carve as well (ie. Does it have a USB port that can run whatever the XCarve needs)?

So that means the Chromebook has USB ports, but there is no Easel driver for it? Could you use Easel Local (I think it is called)? Don't have a Chromebook, but I'm thinking about one. Looks very cool and useful.

give you simple no technical advice
because I like your video, the enthusiasm and good mood you are showing ... In this case unfortunately you can't design anything better because it is already designed the best it can be. You can save time by thinking about it. If you want use T profile with clamps put them to parallel
layout/position. 3-4-5 t-rack parallel by moving the y-axis
longer than the maximum Y range, how many depends on what "resolution" you need for small objects. This t-rack stick together with rectangular wood/mdf/plywood whatever you have at home. They must be a little higher 3-5mm and thats it.
You can get inspiration from many more expensive
,precisely designed machines. L is bullshit and there are more reasons why this is not good, you will figure out later. Or...maybe it will no longer be necessary in future, because vacuum tables will also be on hobby cnc :D
I’ve been wanting a X carve for a long time now but I’m really nervous about assembling the kit I don’t wanna spend $1800 on something I might not be able to assemble. I’m thinking about asking for one for my 15th birthday, so I’m just wondering how hard are they to assemble I’ve used CNCs before but never built one. I learn most stuff from videos so I was also wondering if the instructions for assembly was in a video. Thanks for your time
For us it took several hours to build it. There are a lot of videos out there that can help. It wasn't easy, but I think you could build it over a weekend (with taking breaks). Hope that helps!

I thiiiiiink we bought these separately, it was a while ago so I don't quite remember. We bought a thread checker to check the threads to make sure we got the same size. Sorry we don't have a link! We can recommend the thread checker we used though, we use this thing all the time: amzn.to/2G4hl8D

Hey! We use the X-Carve more, and we mainly chose it because we really like the direction of Inventables as a company (making CNC more accessible to people who don't have experience with it) so that's why we switched to the X-Carve

Hey! It's a Chromebook and we have a link to it in our video description. You can design the thing you're going to carve on the Chromebook but you can't use it to send commands to the CNC

we opted for the X-Carve over the Shapeoko because we're in a position where we're working with companies too, and we just really clicked with the Inventables folks and their goal of making this technology more accessible for people who are new to it.
