  • This video covers the governor and fan shaft assembly. One thing I didn't mention in the video and found out later from the gentleman who was helping me is the components on the fan shaft assembly are an air pump for injecting filtered air into the engine. The square piece you see in the video below a spring pumps up and down from the eccentric collar on the fan shaft. Air is pulled in from the air filter housing. Interesting contraption.

Dumb question, but how are the governor gears lubricated?

On the back side of the casting is a hole that lines up with a hole in the main case. Oil is pumped up through that hole and that is fed onto one of the bearings or shaft, I forget. It is then splash fed to everything else.

Daniel, how did you put the large bevel gear back on the shaft and align it with the key? Did you heat the gear first?

I didn't have to heat anything. Using a press allows for slow and controlled assembly. Just line it up as best you can when you start to put it on. If it isn't lined up enough press it off and try again.

Does the outboard end of the fan shaft need to be shimmed up or down to keep it in proper alignment?

The system isn't designed with any shims where the support sits on the frame, so no. Interesting and great question though.
