    Shogo, until I found your channel by accident I have only ever had a fleeting interest in Japan. I always found it difficult to get someone's take on the culture that isn't either incredibly Japanese (and so struggles to explain indigenous concepts to westerners) or a foreign enthusiast (and so struggles to bring the experiences to the audience without being very clearly an outsider with an outsider's perspective). I really appreciate your work Shogo, the fact that you have a life filled with tradition, obviously living as a contemporary in Japan, as well as having lived in the West. It all combines to give you the perfect blend of cultural insight to deliver your content in a unique, informative and palatable way.
    Thank you for your diligence and dedication to bridging the cultural gap for those of us who find the mysteries of your beautiful homeland intriguing and alluring. I wish you and your family a safe and happy new year, and I hope that you personally have even more success with your channel.

      I do kraft paper decorations with personalized ink designs on the paper, this way they are fully recyclable and aren't wasteful like traditional Christmas wrappings are. My mother wraps her gifts in new dish cloths that ppl can use.

    I feel that it's not a waste if you recycle the postcard. Also I would find a post card or greeting card, to be more personal than a text message.

  • @PerfectPride
    @PerfectPride 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What fun traditions! I agree with the greeting card though, although getting mail nowadays is a nice treat, it’s so much easier to just call or text and the sentiment still gets across. I wish we had nicer traditions in the US other than getting drunk and blowing off fireworks till like 2 am….

    ...wait! I’m a little confused. So when your mother took your New Years money to buy gifts for your relatives, would she say that the gifts were from you, Shogo-san, or from your entire family??🤔🤔🤔

    My late mother's style of ozoni was very simple and bland. Just mochi, mizuna greens and dried shrimp and konbu (kelp) to flavor the dashi. I still remember this: When I was in my 20s nearly 40 years ago, I had the audacity to pour shoyu in my ozoni. You should have seen the glare I got from my mother!

    In Shintoism there are no gods just kami except for the three base gods Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto (her brother), and lastly Fujin together they make the sun, moon and wind gods, and Kami are descended from them.

    Wait, let me make sure I understand this correctly. It was once a custom to visit people that were indebted to you on new years day? You mean someone I owe money to would actually come knocking on my door and wish me better luck in the new year? "Hey, Chuckles, this is Guido, open up! We know you're in there. Good luck in the new year. You still owe Don Cannoli 50 bucks."

    For gift wrapping paper, I just get some free extra paper bags (made out of 100% recycled paper) at my grocery store. Then me and my children, deconstruct, paint and decorate them. It's a fun holiday craft and my kids love personalizing each family members gift wrap.

    Regarding writing and sending a nengajyo. I think it's the same as writing a letter for someone. Doing such shows sincerety to the receiving party, it's more personalised not only because you took time to think and write the message but also your personal handwriting.
