I took it as Multani, then recalled there is a huge similarity between Multani and Madhuwanti, just a difference of Komal Rishav and Dhaivat I think Multani uses komal (flat) Dh and Re in the descent instead of the shuddha (natural) Re/ Dh used in Madhuvanti. In addition to using different pitches of Re and Dh, Multani intones them subliminally, while Madhuvanti deploys them explicitly, and often even emphatically.
I would love to hear a 'duo' by Kala w/ her aunt N. Rajam, Or even a 'trio' by Kala Rajam and Sangeeta (Rajam's daughter). That would be divine indeed! //GOPAL//

Neel Kulkarni as you probably already know Kala was first groomed by her grandfather and by her aunt (yes indeed) N. Rajam. Later her foremost guru became Pandit Jasraj of the Mewati gharana.
There is no such thing as a western instrument or western music. Pythagorous (considered the father of western music) came to India to learn mathematics and music and introduced the basics of music theory and math in west. He learned the Vagabhatta theorum(by Vagabhatta who lived 500 years before him in India) known as the Pythagorous theorum in the west. He learned music from Orpheus(greek name for an Indian Brahmin). The Orphic way(vegetarianism) was alo introduced to the west from India. Western music is just a small branch of Indian music.
Though there is truth in what you are saying, this is an ugly way of saying it, as if to suggest western people made no contributions to music, which is not the case.
Yeah but the Europeans took Eastern music and developed a new style which eventually becomes baroque music and is definitely it's own new style of music. Then Bach combined German and Italian baroque and really kicked off what we can call Western music. Baroque/Bach use of chord progressions is very different from the Indian style of using a drone and staying in one key and using 1 raga or scale. Bach and Vivaldi really developed using chord progressions. Usually by the 2nd or 3rd measure Bach is already onto the V or IV chord and getting ready to jump to a parallel key. Very different approach. Then from the Romantic era up to modern serialism the chord progression/12 tone system was pushed to it's limits. Then jazz which has elements of baroque (Bach lines and chord progressions moving in 4ths) and post-romantic (using lots of upper structure notes or tensions like Debussy) and added more emphasis on improvisation over quickly moving chord progressions. If you took a classical Indian player and asked them to improvise over Giant Steps or even Stella it would be a disaster. It's an entirely new skillset that's required. I love all forms of Indian classical, northern and southern but calling Western music a subset of Indian is silly. Then you could say Indian music is a subset of Sumerian music which is a subset of African tribal music which is a subset of early nomadic Homo-Sapiens banging sticks on stuff to make beats and singing melodies. If our forebearer species H. Heidelbergensis had any music then we can keep going......
