- This one explains the 2 stage thermostat and how it is wired. Very timely video. Getting a smaller Bryant with two stage gas valve and variable speed blower fan, no air conditioning evaporator coil, but will be using the "fan " function to use with Aprilaire filter add-on to return duct...will a five wire cable between thermostat and furnace handle two stage thermostat / furnace combination with required fan control when not in heating mode?

Considering setting up my thermostat to think it's using a 2 stage furnace on a single stage furnace. Send the 1st stage to a relay separate from the main board and pull the low wire from park on the main board to the relay. Or I could build a small board that turns on/off and powers the low fan speed to keep the fan on but not use so much power anytime the furnace has no call for conditioning. I can't find a schematic on the motor to see if the low speed really uses much less power or not so I guess I just have to hook up a meter to find out. I don't think the first idea will be any good because by then the air at the ground will just be cold as hell and initially feel pretty uncomfortable until it mixes. But I really like the idea of always on fan even just to clean the air from the 3 animals. Thoughts?
What are the arrows for with the numbers? Where or how should they be set. I have one of these in an old farm house. Not sure how to set it.

A question if I may,
We have a Nortron electric furnace with a newer digital, pretty sure two stage thermostat. Furnace runs only on "mild" setting and if "cold" weather setting is on it trips the main breaker. Problem is the furnace runs non stop and still does not reach the desired temperature.
I just found furnace manual online where it says if two stage thermostat is used it has to be set on mild.
Any ideas? Is it just a wrong thermostat or is the furnace having some kind of malfunction? How can I find out where the fault is?

This is very interesting. I have a two stage pump system for the heat and 1 cooling. My new "smart" thermostat system wouldn't accept the E (presumably the emergency pump wire), only the W2 wire and only saw it as one pump system. Can a two stage be used as a one stage heating system like this?

would a two stage thermostat cause a single stage furnace to blow cool air? Having trouble with our furnace starting, turning the burners on, and then the burners shutting off but the pilot staying on and the furnace still blowing air continually(even once the air is cool) even though the thermostat says heat on.
Sounds like the unit is limiting out on high temp. Dirty filter?

I have the same thermostat in my new bought house and im trying to upgrade to nest. I'm having problems wiring it bc it has 8 wire. Is nest compatible with my 2 stage heat pump system?
Most Nest thermostats ar 2 stage.

I have done a ton of looking for information on 2 stage units. Not much information. Here’s my problem/question: I have a Mobile home 1250sq’,Lake Havasu, temps from 125 high to winter 35, insulation fair 2x4 walls. I’m thinking a 3.5 ton 2 stage HP will handle this. I don’t want the unit to short cycle and I think a single stage big enough to handle the highs will do exactly that. How can I program it? I have read dozens of thermostat manuals and I can’t find anything about how to program one. It would be nice to have it stay in low for 30 minutes then go to high if the set temp isn’t satisfied or come on high if set temp is 4 degrees higher then room temp. I can’t find that kind of information in any of the new thermostat manuals. Thanks in advance. Craig
You are over thinking this issue.
If you are correct in your sizing, a 2 stage unit will work well.
There is no extensive programming.
A 2 stage thermostat will operate in 1st stage until the structure temp drops(rises) to about 1 degree from the set point.
At that point, the second stage will come on.

That depends on the system. Many newer systems need an OEM thermostat to work with multistage systems.

It should. Nest thermostats require a common and most of these thermostats have one.

You can connect any 2 stage thermostat to an outdoor thermostat. You just connect them in series.

The W2 terminal of the thermostat is connected in series with the outdoor thermostat, then to the W2 terminal at the furnace.

That's a old heat pump thermostat
Im having trouble with an old Trane thermostat in my apartment, I cant afford anyone to come and look it.
The cover got knocked off of the wall by a falling mirror, now the temperature reader doesn't sync with the temperature that i set it to.
Tryng to find info all over the internet, but this is the closest thing ive come to finding.
Im concerned it may affect my usage and bill.
If someone reading this is generous enough to a lend a few minutes in helping me i would be very greatful!

I know this is too late to help you but it may help someone else so I'm replying.
A thermostat is just a connector like plugging in or unplugging a power cord. When it connects it just turns on your furnace or air conditioner. If your furnace is running it's costing $. If it's not running, it's not. So if you have to adjust the setting farther than before to get your apartment to the same level you're used to keeping it at temperature wise it doesn't make any difference as far as fuel consumption. It just means that the reader for the temperature that your thermostat is messed up. But the only thing that matters as far as fuel consumption and cost is how often it is running. Your thermostat is just an on and off switch that's connected to the temperature in the room at your thermostat. When the temperature in the room changes to lower than what you have the thermostat set at it will turn on the furnace. When the temperature in the room reaches what your thermostat setting is at its senses it and disconnect power to the furnace control board which shuts off your furnace.

Another question regarding the Bryant 80 % AFUE Evolution series with variable speed ECM motor and two stage gas valve. I will be using the furnace only for heating and air circulation (Fan On continuously) to operate Aprilaire filter year round. I have a single stage program-able thermostat now that I'd like to continue using in conjunction with a "Air Cycler FRV" controller so that I can program "fan on" for various times of the day. The "Air Cycler" site has a wiring diagram that illustrates how both the thermostat and Air Cycler controller are wired to the furnace air handler...Will both the thermostat and fan controller function as I hope on this "Evolution" series furnace with this variable speed fan. Your TH-cam channel is fantastic and I've learned a lot just listening to your explanations. Here's the AirCycler site with wiring diagram I spoke of:

OMG I hate multistage operation. Let me say...so what if your heat (or cool) load is just a bit larger than first stage operation? It seems that many times, it runs in first stage a really long time and then finally goes to 2nd stage. It's not as comfortable and it runs too long, and it's not worth having. Having 2 stages is not that much more efficient, and it takes longer, the blower runs longer, your comfort range is larger. I only have a 2 stage compressor because it was the only type that came with a lifetime warranty. It's more complex. In most situations, I prefer purely single stage operation, even if it is a 2 stage compressor. I want to know the best way to connect thermostat controls to a 2 stage compressor so it always runs in 2nd stage, with no delay, and never runs in lower stage at all, not even for 10 mins. Not ever.
I don't know of a way to bypass 2 stage operation without a delay.
