    Sorry if this has already been said but from what I've learned, you need to freeze twice. Not to kill the bugs as they might not be there...yet! It's to kill the eggs that are present in rice, flour and grains etc. Its why even if you've sealed everything really tightly the bugs dont get in, they just hatch around the sell by date. I saw one American prepper say that he didn't even care about the bugs in rice, just soak it and skim the now dead bugs off the top of the water 😮. I'm a bit old school and would definitely do that rather than waste anything 😊. I havent bought rice since it went over £1 a kilo (Basmati) but the brand I used to buy came in 10k milar bags so I'm hoping all is well! I freeze my flour twice too and then vacuum seal each bag. No problems with bugs even years later.
    Love your videos. Thank you.

      Thank you for sharing 😊😊but why freeze 2 times? If the eggs are there in rice would they not freeze first time round ? Interesting 🤔 I think in desperate situations I would skim and eat but by opening the bag in the kitchen , I will potentially let them out into my house to infest something else , better be safe in my opinion . Thank you 😁

      @@AnasFoodLifestyle This is the comment I was going to leave. I've heard others say to freeze twice; first is to kill the live bugs, when you take it out to thaw, it would stimulate the eggs to hatch, then freezing a second time would kill the eggs that have hatched.

    Good observation! Glad you shared this. I am going to go through my stored rice and grains and look closely. Sorry for the loss of food, but glad you gave us a heads up!

    An old guy from Europe told me when he buys rice he puts on trays in oven to dry completely. I store a lot of my dry goods in freezers, we are humid here and it seems the best way for us. The eggs are often on the outside of store packaging, so disgarding that may also help. I put rice in paper bags first, then in mylar to hopefully stop the sharp ends from putting a hole in. Best of luck ❤

      Thank you 😊 I’ve been doing this with my beans to kill eggs , put in the oven for 30min then Mylar them, not sure about rice after the oven , worth a try though . Thank you

      @@Pocketfullofpebbles. can't recall but lowest I expect, just enough to dry it, he also put outside in sun. He washed the rice first. Maybe leave oven door cracked open.

    Hi Ana, perhaps once the bags are ready, you can store them in lidded buckets or storage bins x

  • @mickey1299

    Got to say Ana , recently i've heard as many people don't freeze , as those who do . Average times appeared to be around 3 -5 days , with the majority agreeing -24 is the way to go . I have heard some who prefer longer , and there is one such in the comments below . Thickness or gauge appears to be another important issue , with almost all stating between 3-5 mil , however the general consensus does appear to be the thicker the better , and universal agreement oxygen absorbers are a must . Some prefer to discard the original packaging , and here there is a good reason . This is often the start place for infestation , with cardboard being a chief favourite . Now i do have a little knowledge in regard to this , from a previous interest , that of sailing . As i'm sure i have mentioned in the past , i have an interest in sailing , and it was here , that it's recommended to discard packaging for exactly this reason . In fact a sailing channel i watch has been forced to deal with just such an event , earlier this year . I heard this years ago and normally it was centred in the tropics , but let's not forget , if the planet is warming ? .
    The Final defence was storing the sealed bags in a heavy gauge , lidded , plastic bucket , usually around the 5 gallon size . When i started this journey , it seemed that freezing was the way to go , but now i'm not so sure . There appears to be so many different methods to stock and store long term . At times it's like trying to thread your way though a minefield , on tip toes .
    Now i would like to ask a little incidental question here , which though may seem a little odd , does have very good reasons behind it . What is the weight of that oxygen depleted bag of rice , and how does that compare to the same bag of rice straight from the shop .

    When you freeze your rice is it stacked in layers cause depending on how much is stacked up in your freezer to freeze it might not reach that required -20 temperature in the core of the stack. to kill off the eggs or insects. Also double check with an separate thermometer that your freezer thermostat is accurate. Love your vlogs by the way. I’ve learned much from you 😊!

    I once saw advice to put a good sized ginger root in the middle of the rice/bag. I did this (on a 25 lb bag) one year ago and in perfect shape, no rot, bugs or anything, perfect. Probably need to put a new root in as getting dried out.

    • @AnasFoodLifestyle
      @AnasFoodLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a good idea , and it will perfume the rice not sure if you say you put the fresh ginger as it will rot ?

    I like vacuum sealed bags because you can see if there is an infestation. In a mylar bag you don't know if there was a tiny pin hole until you open it maybe years later... I freeze my rice at -25 for 2 months spread out on parchment lined baking pans. Afterward, I spread the rice out on freshly cleaned baking trays for a week to 10 days, in a normal heated room, checking them every day for signs of moisture. Then sealed in bags of 2 and 4 cups of rice. Then stored in bins with rice from the same lot. Every month or two check to ensure each bag is still sealed. I've never had any infestation. I do the same with flour then package it recipe sizes in brown lunch bags before vacuum sealing. With mushrooms and berries the same, but usually for half the freezer time. They are immediately transferred to vacuum bags and sealed before thawed. Also anything which comes in plastic is transferred to a 'mason' jar and vacuum sealed ie. beans, lentils, etc. I don't freeze or air dry them.

    • @AnasFoodLifestyle
      @AnasFoodLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for sharing 😊 you will know if there is a pinhole in Mylar bag as it will inflate as oxygen enters ( providing you use oxygen absorbers ) . You said berries go straight in bags to be sealed whilst frozen ? Are you talking about freezer dryer ? As you won’t seal berries whilst still frozen because of moisture ?

    Is that mylar bag vacuum sealed? Im sorry if this is a silly question, im new to this whole prepping thing, just learning. Im now watching through all Ana's playlist. It takes some time. It might have been mentioned in a video that i haven't watched yet. Thank you

      Don’t worry you have to start somewhere. You only vacuum seal clear bags that are designed for that. Mylar bags are silver bags that you use oxygen absorber with. I will be doing a Live packaging session some time this weekend so people can pop by and ask questions. Keep an eye on community tab fur the day xx
