One of my favorite woods. No matter what you make out of it or where you inlay it, it's just beautiful! The sound the lid makes coming off is music to the ears. Nice work there samurai. Bravo.
I try to expose. I am from Italy. Far away miles and miles by you. But, I am a Lawyer and I follow you because I envy and love your ability to work with your hands and build something. Great
Also one of my favorite decorative woods. A masterpiece for the generations Samurai. Well Done. I would love to also make one in Sapele with its gold accents. I so love these inspirational videos.
It turned out incredibly beautiful pencil case in the shape of an octagon! The oil gave the wood a pronounced, delicate purple color! Amazing work, great performance!
So, it’s beautiful purple now. In a few years it will age into a beautiful dark brown. Just the way purpleheart is when exposed to sunlight and oxygen. I love working with it. It’s extremely hard, though.
Nice project. I especially like the v-carved circular design you made as it elevated it to another level; thanks for sharing. I'd be interested in seeing how well it retains its colour after 6 months or so with that finish. Just a few more comments if I may: 1) now that you've made one of these , on any future projects would you finish the inside of the box prior to assembly? 2) what was your rationale for clamping the "tower" to the tablesaw table to secure the freshly glued up ends for drying when you could have simply clamped the ends together?
beautiful! I was waiting for you to put the bottle of some expensive alcohol in it. I hope you thought about that, and the height / "diameter" can accommodate it.
I made several gentleman valets for xmas a few years back out of purple heart. After a french polish, they looked amazing. The dust is pretty toxic to me, though.
I would fill the Octabox With my favorite pair of socks Or perhaps, if fortune knocks, A spoon I made for Goldilocks Or batteries for wooden clocks Or lightning rods to capture shocks Perhaps a batch of shiny rocks Or dinosaurs that hunt in flocks A finer bank than old Ft. Knox Beautiful the Octabox!!
It really is though! Tears up the edges of blades like crazy AND loads sandpaper like nobody's business. I think it's related to Ironwood, but I could ve misremembering that... Worth it in either case for the color and the grain~
Hey there. Beautiful piece. What ya using it for? Just curious. First thought was for long fire starting matches. Oh but I thought of this young couple, fella from Denmark, lady from Brazil, and they bought a rotten wooden schooner that they’ve had rebuilt from local Brazilian forestry products company with a great portion being Purple Heart. It’s a thing of beauty but I feel fairly certain that the wood will become painted on the exterior. Hopefully the interior can be polished naturally as you have done. Nice reminder of that beautiful wood species. Thx. Oh if you want a look they’re called Sailing Yaba. It reminds me of an old pirate ship kinda.
Beautiful work. I really enjoy your projects. I tried to make a box out of PH but it lost the purple color when I milled it. How did you keep the purple color?
Nice one Jesse. Wondering if you’ve tried walrus oil from lee valley? I use to use Odies, but switched to walrus. About 1/3 of the price and more of the sheen I was looking for. Check it out.
Back in my younger days I worked in a flooring mill. Whenever something other then a hard wood found its way to the line it was cheaper for the company to mill it and then throw it away. Employees could buy it for pennies on the dollar. At the same time I flipped a few houses and ended up with enough purple poplar to floor a master bathroom. I made almost 10 grand over the expected price. The buyers said sold as soon soon as they seen that floor without negotiating.
I see Alec Steele template a little in the graphics. Did you ever try to do incrustation of silver in wood as he do in his swords ? (would the silver be soft enough ?Is there any stronger that bois d'amarante ? A little schooling about wood wont work :D )
Magnificent result. The problem with this very beautiful wood is that it does not keep its color over time. It seems to me that to keep its purple color you have to pass it with lemon.
As i have understood, it is exposure to air, that fades away the purple. So applying a clear sealing coat is the best, to slow its turning. Would be interested if anyone has experience with any of that.
@@user-dt9fo9cy8b There are different methods of keeping purple wood its vibrant color. From dilute nitric acid treatment to special varnish applications to reduce the darkening of the wood, everything is good to keep it at its best. A treatment composed partly of green lime would even manage to maintain its original color indefinitely. this is the method I used in Guyana for amaranth
UV and oxygen exposure will turn it gray. To prevent this you can apply a high SPF sunscreen and let it dry prior to using your finish of choice. I have a piece turned in 2001 that was final coated in lacquer after the sunscreen that is still vibrantly purple to this day. Also, if you’re going to carve it make sure to keep your tools sharp as Purpleheart has loads of silica. It’s durability is why it was chosen as decking for clipper ships.
This was a 22.5 degree cut on 16 surfaces (8 pieces of wood with a cut on each side). Anytime your making cuts that need to come back around to the original point you only need to have all your angles add up to 360. A square box is 8 surfaces (4 pieces of wood with two cuts on each side. 8 x 45 = 360. Also 16 x 22.5 = 360. The actual dimension of the wood is not important and will only determine how big or small your finished product is. Usually sticking with a nice round number is best.
Your children are going to look back at these videos and be truly in awe of their father, kudos my friend
One of my favorite woods. No matter what you make out of it or where you inlay it, it's just beautiful! The sound the lid makes coming off is music to the ears. Nice work there samurai. Bravo.

I am from Italy. Far away miles and miles by you. But, I am a Lawyer and I follow you because I envy and love your ability to work with your hands and build something.
Great
Perfect bud box.
Really beautiful 🤩
Beautiful project. Very clever construction with the lids. A longer version would be great for fly rods. Thank you.
Definitely gonna make this in the future, would be amazing for a rare wine bottle or something like that. Just wow
Also one of my favorite decorative woods. A masterpiece for the generations Samurai. Well Done. I would love to also make one in Sapele with its gold accents. I so love these inspirational videos.
Wow, beautiful.
It turned out incredibly beautiful pencil case in the shape of an octagon! The oil gave the wood a pronounced, delicate purple color! Amazing work, great performance!
It's so beautiful that there is a wood with that coloring, it must be better in person.
Such a beautiful wood to work with
Wow 👏🏻👏🏻that is beautiful… the carving took it to another level ❤️🙋🏻♀️🇬🇧💕jane
Recently re-subscribed and his woodworking skills is the main reason. Gorgeous piece !
Great demo of a simple yet elegant
Vintage Samurai. Love it.
Oh hell yeah! I have to try and get this wood again for my woodturning-attempts...
Very nice piece Samurai! A worthy gift for the Samurais wife...
In terms of unusual coloured wood, osage orange (yellow), ligna vitae (green) and purpleheart are so beautiful!
Very nice! Purpleheart is a great wood to work with because of the natural color.
Very cool. Thanks for showing us.
Awesome video !! 🙏💚👍🇬🇧......Simon
That is just gorgeous!
Truly incredible the way you simplified that whole process! I’m so effin happy you’re back!!💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Beautiful
Dude. That is soooo cool!!!
Very nice job. You are very creative!!
Smoooooooth. Would love to see some brass/bronze/copper wire inlay in that design to make it really pop
now I want to make one for storing fireplace matches near my hearth. Great inspiration and an amazing project as usual.
Great Work!!,For a moment I thought you would carve some Japanese Runes and inlay them in ivory!Cheers from Toronto!!!!
That is absolutely beautiful!
So, it’s beautiful purple now. In a few years it will age into a beautiful dark brown. Just the way purpleheart is when exposed to sunlight and oxygen. I love working with it. It’s extremely hard, though.
I tried to work with PH but when I milled it down it turned brown. How do you get it to stay purple?
Very nice.....gorgeous wood!

Awesome piece! I was hoping to see you do some samurai inlay with a gold metal or dark hardwood. Then you carved it and it came out great.
beautiful!
I was waiting for you to put the bottle of some expensive alcohol in it. I hope you thought about that, and the height / "diameter" can accommodate it.
Damn I didnt know there is purple wood, my fave colour too. Damn wish I hadnt seen this, now I want one!
Full blown odies addiction. Just bare handing it on there hahaha. Love it brother. Your videos never disappoint. And that carving looks awesome
Bravo! Respect the craft!

Very nice. Just learnd some new techniques!
Purple heart is my favorite wood, hands down.
Gorgeous!
That's a very fancy Thermos you got there, Jesse!
I made several gentleman valets for xmas a few years back out of purple heart. After a french polish, they looked amazing. The dust is pretty toxic to me, though.
love these project videos !!!
Absolutely class
I would fill the Octabox

Beautiful the Octabox!!
Doctor, please... I'm still finishing my Green Eggs and Ham...
When you were cutting the end caps on the table saw I was half expecting you would take one straight to the family jewels lol
Nice! What angle did you set your saw blade?
Does the Odie's oil keep the purple color over time?
what ya gonna put into it? Looks fantastic. :)
Matchbox for the woodstove at the cabin?
looks perfect to hold a nice bottle of red wine...
I love purpleheart! Super dense, easy to work, even if it is hell on blades, and smells nice.
It really is though! Tears up the edges of blades like crazy AND loads sandpaper like nobody's business. I think it's related to Ironwood, but I could ve misremembering that... Worth it in either case for the color and the grain~
I guess if you want to finish the inside it would be best to odies it before making the 22.5 degree miters?
Your Sir, make nice stuff.
Really beautiful! in what degree you cut the 8 straps?
You are Doc Octabox!
Beautiful, dude! Fantastic work! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Is that for your Pringles?
Very cool! What’s it for?
Very nice. Yes rare wine or whiskey or special memories musical instrument etc
If you bake purple heart at 325- 350 F for 45-60 minutes, the purple will deepen and will keep it's color better.
Ohhh, really??
This warrants some experimentation
Beautiful work. I really enjoy your projects. I tried to make a box out of PH but it lost the purple color when I milled it. How did you keep the purple color?
It comes back if you let it sit out and oxidize.
Octobox ... Pretty sure that's the name of the next COVID variant
In any case, Great build!
Will you inlay it at some point down the road?

Cool box! What make is your table saw? I'm looking for an upgrade to my dinosaur saw!
Very nice!
How many time did you spend to make it? It Always seems so easy and quick when I watch your movies 🙄
Looks great! Gotta tell us what it's for though!
Really love the wood. It has amazing depth. Is it expensive?
You should make a longer one for a fly rod to take to your cabin 🎣
What are you going to put in the octobox. I must know.

I like it.
Does Odie's raise the grain?
Love it
Make me one, I have no idea what I'd use it for but I need one!
Absolutely beautiful man. Love that carving on the one panel. Great idea. Winebox?
Is there a formula to figure out the blade angle to make things like this?

what degree blade tilt to achieve the octobox.....?
