The turret model in the show is based off the one from Fallouts 4 and 76, they are NOTORIOUSLY bad at hitting anything moving faster than a regular walk, so the whole "please remain calm" sign is a ploy to keep people slow enough that the turret can actually hit them.

As far as your question about whether it's the character of Maximus or the actor that's making you feel iffy, it's the character. These characters were written with game stats in mind (literally; I'm not just guessing there, it's been stated. AND Bethesda even released stat sheets for the characters in the show to give better insight into who they are). We got hints at which stats Lucy's points are placed into in her introduction (and fans of the games will have recognized those when they were mentioned). With Maximus, if you've played the games, it's fairly clear that his points are focused on Strength and Endurance, with a focus on melee fighting (which is why he can take so many beatings and get back up to keep fighting), but his lowest stats are Intelligence and Charisma. If the show were the game, he'd be constantly failing speech checks (saying the wrong things, not communicating his intentions (or innocence) properly, etc) and making the wrong/dumb choices, which are both things we've already seen happen several times in these first two episodes. Also, he comes off as a bit of a dud. This is intentional. Obviously, I'm not going to spoil anything, so I'll just say that once you've seen the whole season, you'll realize that the actor who's playing Maximus is absolutely killing it in the role. You're feeling about Maximus exactly the way you're meant to be feeling about Maximus at this point in the show.
I'll add that, when I first watched the series, I felt the same way early on. For the first few episodes, I kept thinking, "Wow, this show is great, but I wish they would've cast someone else as Maximus bc this guy is the weak link." Over the course of the season, he grew on me and, by the end, I understood exactly what I said to you in the first paragraph of this comment. Everyone in this show delivered exactly what their characters are supposed to be and the pacing of how everything unveils itself is immaculate.
Will Max ever be your favorite character in the show? Probably not. Lucy's awesome and the Ghoul is a top-tier character, so they're going to be most people's favorites. But Max is a good representation of a companion character from the games and the actor is actually really, really good at playing exactly what Maximus is. Go back and watch the scene from ep 1 where the Brotherhood is interrogating him over Aspirant Dane's foot injury (the razor in the boot) and watch the complex series of emotions that plays over his face during the interrogation, but especially right after the guy names him Knight Titus's new squire and they leave him alone in the room. The face journey he takes is a masterclass in acting. It's not the actor who's a bit of a dullard. It's the character.
OH! And one last thing: Of the stuff you've seen so far with Maximus, there is a place to begin to hook in with him beyond what you mentioned: Disillusionment.
    - Him being bullied by his fellow aspirants isn't just about him being victimized, it actively goes against what the Brotherhood is supposedly about. When he's being interrogated over Aspirant Dane's injury, the Cleric tells him, "Violence is a tool. We use it to bring order to the Wasteland, but violence against a Brother of Steel is a sign of weakness." Yet, Max is actively getting bullied every day and no one is doing a thing about it.
    - When he gets a question wrong in the classroom, the instructor hits him in the face with a ruler and tells him he'd be more useful as a corpse.
    - When the Brotherhood think Max may have hurt aspirant Dane because the people who bully him claim he did it, he's put into an interrogation that feels very threatening with a Knight standing behind him, ready to crush his head in a hot second if they don't like his answers. No trial, no due process of any kind, just his life subject to being ended at any moment at their whim.
    - Several times, we've seen flashbacks of little kid Max amidst rubble, smiling up at a heroic looking Knight stepping out of the smoke. Max's hero! And yet...
    - When Max squires for an actual Knight for the first time, the Knight is a complete dick ("I'm bored and I want to shoot something"), a coward who would send his unarmored squire into the cave to investigate rather than go in himself, and, once again, a dick (blaming Max for his own stupidity and indicating that he's going to tell the Brotherhood it's Max's fault, leading to them executing him for his supposed failure). It's a "never meet your heroes" moment.
Max is similar to Lucy in this way. Lucy believes in the mission of the Vault and her belief is crashing against the reality of life above ground. Max believes in the mission of the Brotherhood, but his belief is crashing against the reality of what the Brotherhood actually is vs. what he thought it was.

Very well-stated. I'm actually surprised that so many people miss that Max' character is the surface equivalent of Lucy's - two opposites that bracket the theme expressed with great foreboding by Wilzig in the beginning of the episode.

I never knew that they put out official stats, but I’ve always said that Maximus is very obviously a strength build, with low intelligence and charisma (him having to sell a tooth because he’s one bottlecap short is such a perfect example of him having zero charisma).
We get a sense of Lucy’s skills, and she’s generally pretty balanced.
Meanwhile, The Goul has put so many hours into the game that he’s OP, and likely has all his stats maxed out.
The show is so good at incorporating game mechanics, and I tend to view each character as a different type of player:
Lucy is a first-time player, who spreads their stats out a little too thin and tries to always make the “right” choice, but gradually discovers that they’re lacking in certain areas, and what they think is “right” isn’t always so obvious (I read her “okey-dokie’s” as her making decisions, and the change in tone over the course of the show reflects her “learning the game”).
The Goul has been playing the game for so long (he does it “for the love of the game”) that he’s lost any real moral compass, and abuses the game mechanics (he shoots up Filly and murders half a dozen people, but makes sure to pay for the tomatoes).
And Maximus just wants to be as strong as possible (he wants to “hurt the people who hurt him”), but unfortunately the first faction he encountered was the Brotherhood, and he’s so unbalanced that he never really advances beyond having high strength/health/endurance because he’s constantly getting the s**t kicked out of him. Without giving any spoilers, the Brotherhood is probably the worst faction for him to put all his trust into the more we learn about his past.

I've only played Fallout 4 so far, but in that game, a character's stats are referred to as their S.P.E.C.I.A.L., Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. Maximus seems to have low intelligence and very high luck. High luck allows a character to purchase a skill named "Idiot Savant" which can get them out of sticky situations, and actually works more often the lower the character's Intelligence. I agree with your overall assessment of Lucy and The Ghoul's stats. I've enjoyed your reactions and I think you'll both enjoy the rest of the series.

Most of the Fallout games have a karma system entwined within the RPG nature of the game. The player's ultimate karma is built upon the choices they make throughout the game. I felt like in the show they gave us a starting point for all three karmic positions as some perspective. Lucy is undoubtedly good, The Ghoul is certainly bad, and Maximus seems to skirt the line in the neutral karma range. Hey guys, really enjoying your Fallout reactions! This is my first time on your channel and I love your vibe (I used to collect comics too, I only have my most precious ones left!). I wanted to leave a request for a TV series that you could watch on your other channel. If you haven't already seen it, FIREFLY is an amazing 2002 live action series that has a crazy backstory. Bottom line, the network cancelled the show after eleven episodes (another three were completed and can be watched), but in reality the show was so good that numerous protest letters were sent and articles were written to the point that a movie company agreed to a full length motion picture to "close some of the doors" left open when the series ended (they actually put out a DVD chronicling the way it went down).
Anyway, FIREFLY is a Joss Whedon series (creator of Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse and the first two Avengers movies) and is a SciFi/Western set in space hundreds of years in the future. It's hard to categorize but it's a combination of Action and Humor with some Drama (even Horror in one episode!). Joss Whedon described the show as "the people that the Millenium Falcon flew past on their way to the Death Star". To explain the appeal another way, I've literally never seen a reactor not cry after completing the series and it's follow up film SERENITY. Guaranteed that you will be hooked after the first episode (also called, interestingly, SERENITY), I'd love you to check it out if it sounds interesting to you. Do you want to change your mind? There's no arguing you were wrong there. It shouldn't be difficult to admit that.
Your "opinion abput" her character never seemed to change across every comment I saw you make on her videos. You denied objective criticism, you denied reality because you had made up your mind that the only flaw in the writing is the audience.

There is a small animated series y'all should watch that came with the show after the series, it goes a bit more indepth into the background world as is very well done.
It explains a few things, including that bottle you saw at 4:00, which was literally their "low cost" options, which was literally just "well if you can't afford a vault, you can afford a quick painless death for you and your family!"
Plan D, brought up again at 27:00! Yep, same thing that family took lol

The turret is an old faithful much like an AK-47 and you need to remember that ammo, parts and raw materials are hard to come by so automatically defends are in disrepair,

I can say that this episode really branch out the Fallout game into live action being a very spot on with the location and story progression. Like Philly looks amazing in this show that it feels like a theme park to walk around and explore 😄 till later we get to see a nod to the game with Ghoul doing “V.A.T.S” to the merchants. Aka the type of mode in the game that slow-down kill camera shots to be stylish looking for your eyes to witness. 😲
So with that said, I can say that each episode have a unique credit scene that changes over each episode and have iconic music from the game history or it shares information on what the episode carries in a song within storytelling.

  • @Zombu47

There is a theory about why Maximus is the way he is in the show and therefore his lack of charisma or empathy for his character is on purpose. I won't put it here in case you don't want that information but I'm (and I'm sure plenty of others) happy to share it if you do. I think you might appreciate him more as the series goes on without that influence however. Also I'm unsure if that theory has been confirmed or not.

I think here lies a lot of the problems people had with this series, this isn't a major spoiler, but the show is taking place at the end of the established timeline, after Fallout 1/ Fallout 2 and Fallout NV and things have definitely changed. In Fallout 1, the Brotherhood were the top-dogs being remnants of the military and having access to all the good tech, but didn't want to rule over the Wastes, just remove its worst factors and control the outcome of technology falling into the wrong hands, in Fallout 2 the NCR started to expand with President Tandi at the reins and the Brotherhood and burgeoning NCR shared pretty warm relations, until their territories start butting up against each other. Just before Fallout NV they're off the back of a bitter war in which the Brotherhood has lost pretty decisively and are on their way out with the NCR at the peak of their power while the NCR controls California and a good amount of Utah and Nevada, the BoS is on the run and in hiding, trying to keep their mission pure, refusing to adapt and is more concerned with survival than their original charter of keeping the Wastes safe from themselves by going out and preserving technology, this preservationist attitude is what causes the Dead Money DLC with the Sierra Madre and Elijah looking to control the deadly gas to rule the wastelands. Meanwhile during Fallout 4, a giant chunk of the Brotherhood builds an airship and goes East to Boston, but under Arthur Maxson, descendant of the founder here unlike most Chapters of the Brotherhood, they see the Commonwealth as a territory to be ruled over and controlled, signalling the slow veer off-course from what the Brotherhood was originally mandated to do, it's a somewhat fascist regime and while they stilla re looking out for humanity, any mutant, ghoul or synth will surely suffer under their oversight.
You're seeing what the BoS have become now at the end of the road, after their ugly multi generational fall into decay. After seeing them first as honorable quasi-religious knights, then altruistic saviors of the East under Elder Lyons and then a broken ramshackle cluster of disparate enclaves just looking out for themselves this is what it's come to. I think it signifies something cool about Fallout that Bethesda never really recognized before, the need for the factions to change over time.

    • @alicea3421
      @alicea3421 หลายเดือนก่อน

You didn't end up saying what the problem was. That it changed too much? That it didn't?
It's odd you say "the need for factions to change over time... never really recognized before" after you explained how they've changed across every game.
The Fallout version of change is the same as TFA's, a reset of the status quo. There is no logical progression or continuation for the factions or the world. NCR got starkillered in the writer's room. They hardly exist anymore, despite the explanation for that making no sense in universe. (The means being even more embarrassing and even less believable.) Change could have been great, unanticipated logically inconsistent change to serve the purpose of no change, is just really boring.
Most of which wouldn't matter to most people, if the show itself were written with any degree of competency.
Continuity is of course important both in isolation and sequential media. Alien 3 could have been a good movie, even for people that hadn't seen Aliens.
In the case of Fallout there are so many problems to address that it feels like it only really embellishes its more immediate flaws. If the writers are incapable of adhering to consistent character logic, it's only expected for that to translate elsewhere. Knowing nothing of Fallout lore, it should not be surprising that they're loose and liberal with it. Adherence to source material doesn't even need to be important, LotR doesn't need the scouring of the Shire to be a masterpiece. Claiming continuity opens the work up to criticism in that regard.
One of the only things I liked about Fallout was the implied merge or recruitment of Legion individuals by the Brotherhood or a Brotherhood chapter. Maybe merely only adoption of Legion methods, though evidence implies more. However I was told by Fallout lore fans that it could not have happened. I'll always avoid writing for the writers. "Art isn't subjective" etc. But there seems to be enough evidence in the show for it to be intentional and one of the few instances of anything that they didn't immediately contradict. Maybe it doesn't quite work in continuity with the timeline of NV, but it's functional enough.

this show is so good at developing the characters, all 3 of the main ones, Lucy, Maximus and The Ghoul
they are more complicated than they first appear to be
the scene when Lucy is giving that speech to the Ghoul, and ends with a line something like "use of force is justified" is (to me) 100% a reference to the show Justified that Walton Goggins (the Ghoul) was in with Timothy Olyphant

It's a terrible show, but explicit scenes can be fine. Ill implemented slop shock scenes ala The Boys are just incompetence on display. They believe they're setting an absurd comically extreme tone, but in the case of episode 1 of Fallout, it's tone-deaf and never addressed. Even worsening the more information is revealed.
