  • The people of South Memphis stand to lose the land that their families have lived on for centuries to a new pipeline. The Byhalia Connection is set to be built above the Memphis aquifer and to snake through historically Black neighborhoods. VICE News Tonight goes to South Memphis to meet the people fighting for their future.

@Duante Wrong Toledo Wtf are you talking about? This is the hardest working least paid generation in modern American history. 78% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and it’s not uncommon for people to work 2-3 jobs just to survive. Way to be out of touch though and form your opinions based on stereotypes and anecdotes.

He’s saying young people are busting their asses just as much for even less money (in terms of purchases power) than most boomers had to work. You used to be able to afford a house and car off one persons salary, now you need 3 jobs or get lucky and marry into money. So when you imply they don’t make mommas like that anymore you’re 100% wrong and you need to start looking around and noticing the young laborers that are holding this county up by their shoulders. Not all kids are spoiled and get to go to college.

My hometown is having the same issue from an Australian housing company. They're trying to build upscale apartments on the river and hiking trail land that was purposefully marked as farmland for over 50 years to stop it from being developed on when the farming lands started becoming a town and eventually a city. The company is trying to say that it won't develop apartments or anything on the land and that they're just trying to sue the city for the land so they can "take care of it better and only build a few apartments" 🙄 we already had an issue with the air force letting old jet fuel massively leak into the drinking water and had to deal with the surrounding suburbs buying up land to run their sewage through the area, so ya, no one believes that the housing company will just randomly out of the kindness of their hearts just leave the land as is

    How can we help?
Mr. Clyde Robinson sounds like a wonderful person and he reminds me of an old friend.
This happens all over rural America. An agency of the state tried to condemn and run my grandpa out of his home in rural Florida in the 90’s. He refused to sell and ended up winning in the end, he died on his property a happy old man.

Nothing to do with race. Stop it. Enough of these cheap, divisive dog whistles. You’re manufacturing your own narrative and getting outraged by your very own creation. This has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with money and their ability to fight back. They would be treated precisely the same had they been purple with green spots or translucent. This isn’t about colour. This constant race bating is starting to look like mental illness. Just be a good person and you’ll be treated accordingly.

We all should be standing against mediocrity and injustices being perpetrated against our fellow citizens and neighbors, be it happening any where on this planet. I wish, I was manufacturing this. But I'm not. The system that is supposed have protect it's citizen from harm has failed them consecutively for many generations, and this shakes me to my core of what makes me human. So many people in South Memphis are already struggling, protect them!! This is exhausting we’re dealing with this AND gentrification is horrible right now! Make sure they xray all the welds and force the welders to cut out any voids, inclusions, lack of fusion, etc. Have someone there when they hydrotest to make sure they do it right. Make sure local PHMSA checks it out.
I'd say if they do it right and keep up with maintenance it should minimize risk, but they could be one of the companies who would rather take the fine than do the maintenance.

These companies also own pipelines that have leaked millions of gallons of oil. They don't do anything once it leaks. There is zero accountability. So why should they trust anything they say?
